Help me with faux fur obsession

I realize that faux fur vests have been around for quite a while, but I started really, really wanting one when I saw this from Club Monaco: http://www.shopbop.com/natasha.....785980.htm

Naturally, I didn't spot it until they were out of everything but L, and I think I would need an XS.

But it has everything I would want in such a garment.

-- not too shaggy
-- not too oversized and blocky
-- subtle,beautiful color, not a hectic pattern like tiger or zebra
-- not too, shall we say, streetwalker

Has anyone seen anything meeting those criteria that's available in S or XS?

I loved Una's capelet but am thinking that the drop-dead glamor of such a thing might limit its use for me. A vest would probably be more practical.

I'm afraid you're preaching to the converted! I adore anything furry! That's a great vest and looks modern to my eye. Sorry to be such an enabler

I have a really talented seamstress right around the corner (the kind that remakes wedding dresses and complicated things like that) but I don't know if this kind of garment could be scaled down so much.

Any thoughts from our sewists?

ETA: I just emailed photos to my seamstress to see what she thinks.

April, I think it should be possible to be taken in. I notice it doesn't say if it's lined, so I assume not, therefore the side seams should be visible. If it is lined then the lining can be unpicked a little to get inside. Hope she can do it for you.

Faux fur seems to be getting more pricey. There was a morning news feature on national TV yesterday that had two faux fur coats. There was a game of guessing which was the expensive one? It was said that quality is improving and more designers are using it recently.

That is a very streamlined one -- I would wear it, and I only wear faux fur in my dreams, really. I hope you work it out!

I loved furry vests, I had 3 during 3 years, but this year I feel that this piece is no longer on trend, we still see it on stores (much less than 2 years ago). I would think first, is it something you really love and will wear no matter what?

After years of thinking that faux fur was too "cave wear" for me, I got a little fixated on it after seeing Una's cool variations.

That particular vest looks nice. Wish I could help you out. I always thought I wanted a faux fur vest and so bought one. I've never worn it. Maybe because it looks too real and I'd hate for someone to throw ketchup on me

Seamstress says the pockets would make it impossible to scale this down as much as it would need.

@ruthe, I have a vintage 70s faux fur coat that I have the same feelings about whenever I consider wearing it. I have worn it several times and tend to get compliments so far instead of adverse reactions, but you never know. Even when I hear nice things, though, I always respond, "It's fake!"

I almost wish it looked faker... I mean, *I* know it's fake, and that it's vintage, but...it's brown, and it clearly is supposed to look sort of real. So yeah.

(I would be much more OK with ketchup than paint, though!)

Ladies: How have others responded to fake fur that isn't obviously fake in your fashion lives? Or do you make sure your fakes look fake?

I've never had any fake (or real) fur. Is that ketchup-throwing thing still really happening? When it gets bitterly cold, I see a lot of (real) fur coats in New York.

Thanks April. You know, I don't know if those things are still happening...as someone newer to the Portland, OR area and knowing how...politically-oriented a lot of people can be about certain personal choices having to do with animal products, I wasn't really sure how anyone would react.

And yes, NY in the cold is going to be *the* place for furs in the US, for all the reasons. As a former east coaster (who umm...remembers the old Flemington Furs building in New Jersey even) I probably wouldn't think twice about wearing this coat (and my even older vintage real one) there.

I would think it would be just as easy (or maybe easier) for a seamstress to make a faux fur vest from scratch. . .The zippered pockets would add to the time/expense.

I bought my faux fur vest at a thrift store a couple of years ago. Not 100% of what I wanted since it has a collar and I would prefer collarless, but close enough.

I know, Anna, and this makes me crazy. It's going to be seriously cold on the East coast for at least two more months, yet all we can buy at the end of January is bathing suits.

This is a pretty basic shape. Why not contact a local seamstress/dressmaker and see if they could make one for you? The key would be to find the right faux fur fabric, but I've seen a lot of it in the fabric stores recently since these vests have been popular.

I am no help with the vest, but it's a great piece. And I'm nodding my head in agreement, I want to purchase every warm item I see because we have at least 2 more months of cold weather in sight and the warm clothes are already moving out of stores. Boo!
