Heels that are slightly too large

After seeing MaryK's lovely turquoise patent heels I ordered a pair for myself but unfortunately they are a half size too large (and sold out in the half size down, boo). They fit my feet and do not slide off, but the back sticks out about a quarter inch (my heels always fit snugly against the back of my feet). And I am fairly sure they won't stretch beyond the size they are now as the patent is fairly stiff. I'm currently at work so I can't get any photos but if it's necessary I can do so at home.

Do you gals have any advice on how I can make these fit so the back is snug or should I just return them? *crossing fingers!*

I was going to say my BF gets these heel pads for his dress oxfords all the time. Nordstrom just handed him a few pair upon inquiring in the shoe dept. They make them for tongues as well, but obviously you don't need and can't use those!

April: Those pads look promising, though my problem is more with my toes slipping forward causing the back to gape rather than the heels slipping off.

Mo: Hm maybe I'll pop over to Nordstrom's and inquire there. I forgot they handed those out, and I need to pick up some weatherizing sprays for my leather/pony hair shoes anyway.

If you're concerned more about toe slippage, you can get little cork inserts for the toe of your shoe--those tend to help me when I'm between sizes. I'd assume Nordstrom would have those, too, since I have gotten them at a couple of different stores when buying shoes slightly too large. (Though I confess I don't buy shoes slightly too large anymore, since slightly too large generally becomes *too large*, in my experience.)

It looks like they have a product you can put on the back of your heels to give a tighter fit. This is probably what Mo is referring to.

Zapotee mentioned exactly what I was going to suggest - I was thinking of those Tip Toes and a cushioned insole as the first step to see if you can prevent your toes from sliding forward. I'd certainly try them before you return the shoe!

Foot Petals work for me, and I occasionally use the back of the heel products. I just bought some today to use in some shoes I bought at DSW yesterday.

I'm going to pipe in and suggest returning.

I used heel grips and ball of the foot pads in a pair of shoes that are half a size too big. They seem ok but still move around and I now have a significant issue with my big toe on my smaller foot- gripping the shoes with my toes has inflamed the last joint on my big toe and it is AGONY.

The physio said it happened because of too big shoes and has prescribed anti inflammatories, rest and absolutely NO heels

I'll never buy too big shoes again and am trying desperately to replace my favourite black pointy toe flats (which are the ones that are half a size too big).

At a pricey shoe store this weekend, the sales clerk told my friend you should be able to fit a pinky between the back of your foot and the shoe! That sounded nuts to me, but she insisted. So if it's not uncomfortable, you may be fine. Has anyone else heard this before?!?

I heard that pinky thing before but with a slight change- push your foot as far forward as you can in your shoe and then see if you can fit your pinky finger between your foot and shoe.

My advice is to return it! That happens to me all the time because I have small feet and I'm always tempted to buy a shoe a little big because they have no smaller numbers!
I have tried Heavenly Heelz, it works for a while, but it won't solve the problem.
Believe me.. shoes always stretch with use, no matter if they are good quality.. leather always strech!
