Ok, I wrote about starting to wear lipstick a while ago, despite my reluctance. I just need something moisturizing, and lip balms are not doing it. I have tried a bunch of recommendations and they just don't work.

What I definitely DON'T want is a lipstick that makes my lips look all crackly and gross. I hate that. And definitely no bright reds or other unnatural colors.

Any recommendations for brands and specific shades? I'm horribly inept at choosing makeup on my own. If I don't have a hit list of brands and shades to try before I go in, I just get overwhelmed and leave. What kinds of colors would work with my natural coloring? Which in case you don't remember can be seen here:

MAC lipsticks are really nice.

Maya, L'Oreal right now has a line of lipsticks named for models and actresses called their Colour Riche "Stars" line and I have found the one I have to be very creamy and light. They are recognizable because the cases are glossy black (all their other lipsticks are kind of a goldish-taupe color) and there are just a few colors. Funny you should mention Aishwarya, April. I was just looking up what lipstick Freida Pinto uses. It's nice to finally have a similarly colored celebrity to follow...

(Most Bollywood actresses tend to go overkill with the makeup, IMO)

I know that this is quite a cliche, but have you tried Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey? I am yet to meet a person who doesn't love it and it doesn't look flattering on.

I thought about it Tanya but I wasn't sure if it was moisturizing. It sounds like the hint of color would be perfect.

I find it quite moisturizing, it feels like a cross between a lip balm and lipstick to me. Have you ever actually tried it? If not, just go to a counter and give it a whirl.

Maya, if you find yourself at the Clinique counter, may I suggest trying their Long Last Lipstick while you're testing out the Black Honey? (Tanya's right--Black Honey is a universal favorite.) I've found that the Long Last Lipstick doesn't dry out my lips the way most other long lasting formulas do, and I've been using 02 Sugar Bean for years and years. And I'm really a lazy lipstick wearer--I only use this one and only for important meetings and special occasions.

I know you said lip balms weren't doing it for you, but I feel compelled to ask: have you tried the Korres tinted Lip Butters yet? Theirs is the only tinted variety I've ever liked, and though a bit pricey for balm, I bought a vial in Wild Rose last summer that is still going strong with almost daily usage.

I'm a MAC girl all the way. I have several different kinds of lipstick, but the matte is my favorite. Not sure on color. I have a hard enough time with myself and rely on trying on various shades and the help of the girls/guys at the counter. Verve and Twig are two colors I wear often and have been for years. I recently bought Cyndi and love the chameleon qualities of it (different colors of lip pencil really change the color of that one.) However, it's a bright pinkish/red, which you said you don't want.

I'll second Clinique Almost Lipsticks, they're moisturizing and very light. I like Bobbi Brown Lip Shines best, though- they're a bit heavier so have better staying powder, and are very moisturizing. Great colours, essential oils and even SPF, and they're not crazy shiny or anything, just a natural glossy look. Pricey, though

Oh.. sorry can't help, I'm a gloss girl, only wear lipgloss, love Lacôme glosses. I think you could start trying a nude shade, love nude lipstick and lots of black mascara in the lashes!

I don't know how moisturizing it is, but I am loving Nars lip gloss right now -- the one in the tube with a sponge applicator. My color is the bizarrely-named Chihuahua.

I don't like gloss for myself. It's sticky and on my dry lips it looks awful. Highlights every crack and bit of dead skin. My plan is to exfoliate and maintain the results using a sheer, drenching lipstick.

Hi Maya,

I'm picky about lipstick too. I've been wearing Mary Kay Signature lipstick in "Sweet Nectar" and have been pleased with it; it doesn't run outside my natural lip line and fades naturally without cracking, etc. My coloring is very different from yours so I don't know if that fair of a shade would work but the formula might. Also, I started wearing lip balm under my first application of lipstick to control the intensity of the color. My dry lips seem to really absorb the color so the balm helps a lot.

I know what you mean about lip gloss, it feels so sticky and definitely wears me instead of me wearing it! It feels even worse the first time you eats something during the day and get crumbs stuck in it.

Maya, the first time I bought "Aishwarya's Beige," color number 809, it was called "Linda Evangelista's Beige" -- also color number 809. When I used it, liked it, and went to CVS to duplicate it, it had mysteriously become Aishwarya's. Seriously, it was Linda E's for about five minutes. Would love to know the story behind that one...

I vote MAC and Chanel all the way. I don't do gloss so I can't help out there, but I've tried so much lipstick it's insane.

I have to assume MAC will be cheaper because I can't afford $30 for a tube of lipstick! Do you have any thoughts on colors Angie? I am so clueless. I have no idea what to look for. Peaches, plums, pinks, berries, browns, bronzes. I just get lost in a sea of P's and B's.

Try Cover Girl Lipslicks, especially in Hipster. It has been around forever and runs about 4 bucks. It's sheer, like a tinted lip balm and very moisturizing. It is one of the few that I've finished and repurchased.

I second the Bobbi Brown lipsticks that Ele recommended. I have VERY dry lips that crack and peel constantly, if I'm not wearing lipstick or gloss or balm with moisturizers or oils and SPF in them.
I love her Creamy Lipcolor for the shea butter that's in it, or as Ele suggested, the new Treatment Lip Shine, because it has SPF, which is always needed. And the colors aren't out there weird, either. It's not the cheapest option out there. Her lipstick runs about 22 bucks, but for me, it's worth it totally.
Another brand I like is at Target. It's called NP Set lipstick. It's very moisturizing as well, but as such, it breaks off in the tube easily. I solved that problem by transferring the lipstick to an empty container, which gives me the option of mixing my colors.

I'll give another rec for Clinique's Black Honey. It's nearly foolproof. MAC's Lustre lipsticks also have a soft gloss and sheer color: Sophisto is a raspberry that somehow frequently looks good on both warm and cool tones.

vote MAC..but i also buy Clinique..im not a big lipstick fan..hence when i want to get colors that i know im not going to use much..i go for clinique..i have a nude shade in clinique and i love it

I have always considered myself allergic to lipsticks because they caused my lips to immediately feel dry, just an aweful feeling. I do think they are changing the ingredients though because I've actually found one lately that I can wear with no lip balm. It's amazing, I used to freak out if I didn't have lip balm in my pocket at all times. The lipstick I have now is an Armani Silk Cream lipstick.

im in agreement with the black honey suggestion. Its very subtle and moisturizing but looks nice on all different skin tones.

Always been a MAC lover though I recently found a Chanel color I love, Ballet Russe. And with Nordie's rewards I just splurged on a Burberry which should arrive today. They had two colors I wanted to try, one "brick red", and the other a neutral that got rave reviews, the "nude cashmere". It's pricey but I don't buy lipstick often.
