Interview suit attempt #1

So this isn't the cream and pearls that Angie suggested, but it's a start.

This is a Nine West suit marked down to $79 from $240. It has a light purple and grey pinstripe which you can't see in the picture. The suit came with an ugly purple shell so I switched it out for this ruffled blouse I already own. I definitely cannot wear heels with the pants though... they might be a tad short with flats? I have no idea where to find plus size suits with a tall inseam...

I don't plan on wearing the shoes in the picture with the suit... I just don't have anything else here with me.

Sooo... should I keep looking? Macy's has a sea of suits so I can definitely go back and try again!

Even though you can't see it, the colour sounds really interesting and the discounted price is amazing!

I don't think that I am qualified on the PPL issue, but if you feel the pants are too short then maybe you need a longer pair?

I also wondered whether it is just the way you are standing or if the jacket is pulling a little bit?

Also, had you considered a skirt suit?

I don't think this is bad at all (I know how miserable it is to try and find a good suit on short notice). Is there any way we can get a picture with the jacket unbuttoned?

I think the suit looks good, and I don't think it's too short with the flats. I don't know about that particular blouse with it, but I work in a pretty corporate environment, so maybe I'm biased.

I like the suit Marianna, but am not sure about the look of the lace coming out the bottom of the jacket. I like the top part of the blouse though

I like that is is grey (not black) and I think the pant length looks good with flats (but others that are PPL experts may know more). I usually like suit jackets unbuttoned to relax the look just bit.

I like the color of the top underneath, but I am also not keen on the lace out the bottom. I think lace down the front, lace around the neck, etc. would be a nice feminine touch. I don't know what other tops you have already to suggest. . .

I think it could work very nicely, but if it was me I'd also go back to Macys', bring a cuppa into the dressing room, and try on everything that catches my eye. Then bring home 2 (maybe 3) and retry until one wins. (That's why I spend too much time returning my losers.)

Just wanted to say--my only quibble with the lace hem peeking out from under the hem of the jacket is that it breaks up the line right now, since the jacket is buttoned. I wear knit/woven tops longer than my suit jacket all the time--the important thing is just to keep the jacket unbuttoned. Now, I don't like to see a button-down shirt tail peeking out from under a suit jacket--those should be hidden (and preferably tucked in), but a non-buttondown top being longer than the suit jacket? I have no problem with it, and think it can even be elongating in the right circumstances.

Marianna - I think the suit will work and yes you'll need to experiment with shoes, etc. So I"d keep it as a very solid Plan B. And keep looking. In an interview, you want to feel fabulous from the inside out. And part of that will be a suit that blows you away. I don't hear that in your "voice" in this posting.

You are SO pretty. In every picture you look pretty!

I love the idea of a pinstripe but a purple pinstripe is not a versatile option. The suit fits well! Great length on the pants. What's the jacket fit like at the back?

I think it's an excellent fall back option and that shade of purple is brilliant against your skin tone. But I would keep on looking. How does that sound?

Thanks for the great input everyone! Solid Plan B suit it is! I'll go back to Macys today and see what else I can find.

There was one very nice skirt suit with an interesting houndstooth print (it wasn't black and white, it was all black, but the fabric had this houndstooth "sheen" to it) that I really liked, but I wasn't sure if wearing a skirt would be practical. I will be using public transit in freezing cold Chicago and I don't want to my legs to freeze! Any advice? I could wear tall boots and then switch into nice shoes when I get to the interview, but will it be weird carrying around an extra pair of boots? I guess I don't need to stress too much because everyone knows me already and I've worked in the office for a year, but still! I want tho wow them!

I'll be back with more options, but I'll keep this one on hand just in case.

If you do go with a skirt, how about legwarmers Marianna? Maybe you could even layer legwarmers over hose for more warmth. You could slip them off right before getting off the train/bus and will have to brave the cold for just a little bit. Or even once you enter the building I suppose. I'm so excited for you!

Well, I bought another pant suit today... this one seems to fit very well, but it's rather boring. It's a grey Tahari suit... originally priced at $340 (marked down 60%). It seems like a better suit than the first one. I also got a yellow top to wear with it. Pictures tomorrow...

I wish I could hire Angie to help me with suit shopping! I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.

First of all congratulations with the interview Marianna!! I have a really good feeling about this: they already know and love you, and they know what you can do!

Can't wait to see pictures of the second suit. A yellow top sounds great too.

One question though: why is it that you couldn't wear the knee-high boots to the interview if you were to get the skirt suit? Is that just not done in the US? I think it is a very professional and stylish look...

Marianna, often so called boring suits end up being the best style to have because they don’t date and you don’t get sick of them. I think my 6 year old suit might be classified as boring but I love it! And it’s still going strong:

Skirt suits are fabulous too and I like Inge’s suggestion. Just don’t know if you have dressy boots?

I'm late to the party but I want to echo Angie. The pinstipe suit is nice but not as versatile as one of the ordinary ones. I love how you styled it. And that is the key to the "boring" suits, I'm learning. It's all about you how style the other things you wear with the suits - shoes, shirt, accessories. You have some great accessories so try to think about how you can incorporate those.

Inge, I don't have any dressy boots. And I have skirt phobias. I'm much more comfortable in pants, and I want to feel confident at the interview.

Angie, your suit is lovely. And I definitely see your point. The purple pinstripe is very limiting...
