Fall shopping: Fear the mirror

Actually, I should say I fear the camera. I picked up a few things for fall and am dragging my feet about trying them on at home and snapping a picture. Does anyone else feel this way. It's so disappointing to find that things don't look the same at home as they do in the store. What did I purchase, you ask? Grey skinnies, a pair of BF jeans, and a burgundy cropped moto.

I find the only real way to see if something works is to photo it. Not all of them make a post. I know there are trick mirrors at stores and just figure it's not ME, it's them.

Well I drag my feet to photograph those things too, but mostly because I am lazy I have learned not to get too attached to The Way Things Look At The Store, though I certainly empathize. Take the photos! If you don't like 'em, don't post 'em up here. You've got a great eye, Kelly.

I agree. That's why I'm dragging my feet. I hate returning. I guess I'd better get a move on before my receipt expires

I find I am not trying on as many thing at the stores. I purchase, try them on at home, then decide how they fit on me and into my wardrobe. I may have to return more often but I am not buying what really does not work

Oh you are definitely not alone Kelly! I'm actually finding that's one positive factor of ordering from Nordstrom, or anyone else on line for that matter. My first try on is at home in front of my own mirror and I find I'm much more logical and non emotional in assessing the item that way. I haven't gotten caught up in a SA's excitement or pushy sales tactics. It's just me and my mirror.

Take your time to photograph and post - it's not a race

I know how you feel, Kelly. I wish I could just figure these things out on my own, but I'm just not that confident yet, although I'm kind of proud of myself that I went out and bought some BF jeans and ripped the tags off without even a post! But that is a rare occurrence, that's for sure. Can't wait to see your haul!

I have been doing almost all of my purchasing online. My DD makes it hard to get to the stores.

Still, remember it is not you, it is THEM. They use the trick mirrors and enhanced lighting instead of giving you an honest look.

I totally relate! Store mirrors are questionable at the very least. At one of my local stores, the SA always encourages customers to look in the mirror outside of the change rooms. I always look way slimmer in this mirror than the dressing room mirror... very naughy I say... but I know not to base a decision on the reflection in the skinny mirror! Lol. Photos are most defintely worth doing and I bet your new items are going to look fab on you.

I totally relate also! I'm especially hesitant when I really like something in the store, to then take a look at the pic. Sometimes the pic looks so different (and not in a good way!) On the flip side, sometimes I think the picture looks better than I imagined. Just goes to show that I need the photo to be objective.

Thanks for the pep talk, Peeps! I appreciate it. I'm going to brave the pictures in the next day or so. I will keep you posted I'm going to bite the bullet--photos do not lie and I may just have to suck it up and make a return trip to the mall!

I can relate as I am so disappointed many a time to try something on at home...BUT, sometimes the reason is not the mirror but what I combine it with. Like slouchy pants. They looked good enough in the store with the blouse I was wearing that day. But I wanted them for a jacket and when i tried them at home, with the jacket, oh no...disaster. Go ahead, try and style and make the right decision!

I also feel the same sometimes. I go home regret my purchase and alas there's no return policy in some shops here in our country and they become closet orphans till my sister sees them.....

Fashionista, no returns, that is hard! I've made it an inviolable rule not to buy things final sale, I just make too many mistakes that way. (I do make an exception for thrifting though.)
