Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Four wedding outfit options

Will be a guest at a family wedding in Napa, CA, next weekend. Wedding at 5:30 pm in a church, reception and dinner to follow at a winery. There are four outfits I am considering. Unfortunately, all are black (one looks grey due to an underlining), but that's not by design. It just worked out that way.

I will greatly appreciate hearing which you think is the best choice, in terms of being flattering and appropriate. One of them I have worn before at a family wedding, but I do love it and it is a classic, so I throw it in for consideration. Would probably not wear it again, but if it is the overwhelming favorite, you never know. Accessories and shoes can be changed or mixed; and, of course suggestions and honest feedback are welcome. I don't show a bag with every outfit. And wraps are going to be determined after I choose a dress. Two of these dresses may very well be returned. I thank you very much for taking time to check these out. Please use any rating or comment system you like.

1. Ralph Lauren bought on sale and online. Not quite what I was expecting. Has not been ironed. Not sure I would actually wear with red. But what do you think overall?

2. White House. Black Market.
This is technically black, but it looks grey.

3. Tadashi.
Bought online and on sale at Saks several years ago. I've worn this to a family wedding; not sure I want to repeat.

4. A simple A-line style, jazzed up with a little lace. Would definitely wear it with a better bra. Might look better with a different necklace.

My fave is the White House/Black Market one. I think it looks great on you and is simple but elegant.

I think you look really pretty and young in all of them. My ranking tho would be a tie between 2 and 3 with 1 and last no. 4

They are all pretty. My order of preference is 3,1,2, and 4.

I like 1 but not sure if it is because it is not ironed that it looks a little bit too big in the waist area. Then 3, 2, 4.

I like numbers 2 and 3. Btw, your shoes look in those pics are awesome. :)

My favorite is WHBM - you look great in all of them!

All look amazing, you can't go wrong with any of them! My favorite is RL and it looks great with red. I love the neckline on it and it's very elegant.

My favorite is WHBM. I love the way you look in a more flouncy, fuller skirt. (you posted another picture recently with a similar profile.) Otherwise I like them all, but I think that the length of #1 is less flattering than the longer lengths of the other three.

I really like the Ralph Lauren dress, I'd like to see it ironed before I made a final decision. WHBM looks great on you, too!

Thank you Kyle. You look gorgeous in all the dresses! Here are my thoughts:

1. The RL dress would have been my favourite if it was longer. It has an extremely flattering bodice.
2. The Tadashi dress is KILLER and my favourite of the four. It might be nice to add your chunky pearls to that ensemble. I really like you in a black dress. This one looks a little vintage and you pull off that look well.
3. The WHBM dress comes in a close second
4. The simple A-line is my least favourite.

LOVE the new shoes!

Thanks, everyone for the feedback and comments. I don't think there is enough fabric to let down the hem on the RL -- and though you can't tell from the photo, the fabric is a casual cotton. I might consider keeping it for the office and wearing it with flats. Angie, I love the Tadashi, glad you do, too. Glad I exchanged the silver shoes for the grey...I'll wear them a lot. I will probably go with the WHBM dress for this event...and I'm now thinking I might try it with a white Zara jacket in lieu of a traditional wrap (only when we are outside). The jacket has a lot of drama and can look quite dressy. What do you think? Is this a crazy idea?

Kyle, it's hard to picture without seeing the jacket with the dress, but it seems like it might be quite overwhelming with the dress!

From what I can imagine in my head, I think it would work. I'm glad you're going with the WHBM dress, that outfit is so beautiful on you.

My preference (though belated): Tadashi, WHBM, RL, #4. They are all gorgeous though. I would absolutely wear #1 with red - gives it a lot of voom. The Zara jacket will probably look good - I almost bought that jacket myself - you might want to photograph with the dress to make sure the fabrics are compatible and one doesn't look too casual next to the other.

I love the idea of the Zara jacket over the WHBM dress. I know it well and tried it on myself. Take a pic and show us?

Your wedding outfit is coming along BEAUTIFULLY.
