Letting go of the khakis - YouLookFab Forum

I'm cleaning out my closet today. I tried on my old friend, some khaki pants, which I've had for three or four years. I haven't worn them since last summer.

Not so fab, especially in photos! The basic cut isn't bad, but the cotton makes them look a little dumpy. They almost look mannish from the back, eeek! I think it's time to let them go, don't you agree? I know you agree. This darn new eye of mine is creating a large thrift store pile!

I wouldn't mind some new khakis, or maybe dress pants with stretch in a khaki or light tan color would be better. I need to keep an eye on the back view a litlte more carefully too, my rectangle shape can look kind of squarepants if I don't create some curves! I wonder how higher waisted retro pants would look?

Kristine, you crack me up! I'm really enjoying your posts. I'm not an expert when it comes to pants, but they do look a little big to me. Let's see what the others have to say.

Let the khakis go and don't look back! They are a style that few women can wear. When was the last time you saw someone looking fab in traditional khaki pants?

It begs the question, though...are khakis doomed to be uncool? I like them, but I think it might be all in the styling?!

Bethw - I'm very interested to hear what Angie has to say on this. Because I've been noticing khaki coming out for spring. I was thinking lately it might be making a come-back.... Not that I'm going to bite... I refuse to fall into that style rut again....

(okay I do have one single pair left; they are more of a dress pant style... )

So true queenie, I can't imagine anyone saying "yeah those khakis look HOT on her", especially that pair! They're gone!

I don't know about khakis on the whole, but the fact that they're cotton makes them tough to work with. That pair even had some stretch, but they still look rumply and dumpy. I'm going to stick to a khaki pencil skirt (with a little sheen and stretch) for spring I think.

For those of you who have khakis, I'd encourage you to take a photo from the back. Maybe you don't have grandpa butt (good one Beth!), but you might be horrified to find out you do!

I think you're right, Kristine - I think it's time to give these up.

I've given up wearing traditional khakis like these, but I still sometimes wear cargo style pants in khaki or olive green.

Then again, I'm still wearing corduroys, too. But only for casual wear, Angie!

Sorry about the goofy angled shot. I don't have a back shot, but they flatter. They are the BR Martin fit, only in khaki.

I have a hunch these wouldn't fit me if I tried to wear them right now, but maybe in another pound or two.

When I have to go into the office in the summer, these are the slacks I'm most likely to reach for. Not going to be buying any more... one pair is enough.

I've never owned a pair of khakis before, and don't feel a compelling need. But I agree with Angie -- it's about the cut and fabrication, not so much the color.

Shiny -- love how you've styled them! Gives me an old-school movie star vibe.

I'm not against khakis per se (yes, it's me corduroy girl!) but I think you can find ones that fit & flatter more than these. I think khakis are very preppy, American classic and will never go out of style though the cuts may change over the years. I have not personally worn mine for awhile now - mostly because my old pair presented a fit challenge last year (i.e. my butt seems have disappeared after baby #2). I ended up wearing white jeans with everything I ordinarily wore khakis with in the past.

Yep, Kristine - I hope you've let go of those. You could always replace them with an updated pair (like shiny's) if you need khaki's.

I think I spent 10 years wearing unflattering khaki's (pants for winter/ shorts for summer) with a black top. Sort of my own sad MOTG uniform for the 90's. I, too feared that I would now never wear khaki's again. But, I NEVER looked anywhere near as chic as shiny does in hers. . . I may reconsider come summer weather. . .

Mnsara, that's my issue with khakis! I don't know how else to style them other than with a black top!! Nowadays I do change up the shoes and wear more interesting ones (like giraffe print) but they still seem so limiting. I do wear khaki blazers; they seem easier to style, as a topper to jeans.

Yeah, but shiny, you rock those khaki's and black top! I don't think it would be possible to put so much pizzazz into my old ill-fitting Land's End khaki's.

For those who ARE rocking khaki's, like shiny, is there a khaki challenge in here? (This said from a person who can't even find 60-seconds to snap a pic of a v-neck sweater until the weekend. . . ) (. . . but has time to troll the YLF forum each day. . . )
