i went a little ssif crazy...you know...inge and angie and the fashionable horde. lost my head a bit. then i came home to a coat that i had ordered just before i left for weekend at bernie's...er...ylf.

black multi-textured sweatercoat/vest. angie approved the concept, did not see it on me.

#1: coat open/closed
#2: worn as vest (the sleeves zip off, people!) open/closed

pluses: sooo comfy and WARM! mixed textures--flat knit in the body and fleecy on the sleeves. did i mention the sleeves zip off?!?!?

minuses: i'm a bit concerned about the side view when closed because of the stomach pooch and the back bunchiness. it is very fitted so i won't be able to wear thick knits under--should not be a problem since the coat should function as the sweater.

#3 for comparison: the coat that i had waiting. it's a proper coat and can accommodate most knits i own except for the super thick ones.

which one(s) should i keep? to quote sveta--"10's only, please."

I really love #3. It's sleek, classic, and definitely a 10. I'm not as sure about the sweater coat. I don't love it as much. And it's cool how it can be a vest, but the proportions don't quite look right with it as a vest. But it sounds cozy!

I see #3 as a 10 , and the sweater coat/vest as a 7 or 8. Nothing "wrong" with it, just nothing particularly outstanding either. The second coat is very flattering on you - better fit across the back. No contest in my eye:)

Hm...the 2 coats seem completely different to me, comparing apples and oranges. They are both super cute on you! The side view shouldn't be a concern to you at all; it's just fine. (Besides, no one ever looks at you or I should say studies you from the side. I'm so done obsessing over side views!)

They have different attitudes, and the 2nd one is a bit more classic. My concern would be not being able to put anything heavy under #1, but I guess it depends on your needs. I hope this was helpful.

#3 is a 10, keep for sure. What kind of coat is it? Looks so cool and so you!
I like the sweater vest open but not closed from the side because it breaks up the smooth line. I don't see any tummy pooch but I do see the waviness along the back.

I love #3! #1/2 is alright. I think I would only keep the coat in #3.

I think the sweater coat/vest is great, an 8 or 9, very workable, but somehow a bit boring? 3 is a 10.

Thanks for reminding me about 10s. I have a ribbed cardigan, bought in May I think, that I have to force myself to wear. It's a boring 8 by the standard I'm applying here. Good to remember because I am in the market for cardigans!

i agree with you all--i am leaning on keeping #3, it's already in the hall closet. but i haven't worn it yet. unlike #1/2 which i've worn around the house for 3 days since i've gotten it. i am struggling with the conservative look. do i go for comfort or style?

@goldenpig: it's the rushworth wool coat in the finds. was going to get the leather sleeved trench, but got the wool one on impulse instead--more versatile. how many leather sleeved trenches does a girl need???

#3 is absolutely a 10. Stunning on you! But how does it feel and will it serve the purposes you want?

Now of course I am super curious about it. What brand?

And, another question: will a belt at the waist drive you bonkers? I don't mind belts a bit on thinner trench coats, but in the past I have found belted wool or wool blend style to be a bit fussy to wear.

The sweater coat is cool -- I love the zip off sleeves. But it doesn't look like an absolutely 10 to me, due to the issue you point to.

I'm not sure these serve the same purposes. The trench looks like a fall overcoat, something you take off when you get inside. The coat in 1 and2 looks like a coatigan -- something you wear both inside and outside. It looks snuggly but would work both casually and for work. From the picture #3 this piece photographs better and looks more tailored and 10-like. But 1 and 2 are the kinds of things I reach for frequently in California; a coatigan is the perfect fall/winter topper for both outside and inside -- outside it's never that cold outside and we keep it low, in the 60s, inside.

Having said all of this I got a long moto-style coatigan last year from Free People and although I did wear it constantly, I am purging it this year because mine was really bulky and I felt it overwhelmed my frame. So I'm looking for a new, more perfect coatigan or just cardigan in green for this year.

Overall, I would keep the coat in #3 if you feel you will get lots of wear from it given your lifestyle and climate (I can't be the judge of that). And for the other piece, I'm not sure if this concept can attain a 10 from photographs given its bulky knit nature and less camera friendly aspects. But I whole-heartedly endorse this garment concept if you decided to keep both pieces or keep looking for another.

2nd coat looks great on you but I have to know what #1 is! I love pieces like that.

I think #3 is amazing. Definitely a 10. #2... is not, although it is really cool. It seems like a lot of fabric on you. And I realize that makes no sense, as both are coats, I suspect it's the way the zippers break it up. It looks a bit overwhelming. I don't see any tummy pooch, but do agree the way it sits in the back is a bit off.

pouncing to write: the coat is a 10!! before reading any other comments. No reservations on this one at all.

I like the sweater coat/vest a lot. I see what you're talking about with the side view, but I wouldn't describe it the same way. It looks like a nice close fit with the coat zipped, is all. Are you happy with the back view? Would you wear it as a coat or a sweater or both? Personally, I find sweater coats hard, because they don't protect form the wind enough for me to wear them as outerwear usually. And then they're too bulky for indoor wear. Still, if the genre suits you, then I think this is a good one. Unless you really don't like the fit when it's zipped up. Like you, I do love the zip-off sleeves!

I like them both, and it seems that you could wear them for different purposes. I do agree that the #3 look is the best.

#3 Is a10 and looks gorgeous on you. I don't think it is boring and boots or a scarf would add some of your unique flair to it. As others have pointed out I don't think we are comparing the same things. 1/2 has a versatility to it because it has the zipped off sleeves. If you are only keeping one of these keep 3.

One is a 10 classic, the other a 10 eclectic. Not apples and oranges, cherries and pomegranates. If you can't justify both, which image do you need the coat to convey? Btw, the side view bothers me not at all.

#3 is Killer. GORGEOUS.

The sweater coat is a 10 too. (I saw it in person and it looks even better). It's a different animal because you can keep it on indoors. So we are essentially comparing a cardi with a coat. The decision depends entirely on your needs. You can probably fit a puffer coat over the cardi in the dead of Winter. The Burberry coat will only take you so far in Winter.

Agreed with the others -- that coat in #3 is fantastic and makes me want one. The sweater coat vest thing is pretty cool too, but not really comparable -- serves a different, more casual purpose. I would say that if you have good use for both, keep both.
