Weather can have such an affect on one's frame of mind, don't you think? It has been hot, hot,hot - with dangerously high UV ratings here, where I live, in southern Ontario. Regardless, I have been out of doors for most of a much needed week off work.
I am struggling with the garden 'inherited' with the new house. The size doesn't disconcert me (I am a mad gardener, and my previous garden took up most of the property - there was hardly any lawn!). It is the nature of the plantings. The plants are all sorts of disconnected colours planted like specimens and surrounded by large open areas. I like a full, romantic look with harmonious blends of colours, lush foliage and no bare earth showing.
So, I spent the week doing a big 'purge' - weeding, deadheading, pruning back overgrown specimens, and 'tossing' plants I didn't love! I've added airy Russian Sage, Lavender, and Creeping Thyme where Ornamental Goldenrod and orange poppies once dominated. I have a few HEWI's - Solomon's Seal and a good fern that can tolerate full sun (!). There is a lot of work to do, but the 'worst' is behind me.
I enjoyed the hours of quiet introspection while at work - with a resident chipmunk and pond frogs for company, and birdsong all around.
All in all, a very satisfying week!
