Found handbag! Or, rather, found two. Need help please!

It never rains but it pours. I've been looking for a bag ever since my unfortunate mishap with the last one. Today I went to Fossil and fell in love with TWO bags -- well, four, actually, because I like two styles in two different colours (either brick red or dusty blue).

Any suggestions or comments would be very welcome. I'm inexperienced at choosing bags, but these ones tickle my fancy, with lovely colours, nice leather, big ornamental key and useless but cool-looking keyhole. The bucket bag is closer to what I used to have -- it's a crossbody style -- but I'm wondering if the satchel, which is bigger, with more pockets, might be more useful? Or will it slip off my shoulder all the time?

Based on nothing more scientific than my personal bias I vote for the Blue Bucket.

Elisabeth, for what it is worth from another relatively inexperienced bag-purchaser:

I love the shape of the bucket bag. Have always love the look of one of those. And it is great that it is cross-body. I could go for that! However, does it have any pockets at all? If it doesn't, you will want a purse organizer of some kind. Or at least I would. I once had a gorgeous Roots bucket bag that finally drove me crazy before I wore it out. Everything was ALWAYS in the bottom of that bag and next to impossible to find.

I share your worries about the satchel sliding off your shoulder. That would happen to me for sure. But others may have solutions.

Both are great looking and from the sounds of it would work really well for your style.

Shoot - the links are showing me the description but not the photo. However, based on the colour alone, I would go with the brick red. All shades of red are going to be big for fall according to Angie so this would be on trend colourwise.

Nice choices!

In my experience, the deeper and more unstructured the bag, the more rooting around you end up doing to find things. For this reason, I prefer more structure and less depth -- i.e., bag #1.

I had the same issue with the links as Shannon, but pulled them up elsewhere. I prefer the satchel by 1000% but this is such a personal thing, Elizabeth! I like the structure and shape - bucket bags seem like a black hole to me.

I prefer the satchel but I have a very strong preference aesthetically for bags that are wider than they are tall. I just find it more pleasing to look at. Personally I always carry my bags like that using the longer shoulder strap over one shoulder. The little handles are cute but kind of useless IMO - for a bag that size, it's too heavy to carry in your hand or elbow if you are going to be holding it for very long, plus I find it annoying not to be able to use my hand. I can't tell if the long strap is adjustable, but if it is you could also use it as a crossbody.

Thanks for the input! To be honest, I brought two home -- the blue bucket bag and the red satchel -- with the intention of returning one tomorrow, which is something I almost never do. That's how enormous my indecision is. I'm going to try putting my stuff in them and also ask my honey's opinion. Aaaargh.

The satchel can indeed be worn as a crossbody, but on me it's just too big for that. It makes me look like a hobbit. It looks super-cool when you hold it by the handles, though. And it's got more compartments than the bucket bag. But I've never used this sort of bag; what if the fact that it can't be worn cross-body drives me bonkers? Or should I be brave and try something new for a change?

The bucket bag looks perfect on me, proportion-wise, as a crossbody style. It has a zip pocket to put your phone and a couple of non-zip pockets for other small items. It zips up at the top. Other than that is has no compartments. It would allow me to go hands-free (important for MOTG) but is slightly smaller than the satchel and yes, everything would end up at the bottom. Not that the bottom is all that far down.

Help! need more input.

Also: Una, I love the bag you linked to (and it also has the useless but charming key!), but I have my heart set on the blue or the brick red, and it doesn't come in those colours.

Weird. Maybe it's because I'm setting up the links from a Canadian location? Anyway, the cool flap one you posted comes in two shades of brown, rusty orange, and mustard (which I do think is kind of awesome but probably won't go with anything I own).

Brick red and dusty blue, on the other hand, seem to go with everything in my wardrobe. The blue is actually nearly gray.

How else can I try loading the pages? All I normally do is cut and past the URL.

I love the red brick bag. I too am a fan of the crossbody. I also feel the colour will be more robust and long lasting and will not mark as easily as the dusty blue. Since you are not switching bags around this might be something to consider. Since both are so lovely, you won't go wrong either way. Go with the one you love the most.

I vote for the stachel, for sure! I tend to lose things in the bottom of the taller bags like the other one.

Just to put a vote in for mustard: I have found that my bright yellow bag goes with EVERYTHING. It completely shocked me. I have no yellow/brown/ etc in my wardrobe. All cool colours. True, mustard is a bit different. But you might be surprised.

Suz: I do sort of love the mustard one. I'm definitely going to try it on when I go back to the shop tomorrow, if they have it. (I didn't notice it when I was there today, but I was so focused on the red and blue Maddox bags that I didn't study everything else). I really like the flap style. I've got a lot of black, gray and denim in my wardrobe, which mustard would totally go with. the only thing is, I've got three pairs of red shoes that I wear all the time, and I don't like the idea of mustard and red accents in the same outfit.

Rae: what does FTW mean?

Angie: if I do go for the Maddox satchel, do you vote red or blue? I'm leaning toward red because I like red accents so much.

Two totally different animals. The cross body will lay more at your side than the satchel will, even using the long strap. If you carry more stuff and are in and out of your bag a lot, the satchel will be much easier to use. I like a flatter cross-body when traveling, but that's the only time I really *wear* my bag all day long. For general, everyday use, I vote for the satchel. And the red is fabulous, BTW.

My vote is also for the satchel, but a handbag is such a personal decision. There are scores of beautiful bags that I adore and yet I cannot purchase because I know they would be impractical for me to carry. Only you know what works best for your lifestyle and what will be best for you to use, and while I hate that this is true, practicality wins when we are talking about investing in a decent bag, IMO.

So I and almost everyone else loves the satchel, but if you will not feel comfortable using it then it is a waste of money. You might look smashing carrying it, but if you never choose it because it doesn't work for you, then that won't matter, either. Sorry I am not much help; I just think that you need to choose a bag that works for your personal style regardless of what the votes say.
