My Old Navy order has arrived! The two sweaters were Inge's Picks.
(Inge, you are very good at selecting cuts and fits that flatter! Amazing, given you have never, actually, seen me, irl.)

I picked the wrong size. These are all 1X and I think I need to go to 2X--maybe even a 3X on the cowl neck sweater? Heck, maybe I need to go to 3X on all of them?

I am including a detail shot of the arm of the cowl neck sweater. It is a dropped shoulder--I have sloping shoulders (shoulder pads were my friends) --and I am just not sure that this sort of sleeve won't look terribly sloppy on me once I size up.

You can really see the belt loops from those jeans I was wearing. Hate that.

What do you think?

It's always a little tricky to judge fit and how something will look on a person's body irl (Angie is a pro at that, of course:-), so I'm glad that you like the tops, Alana. I do too.

The cowl neck sweater is a marvelous colour on you (and again, so fresh and fab with the white jeans). It's definitely worth trying a size up (not sure if you need the 2X or 3X, it will depend on how much difference there is between sizes). The dropped shoulder looks fine here to my eye, so I'm holding thumbs it will be OK in the larger size too.

I'm not sure that you need a bigger size in the handkerchief hem sweater, this one seems to fit you nicely in the photos. Is it pulling somewhere or does it feel uncomfy to you, Alana? And again, the grey is lovely with the white jeans. I wonder though if you'll feel happier in the grape colour? That is going to look beautiful on you.

The V-neck tee is a lovely style for you, I agree that sizing up is a good idea.

I'm so impressed that you can take such good selfies. I'm absolutely terrible at it. I think all three sweaters are flattering on you, but I'm not sure about the sizes.

The *fit* issue in #2 (the black handkerchief hem) is simply that it isn't long enough. It also needs to be more fluid--all of them do--in order for me to feel comfortable. See how the top drapes on the mannequin? I want that.

I see what you mean about the handkerchief sweater, Alana, although I personally like this length on you too. I vote go for it and try the next size up for a more fluid fit.

I agree that a size up in 1 and 3 would be a good thing to try. (I wouldn't go 2 sizes up - in my experience ON plus sizes are pretty far apart between sizes.) With 2, I see what you're talking about re the length, but I also think it looks OK as is. You might want to try it with a less contrasting bottom and see if you like it at all.

The dropped shoulder seam thing gets me too - it is not the most flattering look on me and it often feels constricting, since I've got narrow sloping shoulders. But it's very trendy right now so it's hard to completely avoid. So far I've tried to only choose tops with this detail that are also noticeably drapey and not stiff or bulky, for the most figure flattery possible.

Thanks Suja! So good to hear. It isn't hard to imagine someone rolling their eyes and saying, "Oh, just get on with it already!" But I am absolutely never worried about that here--and you are definitely part of the reason why. So, thanks.

Dark red is your colour, Alana. Try a size up in the red cowl and the grey V-neck.

I agree that one and three are worthy of another chance a size up. You do look very nice in bright colors Alana. If you have a chance to try out a brighter blue based red (verging on fuchsia), I bet it would look stunning on you.

I'm another one here who is really enjoying watching your journey. I think for many of us, when we decided to overhaul our wardrobes we really bought a ton of stuff to see what stuck, eventually working on whittling it down to a reasonable size. It's enlightening to watch you be picky and persistent from the start with the goal of only a handful of pieces. Two points for the self control of not settling!

I really like the colors of 1 and 3 on you. The length of 2 looks fine. The cowel neck of the first sweater seems to draw the eye away from the shoulders and give a more relaxed ,less tailored feel that works with the dropped shoulders.

Alana, a stylish friend with narrow sloping shoulders wears some foam pieces that slip under the bra straps and give a gentle boost that improves fit without looking like shoulder pads. They look like these:

Joy--that's good to hear about the cowl neck. I try to stay away from this sleeve, too, because it is bad for putting sweater over. (I have photos of myself from January of 2012 where I wore heavy sweaters like this with a cardigan.) I will have to get what Angie and Inge call a gilet. Thanks for the tip about the shoulder foam. Amazing what's out there!
