K/R: sequin jacket edition - YouLookFab Forum

Last week I ordered two sequined jackets to go with my LBD for a holiday party. Well, they have arrived and here they are. I tried them with the LBD in question as well as with jeans and a tee. I suspect that both actually look better with the jeans, but if I keep either it MUST work with the LBD as that is their purpose!

1-5: eliza J gold sequin bolero from Nordie's. I'm not sure about the shape on me; I think it may emphasize my sloping shoulders. It's the right size but does it look too small?

6-10: black sequin jacket from AE. These are the least shiny sequins I have ever seen and for that reason I find it a little too dull. Also, possibly too long? This one IS actually slightly small in the shoulder/bicep area but I don't think it shows.

So, is either of these a keeper or should I keep looking?

i love the bolero, but only with the jeans outfit. less sold on pairing it with this particular dress. the black sequin is too old for you. you need something FUN!

BJ, OMG you are so right about the black jacket being "old"! I was trying to figure out why I felt dumpy, and I've just realized it's because it looks like a dumpy middle-aged woman jacket!

I agree about the gold bolero not working with the dress... I think I need something with strong shoulders.

you know what...you need more of your chest above the neckline to show. the dress does not work because of the criss cross straps. shortens your neckline.

try with another dress and show me! i think you could make it work with lots and lots of stuff.

Yes to the gold color, but no that particular one. I like the bolero shape, too, but it isn't working with the dress.
Good ideas, but I think you need to keep shopping.

I agree with bj. I'm not sure either one of these is working with the neckline. And it's a tricky neckline to begin with. I like the bolero but am not sure about the fit -- I would be curious to see it a size larger.

I love the gold one and how it pops with black! But I agree that there is TMGO in the neck area with this particular dress. Too much competition for attention right there.

Sigh... was really hoping i would NOT have to buy another dress for this stupid party. If I do, it's going to be one with sleeves so I wouldn't need a jacket at all. But, BJ, I think you are right, and the dress may only work without anything over it. My other LBD, the Allsaints dress, is lace and doesn't feel seasonally appropriate at all. This is for my fiance's work holiday party (full of his coworkers whom I haven't met) so I don't want to do anything too out there (i.e. probably not my giant silver ball skirt). I figured LBD was my best bet.

Janet, I'm pretty sure in a larger size the shoulders would fall off...

I think it sounds like you all agree with me and I should return both of these.

Love the gold colour for you and I like it from the back but the front doesn't quite work with that dress. I agree with the others that this particular black one reads a little old on sweet you!

I don't think the bolero is going to work in any size. The problem is the cut. It makes you look very triangular, the way the opening spreads from top to bottom.

The other is better, but then, I am a middle-aged woman... LOL! Still, I agree that it isn't ideal for you. The way the front hangs is neither fish nor fowl. It's not a waterfall front, and it doesn't lie nicely flat either. It just looks poorly designed.

In a pinch, a nice long shiny pashmina-type shawl could work well, methinks. But that is perhaps too old lady too. I'm afraid I always rely on younger eyes to help me figure those things out.

i think the lace will work since it is all over the runway and stores?

the gold is marginally better (BJ1111 nailed with the black one being an "old lady" jacket), but I agree, keep looking. The gold is a fantastic color, though!

Wow, now I'm going to be the person right after Angie saying I agree with you that the gold is not flattering your lovely shape. But something similar with a little more structure would be perfect. The black is too blah for you.

Ok, black is def. going back. Am leaning toward returning the gold too ( sorry Angie) but I'm going to look for a different shape gold topper!

And, well, I'd I happen upon a better dress...then I won't be complaining. Still need shoes too... Don't think I can justify the $269 fluevogs for parties only.
