Yes, I can't wait long enough for her to post it, so she gets complete credit for this post! She mentioned the distinction between "clothing as statement vs. clothing as canvas", which really resonated with me. I've come to learn that clothing as canvas does NOT work for me at all, and that I do best with "statement minimal", or outfits composed of minimal pieces with statement impact built in. The evidence is my success with Equipment shirts, silver skinnies, and the Gidigio boots, and not so much with basic black boots, a versatile LBD, or other things that many people might consider the backbone of their wardrobe. Somehow, I just don't have the skill set to add interest to pieces that serve as a blank canvas.

This may be why I can't have a really small wardrobe, since my pieces are not the mix and match variety. I'm often attracted to the idea of those types of wardrobes (j. jill's Wearever line, or Eileen Fisher's coordinated items), but in reality, they are actually more confusing for me!

Where do you stand in this spectrum and why? Do you think it influences the size of your wardrobe with regard to clothing and accessories?
