I wanna cry - BB shirt catastrophe

So I washed my brand new Brooks Brothers shirt today to get the new stiffness/creases from packaging out and I don't know what the heck happened but there's a HUGE chocolate coloured-rust coloured stain about the size of a quarter on the front right tail of the shirt - obviously something in the laundry...everything else in the load is perfectly clean but this blob...I wanna cry! I haven't even worn it yet....

It's currently soaking in Tide Active Lift - keep your fingers crossed!

Oh no! My washer occasionally puts rust streaks on clothes, and they usually come right out in the next wash. Hope this is the case for you.

You know what stinks Makrame - I just got this new washing machine two weeks ago 'cause my old one died.

Shannon, before you do anything else, call the store and tell them what happened and that you followed the washing instructions and no other piece of laundry was affected. They might replace it. Ann Taylor once did this for me with a pair of cotton pants that shrunk significantly though I followed the directions to a T.

Otherwise, take it to a cleaners. I once got a terrible stain on a blazer. I tried to get it out, my mom tried to get it out...finally I went to a dry cleaner. He said that he should have been the first place that I went to... but he got it out.

You last option is to dye it.

I second Isabel...get this to the cleaners ASAP. They can usually remove the stain!

Thanks ladies - it's already looking better since I started soaking the stain. Once it's dry, if it still shows up, I'll take it to the cleaners tomorrow.

Well after soaking for over an hour, then running it through the laundry again, it is about 98% gone. I think I can still see it but maybe that's because I know where it is - nobody else would probably notice. Should I take it to the cleaners tomorrow and see if they can get that last little bit out or just leave it be and save my money?

I'm so sorry .... My grandma taught me to boil any stained item from laundering on a clean pot of water with eggshells but yes, take it to the cleaners. I'm really sorry....

ETA: I just saw you last post. I would wait and see how it looks when dry. Let it air dry.

I say call BB just in case. And then, for sure, take it to the cleaners if they don't offer to replace.

Zap - I'm totally interested in your Grandma's egg shell boiling water remedy. May I ask if you've ever tried it? What is the purpose of the eggshells? I love these older methods of doing things, that's why I'm asking.

My Grandmother taught me how to stretch out too tight leather shoes using a potato - aren't Grandmas the best!!!

Fingers crossed, and seconding Jeanne --- put it in the sun for a bit (unless care label has issues with that!), being the world's best free bleaching agent.

Yes, I have tried it many times and it works. The method is good to remove color bleeds from laundering accidents. I used to have a white dress with black trim that I had to air dry. The black ink would bleed into the white portion sometimes. My grandma used to fix the bleeds with this method. I think the egg shells must release some sort of substance that helps remove the stain. Grandmas are the bomb! Mine had so many tricks up her sleeve. We all are kicking ourselves because she has Alzheimers so her memory faded. We never made an effort to write down her secrets and her stories.

Shannon , is this your lavender BB shirt? If so I would not try to lift the stain any more at risk of removing the color from the blouse along with the stain, please take this to the cleaners if you want to salvage this beautiful blouse. The more you do the more the cleaner has to do to correct your attempts to remove the stain.

Some great advice but, honestly your best bet is the cleaners.

I have learned the hard way that anything I want to keep perfect and pristine goes to the cleaners...no substitute for investment purchases.

Oh yes, I would not advise boiling the BB shirt. Actually, I plan on not laundering mine. They will be dry cleaned only.

To me if it can only be dry cleaned, that's a deal breaker. I read the laundry instructions and it can definitely be put in the washing machine and dryer. In fact when I pulled it out of the dryer, which is when I noticed the stain, the shirt otherwise looked fantastic. It states on the label that if you take it out of the dryer right away and hang it up, it will never need to be ironed.

So all I ended up doing after finding the stain was soaking the shirt in cool water with some Tide Active Lift laundry detergent, which is the type I use in my washing machine anyway, then ran in through the washing machine again since I had to do a load of light coloured towels anyway, and that's it...no scrubbing, no bleach, nothing else. Then I let it air dry. So I don't think I did any damage to it but I'm going to take it to the cleaners anyway tomorrow to see if he can get the wee bit out. If not, I think it's wearable anyway as I had both hubby and DS look and they said they couldn't even see the stain (in fact I think DS thinks I'm nuts).

Oh, I'm glad it wasn't a tragedy, and hopefully it ends up 100% out, one way or another.

But how to avoid this problem in the future? :T

Is your washing machine new? I'd call the place you got it from, too - perhaps there is something wrong with it as well!

Oh Shannon, that is a pain.

Was the shirt at the bottom of load in the washing machine? I would just be careful in case you have a rogue part inside of your new machine.

Well it's looking better today but the stain is not completely gone. I'm heading out in a bit to run some errands so will be dropping it off at the cleaners. Last night my sweet hubby went all through the washing machine and the dryer and could not find a single reason for that stain - there's nothing loose. Sure...it couldn't have gotten on underwear or socks where I wouldn't care!

I hope the cleaners are able to get the last little bit of stain out. It really is worth a try. Can you just hand wash it from here on in? It's the lavender BB isn't it? It looks so lovely on you.
