IMPORTANT: Pinning on Pinterest and Lookfab blogs

I have updated the way pinning works with the lookfab blogs and thought a brief explanation was in order.

Pinterest button: As before, if your blog is open to the public and you have enabled the Pinterest button then it will appear on your photos to make them easy for other people to pin. You can see this working on my blog with the "Pin It" button on my pictures.

Pinning without the button: Even if you DON'T enable this button, but your blog is open to the public, people can still pin your photos. They do so using the Pinterest bookmarklet.

Pinning and members only blogs: If your blog is "members only", it will not allow people to pin to Pinterest AT ALL. If they try to pin, a little message will appear saying that the page doesn't allow it. This is for two reasons. First, we are assuming that since your blog is members only you would not like the exposure on Pinterest and second, if a photo on a members only blog were to get pinned, then most people finding it on Pinterest would not be able to get back to the page because only YLF members can see it.

One implication of this is that Angie can only pin pictures from your lookfab blog if it is open to the public.

I can't pin your outfits unless your blogs are set to be viewed by all. Just making sure you know that in case you're wondering why your outfits might not be pinned

Thanks for letting us know about these important changes. I had initially set my blog to members only but I was planning to open it eventually anyway. Pin away! There's no more hiding my fashion hobby.

I've read it. Thanks for the heads up, Greg and Angie! I'm okay with my outfit photos being available on Pinterest. I'd just rather they weren't associated with my full name. So if someone did a Google search for my first and last name, all my outfit photos wouldn't show up. But if they happen to stumble on them organically, I'm okay with that too. Mostly, I'd rather someone find my professional Twitter and website first in a google search, which I know is SEO blah blah.

As of right now, I don't think any of that's a problem since I just go by my first name on here and I don't repin my own outfit photos.

Is this the reason a lot of pinned outfit pictures are gone from Angie's pinterest - because they are from the blogs open to members only?

This is sort of related, but sort of not :). Since more and more YLFers are joining Pinterest, is there a way to share that with each other? I mean, I already check out Angie's Pinterest boards, and Inge's, but I wonder if there is a way to follow everyone on Pinterest who is affiliated with YLF? (Maybe this already exists but I am too much of a newbie to realize it...) Thanks Greg!

Sveta, yes, we realized that Angie had pinned members-only photos and were worried that we had inadvertently exposed people who did not want to be out there. So we deleted those pins. I'm sure Angie will add some back in now that your blog is open.

MaryK, I considered an option for members-only bloggers to turn on the pinning, but that doesn't solve the problem of the return link from Pinterest being broken. Maybe that isn't such a big deal.

Jonesy, perhaps a profile field for Pinterest username? I still haven't finalized the profile fields so this could be done.

Greg, I don't think the return link is a big deal. It's really for the benefit of the "pin-ee," if you know what I mean, and if the owner of the original link doesn't care, c'est la vie, right?

I am keeping my blog members only. Actually, having my photos randomly linked without context or attribution was one reason I was hesitant to have a public blog to begin with. I was originally thinking of google image search, but pinterest does fall into this category as well. Now, of course I am not talking about Angie or other members pinning me (which I do actually like), since obviously they DO know the context, but more about random people seeing the photos. But, like MaryK said, if not being pinned by Angie is the price of having a members only blog then I am happy to pay it.

Diana, the thing we were concerned about is that if Angie or anyone else pins your photo, then all the people who follow them on Pinterest will see it.
