HELP! Talk me out of this dress...

I don't really need a dress, especially a sleeveless one with a "sarong style skirt". but, I love this color and drapey things always look really good on me and I consider "draped" elements part of "my style". It's not very expensive, plus I'd get an employee discount...

But I have a few other things I really need that I should be saving for as "outfit completers". (OTOH, I have a gift card that would cover the price of the dress...)

I would wear this with a cream leather jacket and cream studded sandals, or with my denim jacket and grey suede platform sandals...or I could wear it in winter with a black jacket and boots. I might also wear it with my lemon yellow kitten-heel sling-back pumps.

YAY = buy the dress
NAY = it's not worth it, save your money for what you really need.

Haha Kari - too true! Jenava, this is a beautiful dress and I can imagine this color is PERFECT for you. It sounds like you've figured out how to style it for our Seattle weather, since you won't get to wear it without a topper very often. For me, that's becoming a bit of a deal breaker when it comes to dresses because I have too many sleeveless orphans that I never wear. Have you tried it on? Does it play nice with the jackets you are envisioning?

As to whether or not you should buy it...I think we should have guidelines for shopping (what holes do I need to fill, etc.) but part of the fun of shopping and fashion is finding that *perfect* piece. Is this that perfect piece that makes you willing to forgo buying some outfit completers for a while?

It is pretty, but you could probably use the gift card to go towards the things you need. Also, how much wear would you get out of it? And would it be in style long enough for you get multiple wears out of it?

Ah, and...the voices of reason have arrived!

I'm not worried about layering with it. I have several sleeveless dresses that I still wear year round. And I'm NOT just saying that because I want the dress...I have proof!

But, the point about NAS does give me pause...and there is a Jil Sander pencil skirt that I could save up for...Although it's so expensive I wouldn't dare buy it unless it were at least 40% off and it probably won't get marked down...

And my completer items are just SO BORING! (-: And I'm not desperate for anything...cropped jeans in Seattle really aren't that necessary, and I am waiting till NAS to find my neutral color booties...

I'm still on the fence.

It's beautiful and I can totally see you layering it--seems versatile. The color would look fab on you too. But...maybe you should just try it on? You might hear the angels singing in unison when you see it on, or not, and then you can be done with it!

Oh dear, that's a tough one! My first instinct was to say 'NO, go fill 'em gaps first!'... But then I remembered how hard it is to find one perfect dress...

Jenava, how many dresses do you have already? Would this be substantially different from the others in your closet? Have you tried it on to make sure it's perfect?

Also, how much leeway do you have for 'surprise'/unplanned purchases in your budget?

I am having a hard time with the idea of talking you out of this dress - it's gorgeous, it would look amazing on you, and furthermore - it's not all that expensive, imo. When I first clicked on the link, I was expecting a more expensive dress.

Sure, it might go on sale ...are you willing to wait for that? What are the chances of this thing selling out before it goes on sale (*if* it goes on sale in the near future) ?

I like this dress a lot, and it's quite reasonably priced, given that it's not even on sale yet.

If this is something you'd be very disappointed to miss out on, then this might be one of those BBQ things.

What do you think? Is it a BBQ item? Will you be let down if you wait and miss out on it?

I guess the only thing I can say is that I have waited on items that were featured in NAS, and have also noticed how those items are often offered for far less than the NAS price several weeks later, but inevitably - I end up missing out on them, so the moral of the story is that I'd have been better off to buy it right off the bat, during NAS, instead of being indecisive about things.

You know what? I think in this case, I'd just buy dress. I'm thinking there is an extremely good return policy at Nordstrom, and if by some chance it happened to get marked down during NAS and you hadn't worn it yet, or taken off the tags, then you could simply return and re-buy it or ask for a price adjustment.

Having said that, I don't think price is as much of a concern with this item, given that it's not all that expensive (at full price) to begin with.

I hate to be an enabler, but I'd just get the dress.

Not only can I not talk you out of it convincingly, I'm also eyeing it for myself. Looks like a great option for dressing up or down (I can see it as a cocktail dress but also dressed down with a jacket and boots). Such a beautiful cut. And that color, which seems particlarly nice on someone with coloring like yours and mine, is not so easy to find lately -- I wonder if it's coming back for the fall season.

Hmm. Since you might see more of this color soon, maybe that's an argument for holding out to see what's offered at the NAS? On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to try it on. (Selfishly, I'd like to know it fits!

Well, now your choices are a. Live vicariously through me or b. be dress twins with me because I just ordered it. I had a similarly colored dress in a much less fab cut this spring and I wore it to death. It was a quick death due to the cheap fabrication! I'm hoping that this fits right into the hole left by that dress. It seems so versatile w/o being boring. I like that!

Buy the dress, crop your own jeans, and wait for the sale for booties? It really is a lovely dress!
