In store: buy or no?

This is Suz's BR ruched dress, which I was seriously contemplating ordering in navy. I'd like a casual dress for work at home and easy date night (like seeing Ira Glass this weekend). It's not navy but I do love stripes and it's on sale and another half off, so about $48. What do you think?

I want to love it but I'm not sure about the ruching with the stripes and the back view seems a little bunchy (word?).

I bought it but I'm not absolutely sure. However I know I can return it so I feel okay.

At this store there was no solid, but I wi be at another BR this weekend and can see if I can try a solid. I would prefer that too.

I love the front but am meh about the back view . As Angie suggests, a solid color might take care of that. But at that price, it's good you bought it so that you think about it.

I don't know your climate but if you are going to wear this in cool weather, you might try it with tights or leggings to see if it rides up (the bane of my dress existence).

I am meh too. The stripes are problematic with the ruching, I think. Also it doesn't translate to as "nice" a dress in the more casual stripe, if that's an issue for you.
Also for me it's really short, as usual, so take that with a grain of salt.

Another vote for solid if you can find it. I think the ruching will really show up on a solid dark color and look chic, which I like, even for a casual item.

Well, I was all set to order that one, too! I'm late here I see, but I actually like it on you, Vivian. And I say, try the navy. It's worth the try. Style looks great on you.

And I know for a fact that the navy doesn't ride up with tights, at least not with my Hue tights. I wore it all day at home curled up on the couch yesterday and it was brilliant. Like PJs, seriously. The only negative was that I did notice a few cat hairs on it. (My cat is cream coloured and taupe.) But that is true of anything knit that I wear.

Thanks Suz. SO glad you have experience with the tights -- important. And that you are a bit more in favor of this dress. The rear view, ugh! I think it's just my rear, frankly, and what can I do about that? I'm going to try the navy, either in the store or online. It's so hard to find dresses that work for my shape -- you have a lot more success than I do. I have to set my standards pretty low, sadly. If it is comfortable and it fits, I am way ahead of the game.That happens maybe 1 out of every 30 dresses I try on, and it is almost always a shift. Looking good from the rear is such a luxury I never even think about it.

And not to be a sad sack, but there are very few dresses I can think of ever owning that have looked great. And never from the back. Not even the anniversary dress had a good back view. So what can I say?

Suz - I love that you have a cream and "taupe " cat - lol.

Vivian - step away from the mirror , go get a Starbucks, and regroup. Lots of us have the same experience with dresses: the only ones I can wear that seem to fit are shirt dresses, shifts and sweatshirt style dresses. I've seen these BR dresses in the store, and there is NO WAY I could or would ever wear one , as cute as they are. I don't think that style doesn't work for very many bodies.
Don't lose perspective - and as someone on this forum reminded me: it's not you, it's the clothes:)

On a (literally) brighter note, I bought a red lipstick today. Makeup always fits.

Did I show you guys the rear view of mine? I can't remember. It's not much different from yours, Vivian. We have similar body types except you have better boobs.

IMO the reason this isn't hugely flattering from the back in the photos is the ANGLE, plus the horizontal stripe. I'll bet it looks better from a different angle. Very difficult to take real looking photos of oneself from a change room.

ETA - you can't SEE when it is dark -- that is the difference here. My bum ...um...expands to the side....what can I say? It is not the rear of a 20 something. But in a dark plain it is not as noticeable. Plus the toned tights help.

Whoa Miss Viva, hold on!! I totally want to see that navy dress on you, with tights and booties. Please don't get down on yourself! Personally, I think the stripes sort of "cheapen" the look of the dress. Trust me, it's the dress, not you. I'd love to see the dark colour on you.

FWIW I have a terrible time with dresses. I pretty much stick to plain old sheaths. But size it down too much and all you see is my wide ole square butt. I have no chest and no shoulders to balance anything else. Le sigh....
