A review for those who may be interested:

I thought you might like to hear about Dress Assistant. I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago and have been playing with it ever since.

I’ve heard a couple of you mention things like Evernote or Stylebook, and I think Shannon mentioned Homy Fads a while back too. I tried Homy fads and although it’s great for cataloguing clothes you can’t make ‘looks’ up and that’s one of the things I really wanted to do. Dress Assistant cost me $19.95 to download the software and you can get it for Mac, Windows and iPhone. I think it’s a great way of curating your closet and once you have photographed everything you can drag and drop images of clothing items and make up combinations or ‘looks’.

Every time you upload a photo you have the opportunity of putting in notes about it and saying what season it is for. When you hover the mouse over each picture it becomes enlarged at the side so you can see clearly what it is; then, when you make up combinations you can also make notes and specify if it is for an upcoming engagement, holiday capsule etc. There is a little calendar and notes section

It takes a while to photograph everything, but once you have then it’s no trouble to add when buying new things.

There are categories for every type of clothing imaginable, including jewelry and underwear and there is scope for really big wardrobes and other family members too. I love it.

Thanks Diane! I've been getting set up in stylebook, but think having a desktop "thing", with more options, might be more useful. Esp to play with things like 333, or planning travel capsules.

Elizabeth, with stylebook, it's still only for the iPhone, right? I'm anxiously waiting for it to come on to the iPad. Until then, maybe this is the answer. Thanks for the review, Diane!

This type of approach really appeals to my analytical side, but the task of photographing all my clothes is so daunting. Glad to hear it wasn't so difficult, Diane!

I love it! I had a look at Go Chic or Go Home and it didn't appeal to me as it's part of a sort of community and I wanted something just on my home pc, not where I had to log in etc. You do need to make sure you get it backed up with your other files etc. though. As for photographing, I did it gradually and I hung each item on a plain door in good light.

I'll have to check it out. I used http://www.closetcouture.com for a while. I did my catalog of pics before moving from FL, so it was easier in a sense I guess. It did take time, though. Now I just take screenshots of what I buy since I buy most my stuff online. If not, i make sure to put a pic of me wearing it sometime later. These days, I don't play with the outfit making so much, but I do like having a visual catalog of what I have.

Thanks for the review, Diane! I have Stylebook on my iPhone, but it's not working for me. The picture editing and the way of categorizing things and navigating the categories. I've given up.

Thanks for the review, Diane. Every time Ingunn posts one of her Evernote things I tell myself I should learn how to use this software and do something similar. This one sounds quite easy and intuitive to use.

One problem I have is that I have trouble imagining proportions of things together. It is easy for me to think of good colour combinations and so on (and I don't really feel I need an application like this to help me -- I don't have a huge wardrobe and it is all visible, really, so it's just a question of looking in the closet). But what bugs me is how something that looks good in my head might not work in reality. For that, only pictures of me in the actual proposed outfit seems to help.

Kristen, I use stylebook on my iPad. It may not be FOR the pad, but it works fine. I couldn't deal with the small pics on a phone!

The photographing hasn't been bad. I do chunks every now and again, new things as I get them, sometimes can get the pics online, and if I wear things I realize I don't have, I either do them or put them on a list of things to get next time I'm in the mood.

And Suzanne, your right, nothing beats trying things on. But once you know it works, it's a fun easy way to remember the fabs and the fails.

I had the exact same thought as Suz. I would want photos on me and also agree that colour combinations aren't hard but that working out proprtions needs an actual body to work on.

Thanks for the review, Dianne! I hadn't heard of this one. I have been using Stylebook and am having a blast with it. I like that I can catalog my closet, make outfits, and keep a calendar of what I've worn. I also use it to document my own photos.

Rachy and Kristen, I use Stylebook on the iPad, which is much easier than the phone, IMHO.

For those of you who want photos of yourself, this is what I did on Stylebook (see photo #4). I use it to document my WIW's. I changed the name in one of the "inspiration" categories, labeled it "my style", and then added my own outfits. They are all in one place and it makes it so easy to scroll through them.

Here are a few screen shots. It's a work in progress and I'm still learning how to use it.

Photo #1: an example from my closet: blazers
Photo #2 -3: examples of looks I created (day and evening)
Photo #4: the category I created for my WIW's
Photo #5: the calendar (when I remember to add outfits!)

For Firecracker Suz and other who mention photos of yourself; I would think so, why not? After all the computor doesn't know whether it's a pic of your or a sweater. I don't see why you couldn't uplode a photo of yourself in an outfit and then you could drag it across to the side where you place the combos. You can only upload photos into the section for clothes but I'm guessing that once you hve done that and dragged it across you could then delete it from the list side and just keep it in with the combination. I'll try it and get back to this thread later; watch this space.

Ok, I've had more of a play and found a bit more out for outfits.
As I don't have an iPhone or iPad I went for something on the PC and as thats where I store all my WIW's and this thought never came up. Granted if you are playing with combos without trying them on then I understand it may not work IRL. So.. with that in mind .. :
I uploaded a photo of me in an outfit onto the Dress Assistant then I moved it across to the combo.
The only way to delete a pic is by enlarging it with a double click from the main list and clicking the delete button... however this then deletes it from the combination as well, so it goes completely. I had a thought though... and as I'm not bothered about cataloguing sports gear then I could store all my pics of me in outfits in the sportswear section and that way I can play dress-up and keep the pics in the app. I hope this is of some help with clarifying things. Obviously if I had an iPad then Stylebook sounds brill too. I'm a PC gal at heart.

Diane this looks good. I will check it out. I currently use Stylebook on both my phone and iPad but have gotten lazy and really need to update.

I just checked and this app is available for the iPad for AUD 10.49,

Yes I rather like it. IMO its a pretty good app for PC as I checked out other ideas and this seemed the best. I'm a bit behind the times as I haven't got an iPhone or iPad (maybe for Christmas?) Now I have found a way round putting pics of me on then I think I have it covered. Stylebook does look pretty good though.

Diane, that was my thinking too! You're right, the computer doesn't know the difference between a photo of a clothing item and a photo of oneself. So glad you are able to add your own pics to it. I did the same thing, just took a category that I wasn't using and relabeled it for my own.

Yours sounds like a wonderful option for PC users. My YLF photo file was on my PC, but I found I wasn't accessing it as frequently since I started using the iPad more and more. Now I'm able to access my photos from both places. Aren't these apps fun?!! A little labor intensive at first, but oh so much fun once you get the hang of it.

I would love to hear more about it as you delve into it. I bet we could find many more similarities between the different apps. Did you find you were able to identify wardrobe holes by documenting your closet?
