Inspiration from my original hair icon: Winona Ryder??

So, I've got an appointment next week for a much overdue hair trim and color, and I am very inspired by Ms Ryder's hair in the new Rag and Bone video. I have to say that I am easily drawn into ANYTHING she does short-hair-wise and always have been, so there's that. But lately I have been feeling like I want fewer layers (I canceled my last hair appointment to grow some out) and my stylist has been itching to put back in some darker lowlights to get depth back into my hair. (With the layers and the blonde and the tendency to puff, I often feel like a stereotypical perimenopausal woman on her way to the golf course. No offense. But YKWIM.)

I like some of what is happening with Winona in these pics -- the edginess of the longer pieces in front, the delicate fringe at the back of the neck, the piecey-ness at the bang. And there is NO PUFF.

Am I insane?

I like the last photo because it has a little more structure. I vote grow out your hair and see how you feel about the longer look. It might annoy the heck out of you - or you'll love it. Only one way to find out.

I like the idea of no more blonde too. Fun process and onto the next adventure.

I will say, I love her too - she is so ridiculously pretty and delicate, that she can wear looks like this well. You have a similar delicacy to your look and in your bone structure, so I can see it working on you. My take on it though - is that it might not look as good in reality as it does here . The pieces and the hair in the front /bangs would drive me nuts getting in my eyes. I hear you on the puff-factor though, as it is my personal fear too . Do you have a lot of hair? Thick, thin, fine, straight, not? How is it ?

Thanks Angie. I so respect your opinion. I'm especially interested in the non-blonde comment as I've been batting that back and forth, so thanks for the encouragement there.

Lisa, I hear you. Like EVERYTHING celeb-related, it's probably not as great IRL. But I'm focusing on pic 4, as Angie suggests, and I don't love "perfect" hair, so I think there are some useful ideas here for me. My stylist is a big interpreter, so this is really about inspiration more than copying, which is probably a good thing.

PS My hair is very fine and straight with some bend. I do have a fair amount of it, though.

Well, I can't give advice on the nuances of short hair. But I like the inspiration pictures and going darker would be fun.

I think this will totally work for you - sounds like your stylist knows what to do to interpret, and this is indeed an excellent example of imperfect short hair. I struggle with that imperfect business myself...

viva --in the past year or so, i've gone darker, and i'm suprised that i like it as much as i do. and that the reaction by most people (my mother being the exception), is how much younger it makes me look.
as for the cut, i'm a fan of simple and easy, so if this cut is actually easy to maintain on a daily basis, i think its a great look. my concern is that often the things that look simple on celeb's are often difficult to maintain.

Speaking of puffy golf course hair.....just a couple of days ago I saw a picture of my mom, probably in her 50s, with her puffy and permed blonde hair - on the golf course!!

I think it would look really great - but I think you may have to wait for the front to grow a bit longer before you could truly get a similar style, wouldn't you?

Edit: looking at more of your pics, maybe I'm wrong. It might be more of a styling thing - and the color of course you already said would likely go darker. Can't wait to see what you choose!

Cute haircut inspiration! If your hair is similar in texture, I say go for it. If your texture is much different, you will be fighting the whole way. From what you describe (fine and straight with a lot of it), this could be perfect for you.

Go for it! It is only hair. Experiment! I found that if I did not play around with my hair a lot it looks its best. Make sure your stylist shows it exactly how to dry it.

I say it's worth a try. The colour shift will be fun! That's what fall is for, and it will suit you.

As for the cut, it would suit you too, since you share Winona's delicacy and grace, and I think it will work with your hair's texture as I have seen it. But like Lisa I wonder how the cut will look IRL. On me, those long piecey cuts look pretty good the day I leave the salon, and then they look kind of shapeless and frumpy immediately after that. Then again, I am a dunce at styling.

Having said all that, as inspiration for a terrific stylist, I think it's a great way to go.

"No puff" is good! I'm laughing at your description, but I get it. The Winona pics are very alluring to me, too. I think it would bug me to have my ears sticking out from between the front and back, though I really like the look from the side. It's not the same as having ears exposed with sideburns--this look is like extreme sideburns to me. It's fresh looking.
It's always easy to have more cut off, if you don't like it.

It's funny, Firecracker: I hate my ears! You are so right in your description of the potential downside of this cut. Ms Winona has little petite ears, and I am not so lucky ... so for sure I wouldn't go for a carbon copy or wear it just like she does. I'm really thinking inspiration more than anything, and it is hard for me to articulate exactly what I am envisioning. Fortunately my stylist is creative and knows all about my ear-hate.

take a look at photos of Edie Campbell - she currently has some kind of rocker/short/weird/maybe-its-a-mullet haircut and something about her reminds me of you - maybe her eyes? Bangs anyways, which might be nice on you..

Love the idea of a piecey cut -- and lowlights. I think dark blonde, kind of a toffee color, is so rich and vibrant.

I think this is a great look. This is a cut I've seen on guys and I've posted some pics for inspiration. I think what Winona has is emo-inspired but totally suited to a woman in her early 40s. That's what makes it fun right, to get inspiration from a variety of sources?

ETA - I was particularly looking for different treatment around the ears, if you do not feel like showing them a la Winona.

Beth Ann, thanks for the boost and also some helpful thoughts on color. Toffee tones might be a good way to ease back to darker.
