Is this right for MIL 80th Birthday

Do you think these potential outfits are too arty/avant garde for my MIL's 80th birthday?

1-2-3: Outfit with long skirt (skirt Rick Owens, top Zara -- tags still on please ignore the hanger strings and tag bumps).

4-5-6: Same outfit with shorter Rick Owens skirt.

I prefer the way 1-2-3 looks but is it too dramatic? I don't want to be disrespectful or look like I'm upstaging.

Or -- should I go for something altogether more conservative? For example Kut Catherine boyfriend jeans with heels and a jacket?

I love the long drapey skirt here and it looks perfectly appropriate and stylish to my eye. What is the venue? Unless it's somewhere fancy schmancy, I think this would work great!

But to give us more context, will your MIL understand that you are dressing up , or does she relates dressing up with more conventional/ conservative outfits ?

I think the first version with the long skirt is great! I'm with Kelly, I think I'd wear that one if it fits the venue.

I'm with Celia--#1 is divine as far as fashion goes, but I think my MIL would not relate to the tank straps and muscle-T look as much as a more conventional "dressy" outfit. So you need to know your audience.

If the weather is very warm there the top seems fine too, and really looks lovely with the rest of the outfit.

Most of my family and friends over say, 65 up to whatever, would love either outfit, and a few of them are daily conservative.

My favorite is 1-3. It looks wonderful on you. I don't think an 80 year old is going to understand either of these looks, but a skirt or dress would be better than pants, especially jeans. Seriously, she is nearly of an era where jeans signaled that you are a farmer and women did not wear pants (except for a few famous exceptions). My mother at 80 wanted to see me in a bright color, preferably pink. Dress to please yourself and your husband.

Both outfits are great but no 1-3 is really smashing. My mum (who is in her 70s) would prefer 1-3 because it looks like you have dressed up for the occasion (the other outfit looks more casual) and she would appreciate that. And she would like the longer skirt.

Both looks are terrific, but #1 is a real standout. As long as MIL is open to your dramatic side, and isn't expecting something traditional, I say go for it!

My mother (87) would love 1-2-3. She has dementia, so she would probably tell you she loved it 10 times that night (haha) but she would absolutely love the specialness and fun of it, and the shoes! It's gorgeous, and I hope you will wear your hair up with it, which for me adds to the whole look. Please wear this outfit! It's perfect.

Is it terrible that I have never EVER worried that my look would upstage someone? Maybe because it never would have.

I'm sure MIL knows your style already, and nr 1-3 is just fab and very You! Also curious if you wore the skirt like Debs said (with the back on front)-which is an awesome idea! And I can see why Angie raved about the ankle straps, they are grounding perfectly the skirt's length here, wow!

Thank you so much for your opinions, wisdom and support. I think I'm going to bring a Vince shift dress and a brigtblue lace dress as more conservative options. And then let my boyfriend decide (we're not married but act as if). It's a two day car trip so bringing extra options is no big deal.

The first is fab. Fancy but not too fancy for the occasion I'd think. But it does all depend. If your MIL has that Prairie Home Companion streak, it could be awkward... So I think bringing an alternative is smart.

I agree with all that 1/2/3 is lovely on you. If you would like to make it a bit more conservative, how about wearing a tank top with more coverage in the straps, ie not the spaghetti straps. The spaghetti straps do look a little bit lingerie-ish which Gma might look askance at? Whatever you choose, you will look great!
