Perhaps try them on again tomorrow and see if your doubts have perished. Sometimes that works for me. But I agree you want to be certain that you love them. Are there items you buy and you know immediately or do you usually need some time?
I really like these on you, especially rolled up with the sandals. No doubt about it - keep!
I haven't read all of the comments but here are my thoughts:
- The quality will really grow on you. You can wash these and they get better with age. And you can always sell them on eBay if you tire of them or consign them; TRs hold their value better than other premium denim precisely because of the quality.
- The back pockets are not for every one. Some people regard them as tacky and dated. In fact, the trend now is for quiet, J Brand type pockets. But I don't mind being a little out of step with mainstream or forum opinion. Have you tried Brianas which are like Camerons but without the flaps. (More here and here.) They do have the horseshoe stitching though.
- I don't hem mine. I fold them once when wearing them at full length. At full length, there is too much scrunching on me for my taste. I fold them twice, or very carefully even three times, for a cropped look. All depends on my bootie or shoe. I love the flexibility!
- If there is extra bagging around the crotch, I have sized down. I just got a pair of Camerons a few months ago in a pale, pale summer wash (they were a model from last Summer that I tried on but didn't keep because it was in the 90s and I spent my premium denim "budget" on shorts). I had to size from a 26 to a 25 to get rid of the extra fabric in the crotch. As you can see from the pic there's still a bit of extra fabric there. They are now a slim boyfriend and I admit I need to unbutton the waist sometimes, but they fit perfectly everywhere and not having the extra fabric in the crotch makes them look so much sleeker. Here they are folded twice. And I'm still playing with the Wilt topper (K/R? K/R? and I ordered it in one size bigger to compare!).
- Overall, I think these are completely age appropriate especially considering your classic toppers. And I love Angie's comment about the longevity of this look.
- In sum, I might try one size down in these or if the crotch fabric is not too bad (I can't tell from the pic, too dark) stay with these. Or, you could try some Brianas for a slightly more quiet pocket. Check eBay for Brianas too, last year's models are still great and you can save money! PM me if you have any fit questions, I've tried a lot of Camerons and Brianas on!

To Denise's point, I LOVE flap pockets - good for my booty and for my style! Don't care if they are in or not.
Suz, I quite like them on you. No worry about the age appropriateness, what a foolish question from an Urban Prince! You really own this look. Period!
As for the fit I would go with the feeling you have in them. Do they make you feel fab? Does this extra fabric bother you? I know that for me does not matter what everybody says if something bothers me I will tend not to wear it very often.
First things first - "My thighs are huge" - ???!!!? Where? I enlarged the pics, got out my magnifying glass, "Really? Suz has large thighs? I've got to see!" Humm....Suz, I think you need to go back to elementary school and re-learn the definition of "huge." Nothing on you is even remotely in the vicinity of huge!

That said, I love these jeans on you from the front, and the back pockets are OK - I don't dislike them, but - and maybe it's just the darkness of the photos - they look like the pockets sit a bit low, which I know they are supposed to on BF's, but I think they sit lower than they do on Mo's. How does the pocket placement feel and look IRL? Now that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as I think overall they look fantastic, and I think they are supposed to look that way from the back. The back pockets on my Gap BF's hang low, but the fabric isn't premium denim so it's not so heavy and noticeable.

Have you tried 7 for All Mankind and G-Star Raw? I tried both of those recently and absolutely loved them.

As far as age, well, I'm 52 and I still like what's trendy and fashionable. I figure as long as I'm not wearing a mini skirt and looking like a hoochie mamma, it's all goodie.
Well, to be honest - I'm not crazy about them. The leg fit just looks too big to me. I'm also not real crazy about the pocket flaps - for one, I think they are sitting too low on you bum, and another, I think the TR logo is just too LOUD! I have a pair of TRs and I haven't worn them in awhile because of those pocket flaps and logo. They are just too "busy" for me. So, I am jaded. Have you tried other premium denim BFs Suz? (If you love these, then I say keep!)

I am answering without reading the other posts to try not to sway my opinion.

I think these are trendier than your norm, balanced out by the darker wash. I think these are sassy and chic, both which fit your style. I see style less about age than who you are. I have never been cool and never will be. But, I had someone today tell me how pretty I looked. I will take it.

So, I think you have to be true to you. I feel like these mesh with your style, but you have to be comfortable in them. Not just with how comfy they are on, but how you look in them too.

Go with your heart on this one. These have to be a love to keep, but if you love them, they are keepers.

Marley, thank you for your honesty! Since you really love and wear BF jeans (and wear them brilliantly, I may add) your opinion matters enormously. Those pocket flaps may indeed be sitting "too low" on me. Because of my long rise, you know? The whole jean may technically be sitting too low. I am not worried much about the logo because I would tend to cover it with a belt. So that's sort of a non-issue for me. But I have not tried other premium BFs. Just the Gap and Gap original selvege jean.

Karie - agreed. They do sit lower on me than on Mo and that was indeed one of my concerns. And you know, it's just a tough call. Some moments I think it looks totally fine, and other moments, I'm less certain. I have not tried 7 for All or G-Star Raw. Putting them on my list to try for sure.

Denise, I was hoping you would weigh in and your thoughts are so helpful because you are the Cameron expert. I could tell right away about the quality. I haven't tried the Brianas...maybe I will take a look at those, too. It is weird...normally I dislike back pocket detail but I do not mind it on these somehow. I guess I see it as part of the vibe. Whether it works on me, personally, is another matter, but I do not dislike it in the abstract (or on you or Mo or anyone else I have seen it on).

Actually...now that I think about it. The SAs were obviously wearing TR jeans at the store. But not the BF style. And their jeans were tight and had that pocket detail and I did not like it at all. I only like it on a BF jean. Hmmm.

Very interesting that you don't bother to hem. I guess it would help with resale value if it came to that.

The SA thought I needed a size down. So I tried it and I could not even do up the top button. It is so strange -- it felt as if there was an enormous difference between the sizes on me. So there's some possibility that I have an "off" jean...they only had the one in my size. (Or any size, for that matter...they seemed to have one jean in each size, period.) Obviously, this is in Toronto, not Kingston. I got them there.

Sveta, Una - than you for your thoughts!

Glory, it's not so much that I am feeling doubts about the purchase or second guessing. It's more that I want to make sure I'm not crazy to like them. I feel pretty fab in them, although the extra fabric at the crotch was giving me a bit of pause and I was wondering about the length.

ETA: Thistle, just saw your comment and it is very wise. Thank you. And by the way, you are pretty!!

But yes, you are right - "cool" really isn't me; classy sometimes is, and a bit sassy, too. And maybe...smart? Juxtaposition and contrast can be smart.

Isn't that weird, that the 24s were dramatically smaller? But I believe it, TRs are all sewn very well but by hand.

I took another look at the pictures and I love the way they sit on you! Front is perfect, and I actually don't see any bunching in the crotch, but like I said, the fabric is dark.

I think these will go great with your black booties too!

I have these, but they have lots of distressing. I think the 25 would fit well. It's hard to find TR boyfriend jeans without a lot of distressing or patches such as my Baja Brianas. If you are OK with the pockets, I think they are very tomboy and cute! I think they have a very different vibe when loose. And I have a fitted pair of straight legged TR Billys and I think the patch is very flattering to the back side! But I do know that in a lot of places the TR pocket is associated with a certain type of hair cut & color, tight tees with no fear of bling look that goes along with girls riding in lifted trucks. When I wear these pockets it's almost like I'm not afraid of being uncool, which makes me cooler. Haha.

Hah! The patch pockets on these jeans (which I wore all day) are what I like most about them! And Greg too, actually. They droop, hang low, are baggier on me than on Suz - and I can't help but like the visual effect. Their FULL length seals the deal for me. I like these so much better than my Gap BFs.

This has been a very interesting read. Style is SO subjective :). Suz, you must be more confused than ever

It is sooo interesting to see all the varied responses. I think seeing how you feel about them in a day or two will be the key. If you are loving them you will know its time to cut the tags!
Denise, I am howling with laughter. But the ebay link did not work, you devil!

Angie, I'm actually feeling pretty good! I know that not everybody will like these. Or at least not in a K/R post when they aren't even styled. And I am really glad that people like Marley and Sarah and a few others have spoken up to say they do not care for them. It is one thing if someone who hates BFs, period, announces that she does not like them, but another when somebody who does like BFs says it.

At the end of the day, though, it's about how I feel in them. So I think the real test will be wearing them around the house for a day. That way I will also get to hear hubbie's more considered opinion when he's able to see them in motion.

I agree that being able to wear them full length is very important. I gave my GAP BFs to my daughter because I couldn't wear them full length. I saw some photos where I was trying to do that, and even though I am a few inches shorter than you, I cringed. They were just off a fraction -- but that fraction was enough to really bug me. In a way it was worse than if they were obviously too short!

I can wear the GAP original fit selvege jeans full length, and they are pretty darn good, but they had distressing and I didn't want distressing. I already have a pair of distressed slouchy skinnies, which I adore!!!! Adore. Adore!!! (Can I possibly say that enough times. I love those jeans.) But I only need one pair of distressed jeans. (And anyway, my daughter had an emergency situation when we were travelling and needed a pair of pants, so luckily mine fit her! )

I might try GAP's non distressed selvege jean again. The first ones I tried simply did not fit properly at all -- but knowing GAP's inconsistencies, that could be an anomaly.

In the end, I'm betting that I'll keep these and be really happy with them. As I said to K Can, I really like the contrast between these and my new J Crew toothpick jeans. Those are simple, plain, classic, and slim. These are loose, crazy, funky, and fun. I don't see why they can't live in the same closet.

You already have tons of responses that I am eager to read but I want to give you my first impression. I was prepared to be rough given your description - I was thinking that even if they look great on you, there is your own internal comfort factor to take into account and if they looked inappropriate I wanted to say so.

But I don't have to! I love the fit! The only thing I need to think about is the markings on the flap pockets (the flaps don't bother me in themselves). But they really don't bother me, and, after all, you are showing us with your shirt hiked up, which I am quite sure is not how you will be wearing them. Now I will read the responses and hope you are keeping and consider whether I need a pair myself!

Got it - thank you, Denise!

Yup - mine have this recycled hardware, too - it is a really cool and fun feature.

And yeah, let me join the "too cool to care" brigade.
Suz, I am so thrilled you raised this question, because I have been thinking a lot about your TR Cameron purchase and about Angie's same or similar TR purchase with no stretch and dark wash without distressing.

These ARE expensive premium denim jeans, but you wear this item predominantly in your life (I do, too), so the purchase price will be absorbed in the CPW and happiness factor quotient easily.

My husband came by and said "they look great. she should keep them, if they are comfortable." I think the fit is fantastic on you and I like the "boyish" lines and look on you, Suz. You're a natural for these.

My pondering, hesitation and reflection are all in the way I look at them on my body, because I'm not a big fan of flap pockets. That's just not my thing. I'm probably part of Camp Uncool, but I don't care, really. Who knows; I'll probably change my mind in a month and then want to go buy a pair with flap pockets. I've never tried them on, so I don't even know how they would look on my body type. On you, they look really good.

But, do you like the added detail of these jeans? What drew you to this particular style? Is your happiness factor high or still sorting itself out? I like the wash of these jeans. Yes, I know the price of them is a big "ouch," but denim is part of your life Urban Prince and you deserve premium, no matter what style you end up with. Denise's suggestion of Brianna (without the flap) is something I would consider along with the Camerons, when I'm ready to replace my J. Brand jeans (which I am underwhelmed with and their bagginess factor).

You are one of my style icons and I look to you for your adventurous shopping spirit. I find you leading the way for me, at times, and I'm grateful that you are always looking.
Oh, Vicki, please give your husband a big hug for me. I love how our families sometimes get into the act here. I mean even the spectator families. By the way, you would look fantastic in a pair of these!! No question.

I do like the detail on these, yes -- which is weird, because truly it is not usually my "thing." I don't think I would like it if these were my only jeans. But I also bought the very simple J. Crew jeans at the same time. As to how I would like it over time, well, only time would tell, i guess. Maybe I'd get sick of it and maybe I would only grow to love it more!

What drew me to the style? I wanted a cotton BF style jean that was not too baggy and not distressed in a dark (ish) wash. I wanted to be able to wear it full length (unlike the GAP BFs). And I have seen Denise wear her Camerons for at least a year and really, really loved them on her. Although our figures are not the same we are close to the same height and measurements. As well as age. And while our lifestyles are not identical there are some overlaps in terms of our daily needs.

In the summer, with Denise as my inspiration, I pulled out my slouchy skinnies with distressing from BR that I hadn't been wearing for a while due to fears that I would be perceived as mutton dressed as lamb. And I was amazed at how much I really liked them. No, loved them. I still love them, but there are times when a girl does not want distressing, you know?

Then, when Angie bought a pair of the Camerons, it made me think about them again. I figure if Angie is willing to lay down cash on these, there is some likelihood that the style will last for a couple of years and that she considers the quality high. I have never been sorry about an Angie recommended purchase before. I may not always buy what she recommends, but when I have decided to keep one of her recommended items, I have loved it.

So that, in the end, was what drew me to them. Because we know that Angie is rarely wrong!
Suz - I just got finished reading all of the responses. Wow! Bet you're kind of sorry that you posted the question, huh???? I just want to add, that the bottom line is whether or not you love them? It doesn't really matter if I or anyone else isn't crazy about them. If I thought they were awful, I would have told you that - well, maybe not used the word "awful" but I would have tried to kindly get the point across. But, I don't feel that way about these - AND - Angie loves them and thinks they would really add aLOT to your style/wardrobe! So, I say - if YOU love them, then Keep them, and enjoy! (And, in the meantime, I think I'll get out my TRs again and see how I feel about them this year! Who knows, maybe I'll welcome them back into my jeans "rotation!")

I'll echo Marley. It seems that you really love these jeans, so whether or not others like them is really irrelevant.

My only reason for adding another comment is because you seem concerned about the cost. One of the unspoken issues around age-appropriate fashion is that what seems fine today might be borderline, or even uncomfortable, in a year or two, especially if it is outside your normal style. These jeans definitely have a "cool" factor, but that also might affect their longevity and the ability to be worn as part of a dressy casual capsule in order to justify the cost.

Hey Suz, for you I am posting these awful pictures of me in my Camerons. They are not the same ones - I got the ones Mo posted, with stretch, and had to size down 2 sizes, and they are still huge on me. I can pull them off EASIlLY without unbuttoning. And they are probably not even flattering. But I love them for the same reason I perversely love anything that makes me feel like a skater boy.

So here you go. Last picture literally below my hips (not how I wear them, just to show how big they really are on me!).

Una, thank you so much for the visuals! So it's obvious that the way these look will depend to a large extent (haha) on the way we look, individually...we are talking about relationship of hip width to bum size to rise and that is so individual. Got it. It's all a question of whether I like the way they fall on me.

I feel no urge to look like a skater boy, but I do love a bit of bagginess and slouch in a pant, especially a jean.

Gaylene, I am glad you weighed in. And that is an important consideration when considering CPW. I don't think of these as my "smart casual" jeans, actually. Despite the fact that they are more expensive than any other jeans I've ever owned I would in fact consider them part of my CASUAL-casual capsule. In other words, these jeans would the ones I would reach for for my work-at-home days. I might also wear them to the pub with a friend or with hubby, or on a writing retreat in the mountains, or (possibly) on a weekend in the city hanging out with friends. And maybe shopping. I would not wear them for readings, presentations, visits to mother, etc.

Do I love them? Hmmm. Not sure. I think if I loved them I would not have posted a K/R. I like them, and wonder if I would grow to love them. Only a day of wearing will prove it.
They look great. The only negative is that I think there is too much material at the fold. Would you be altering the length? You might need a trendier top too, maybe something more boxy or flow-y (Silk tee, oversized pocket tee, blouse???) to make the look 100% intentional. IMO.

Side note: I am secretly waiting for the time when all of us stop bagging out our clothes. I am in mourn of tailored
Wow! I can't believe how much I have learned from one thread here on the forum...I would love to see pictures of these jeans with your classic pieces that Angie talked about to see how they play in your closet.

This is exactly why I can't calculate CPW on anything. I wouldn't ever buy anything that was expensive because I'd be too worried about getting the cost per wear down. Just a personality thing I guess.
I have been missing on all the fun on the forum lately but I am so glad I found this thread. So informative. I personally am not a big fan of low pockets on jeans, Suz. but other than pockets, I really like these on you. Have you made the decision yet?
No decision yet, Mona. I am going to wear them for a day around the house and see how they feel to me.

Mtgirl, I can understand your hesitation about buying an expensive item. I think when it's something that we wear about 300 days a year (for me, that would be jeans) it's pretty straightforward, though. True, I won't wear the same pair of jeans 300 days a year, but I don't have a lot of pairs -- I typically keep one jean of each cut in my wardrobe, so I'll have one BF jean, one legging jean for tucking into boots, one skinny, one bootcut. And one or two coloured options. Anyway, even if I were to wear these an average of once per week my CPW would be less than $5 within a year and I would probably be wearing them more than that. And of course I would be wearing them for longer than a year.

I used to blanch at the high cost of premium denim, and if I worked in an office and could only wear it once a week, I probably would still stay away from it on my budget. But if you look at it as my workwear (which it is) it becomes an entirely different proposition.

I can try to snap some pics with tops for a sense of how they would look styled. I purposely did not style these for the photos because I knew I would get a wider variety of responses this way. Once we've styled the item up, it will probably look pretty good, regardless.

Zap, it will make you happy to know I also bought a pair of tailored jeans at the same time. No K/R on those because I am keeping! And yes, the jeans need to be styled to look intentional. In my case maybe not so much with flowy tees.
Good morning Suz! Ringing back in as I have found the words to describe what I am feeling when I see these on you. Let me start by saying I QUITE like the fit and the lower placement of the rear patch pockets I think also works. To me the wiskering and steampressed wrinkles (esp at the back of the knee) feel contrived. When I see your posts I feel you have achieved that effortlessly chic look marvelously and so anything contrived feels off for me when I think of *your* style. With that said... If you cut the tags you will LIVE in these jeans I feel. And they will wash and being 100% cotton they will conform to your body relatively quickly and then... well effortlessly trendy chic will follow But yes, wearing them for a day will be the best start to know how they will serve you.
Hi Suz --

Lots of interesting give-and-take on these; of course how you feel in them matters most.

I have purchased items, spendy and otherwise, that have me marveling "oh I don't know if this is perfect for [age, lifestyle, body shape] but I want to keeeeeeep" -- and then I've purchased ones where I just couldn't *quite* fall in love no matter how much my head said "this is just what you said you wanted/needed" and was glad to return. In fact I have one of the tags-on latter in my closet, cough cough.

Reading the lines and in-betweeen, I can't say I have a sense of which side you're on....

My .02: I love them from the front but not the back -- if you could find a pair/size that fits more like Mo's rear/back thigh view I'd be 100% "keep."

[But then I'm always encouraging the man in my life to wear jeans he can't stuff a couple of cats into, so there's that.]

Good luck with the decision-making!
I love them! I don't think they are too young for you at all - funky, modern jeans with more classic tops is a perfect combination IMO.

I used to be a $20 Kmart jeans girl until I tried on my first pair of G Star Raw jeans. I paid full price (over $200) and have never looked back. I now buy expensive jeans (I now wait for sales so they are around half price) and cheaper tops (mostly). It works for me and I think helps keep my look current.

Enjoy I say!!
