How to wear popped collars with long hair?

I love how Angie and suz look with their collars popped and flared. I have also really liked having some crisp shirts with collars that stand up, but I've only been wearing them very straight up, very close tot he neck, almost like a turtleneck, because this seems to interfere with my hair the least (pics 1-2).

Is it also okay to wear the collar wide with the hair down (pic 3)? Or does the collar look like some strange, winged creature is emerging from living in my 'do?

Ha! Good question Rae. I wonder about this one also. I put my hair up in a ponytail when I want to emphasize the collar, like with PB blouses and such. I'm looking forward to the answers!

maybe the hair needs t be inside the collar, on coats at least ? jackets and shirts, that is not an option ..

Jayne's got a great idea! And Rae, you can make it work because your hair's long enough. I found that my formerly shoulder length hair was the WORST!! I kept wanting to pop my collar (I was used to it from earlier short-hair days) and with shoulder length locks it looked an utter mess. I should have known I was fated for short hair.

Hi, rae. Ya know, I never thought about the hair length issue with regard to collars. What was always in the front of my mind was more the length of the neck--a popped collar looks better with a neck that's at least not stumpy. Yours is a good length. But I can see how you'd presume there's ALGO with the collar, the neck, the hair, the this, that and the other thing all at one focal point. Would love to hear what Angie says about it. Never thought long hair could be disadvantageous under any circumstances!

I hear you Rae! I have thick shoulder length hair and no matter how much I like Suz and Angie's popped up collars (with their long necks and short hair) I can never pull if off. I tie my hair in a bun or a pony tail if I want to pop the collars.

I've tried it too Rae, and have been perplexed at how to make it work. My hair is about the same length as yours, and layered and it seems that some hair always inadvertently ends up inside the collar while rest is outside, and it bothers the heck out of me.

Rae, I only pop my collars when my hair is up. On me, it defeats the point to pop when my hair is down. Plus, my hair pushes down the popping.

Pop the points of the collar down a little more like a tuxedo collar.

I have long hair too and I've wondered about this same question. Thanks for asking! I usually end up putting my hair in a ponytail or bun when I'm starting to feel overwhelmed by my hair.

Angie, I'm not sure what you mean. I tried to leave the back of the collar up, but turn the fronts down - like a half-pop, I guess. Is this better?

Well to tell you Rae, you are really beautiful!!!.
I would put my hair in ponytail or inside the coat like my YLF frens said.
Mostly I pull all my hair to one side and then put them inside the coat, or just leave them.

I do braid my hair to the side or do a side ponytail, although I'm 15 years too old for it, especially when on vacation. I need to have my hair off my face and away from zippers, bag straps, the wind etc. I'm neurotic like that!!!
I find it tres chic.

I've found this hair-collar conflict frustrating too! I don't always love how my hair looks pulled up/back (it sounds strange, but I have a small head and I feel like pulling my hair closer around my head emphasizes that), and my hair isn't all that long, so I'm constantly fidgeting around my neck when I pop my collar. But I like how the collar looks!

I love the half pop on you Rae, but I'm sure I would find the combo of popped collar and loose hair annoying

Rae, you are very chic with your trench coat buttoned to the neck and popped collar. On the picture, I do not see a conflict with your long hair et your collar up. However, I give you another tip : put your hair back before turning up the collar, as shown on this video (woman with black mackintosh).
