K/R Banana Republic Cream Trench (ETA Verdict in comments)

Mine arrived today and I was so excited to get it out of the box that I busted a nail! I am hoping to find a "PPP" trench to replace my past its prime grey trench (#1)

I like the cut and fit - my only concern is that the colour may be too warm or yellow for my skin tone. It is nearly the same shade as my J.Crew Tipped Peacoat (#2) (waving to peacoat buddies!), but I'm not sure it works unrelieved by the black trim. Also, it looks goofy open, but I am not as worried about that.

I took a pic with a couple of scarves for comparison - one in black/teal and one in grey and a cooler shade of cream. The light in my normal photo spot is on the warm side so I took a couple in the more neutrally lit bathroom for comparison.

Keep or Return? And if keep, what on earth do I do with all the extra belt? Is there a neat way to tie it or am I meant to have it tailored.

I think the new trench looks great! If you're not going to be wearing it open much (which I assume you wouldn't be, since a trench doesn't quite fulfill the same niche as a moto), I wouldn't worry about what it looks like when it's open.

I don't think that the color looks bad with your skin tone...but cameras can really play havoc with colors. So I will bow out from that question.

I think that the belt is supposed to be long. I tried a trench on in BR a few months ago, and the gal tied the belt on me. She said that's how it's intended to be worn (tied). I don't know how she tied it, though, and I'm terrible with knots so can't give any more info. So I don't think you need to have it tailored--you just need to figure out how to tie it. If you have a BR in your area (B&M store), they could probably tell you how to do it.

I love it on you! The color doesn't seem too warm at all, and the dark buttons and the A-line cut really suit you and make it more special. No idea what to do with the extra length on the belt -- I'd just tie it and let it hang the way you have it, but I have a high tolerance for things that aren't as neat as they could be.

Keep! It's a beautiful trench coat that fits you well. I understand from where you're coming with being concerned about the shade (my coloring is like yours), but I think it works really well with the scarf.

I think it looks lovely on you! If you are still concerned, maybe a pic in natural daylight would help, but from what I can see it looks fab!

I think the BR trench looks FAB on you, Emily (but I own one, so of course I'm biased). FWIW, I plan to either tie the belt in front or buckle it behind the coat for everyday wear. I suppose if the length really bothers you you could have it shortened/altered by a seamstress.

I think the color suits you beautifully. (And I don't think it looks "goofy" open at all….if it does, then I look goofy in mine, too!) I'm a Bright Spring (warm, bright, clear) so the bright eggshell tone of this trench is perfect for me. Not sure what your coloring is, but from the photos this looks lovely on you. Like you said, it's very similar in color to your JCrew peacoat.

All that said, if you have doubts then you have to trust your instincts. But I give it two thumbs up!

It's really tough to judge the colour, Emily - but from here it looks good. It actually looks on the cool side on my monitor, but my eyes may be playing tricks because Nancy says it's warm and she owns it.

I think the belt is meant to be tied -- that's how I wear all my trenches - never buckled.

And if you think it looks goofy undone (although I don't) -- one trick I use (that some people frown on, apparently) is to tie the ties in back. I just do it so I don't lose the belt.

Thanks for the yays! I really do love the fit. I think I will try to borrow DH's eye, or at least camera-weilding fingers, in natural light tomorrow and see how it looks. I've tried to google a bit for pictures of people with similar colouring in a similar colour but no luck as yet. I did, however, turn up a neat way to tie the very long belt c/o extra petite. Wow, I didn't expect the verdict to be unanimous! I love the style of the coat and the fit is perfect.

I feel a traitor, but I decided to return. Here's why:

1. The colour, which was the source of my initial trepidation. I'm just not sure cream is my best shade and I have been looking for something in more of a stone hue. When I searched for pictures of people in trenches I saw plenty of the cool stone shade that I want.

2. My Husband's opinion, which I don't give too much weight, but in this case mirrored mine. His words were: "It's okay, I guess, if you really wanted a white coat. I like your other trench coat better."

3. It's still early! A lot of stores don't have their spring stock in yet, so there will likely be more options available if I wait a little while. Plus, if I find myself really regretting my decision to return, I may be able to re-purchase this coat later.

Thanks again for lending me your stylish eyes and kind words! I am sure my perfect trench is (or will be) out there...
