Fall and Winter Wardrobe Planning

So many Forum members are planning for the upcoming seasons. I just can't get my mind around winter clothes when the heat index is over a hundred degrees and the humidity is crazy awful. The only thing I can do at this stage is decide what pieces aren't worth carrying over to next year.

I am hoping that sleeveless tops and other summer tops will go on deep discount though.

Ha -- yes, I am in a hotter climate too. We've had a cooler week thanks to a bunch of rain though, and I find I am more ready to think about Fall clothing. (And thanks to NAS I already have better Fall items than I ever find most years, since I typically start looking in October/November when it actually starts to cool here.)

I love sleeveless tops too: they are great for Fall/Winter layering in my climate (and sleeves are a perennial fit problem for me --- good riddance!) so that is kind of like shopping for Fall ... at least in my world. Maybe look for Fall colors that would play well with toppers?

Great idea, RWS. I am planning on wearing all of my sleeveless tops into the next season. Do you think it matters that some of the colors say spring? I have lots of gorgeous light pinks and baby blues that I want to transition.

I live in a very hot climate, but am excited for the fall. I have already started a little bit of planning and trying-on of fall stuff, es evidenced by my recent culotte lab post, I just crank the AC super high.

Traditionally, August and early September are months when the retailers try to get rid of leftover summer merchandise, so there should be lots of stuff on deep sale. The only issue is finding something you like, so good luck with that!

I agree, Tanya. I might not find anything I like. Buying for my dominant season is new to me. So in a way I am actually excited at the prospect of shopping the sales to see what styles/silhouettes speak to me. I will consider it a research project and less of a buying project.

I'm in the desert, but I can't wait for fall! I'm also trying to really be smart with my purchases and find pieces that will work for both summer and fall ( like summer items such as sleeveless tops in fall colors which can be layered over. Fall colors are my preference anyway, but I think that AJ mentioned this tip somewhere and I thought it was brilliant). I'm considering the sundress below because I loved the print so much. I could wear it now, and see layering it into fall wearing it like a skirt.

I'm also snapping up more cold weather items as I come across them since it's supposed to be a cold winter and almost nothing from last year fits.

Like you, Sterling, I have not been able to wrap my mind around shopping for Fall/Winter clothing. We also just had two or three weeks where the heat index was above 100 degrees. Sticky and awful! There will be no Fall clothing "try on" sessions or closet evaluations for me until temps are a lot cooler. I agree with Runs With Scissors that sleeveless tops can be worn all seasons for a lot of us, so they are a smart purchase. I wear them under cardigans and jackets in the cooler seasons. I run warm and sometimes need sleeveless tops in overly heated office environments. Hope you find some good sales.

It's still sticky even where I live, but I've come around to the idea of advance planning thanks to Angie, YLF, and the NAS. However, I think your form of advance planning is much more relevant to your climate! Shopping the sales and even the designer clearances for summer pieces now will be a great way to go -- you may find super transitional items that will take you into fall, and/ or you may find something special for next summer.

Since your winter is short, perhaps thinking of a capsule will be enough -- just looking over what you need to replace/ upgrade for at work and at home.

Sounds like you're getting a head start on discarding what won't work, which should help identify potential gaps. I agree, it's hard to think fall when the heat outside is oppressive.

I was playing in my closet the other day and realized that after spending all summer in skirts and bright colored tops, I'm now finding my good old stand-by dark solid-colored dresses beyond boring. I'm not sure what that means for fall wardrobe planning just yet.

I also cannot think about winter clothes just yet. I am still reviewing my summer clothes - what I did not wear, what I was not happy about, what is worn and need replacement and what I wish I had. I am also stalking some summer items that I want to buy on sale for the next season, for example silver Paul Green Cayannes

Your focus is much more rationale, Sterling. But I have a strong emotional connection to the anticipation of fall - I absolutely cannot push back the excitement of the coming crisp weather even if it is 85 F and humid out!!! As a child I was ready to buy my school supplies on August 1. A bit nerdy, I guess. I love summer, but a small dose is fine, then I am on to Autumn even if it is only transitioning in my head.

This is an excellent way to make use of your wardrobe time to see what carries over. I just noticed a sleeveless navy silk top on a J. Crew email and it made me think about my sleeveless top and how I can transition that into the autumn with my tan/camel slacks and some animal-print shoes.

I also am dragging my heels with fall planning although like viva I love fall and fall clothing so much more than summer. I think it is the fact that that I will need several new pants due to weight gain and I hate shopping for pants- so I am avoiding it all.
So, off to try on fall pants and see if anything fits. Maybe it isn't as bad as I anticipate.

These late sales are a great way to add trending pieces for looks that may not yet have made it to your area and everyone will be wanting next summer. Be sure that they are trends that you would like to participate in. No one in my area was buying asymmetrical dresses when they first came out but I snapped up a couple on sale. Same with warmer weather booties.

Same for me. Not only because it is still warm here, but mainly because I hate Autumn and Winter and therefore I hate shopping for those seasons. The usual situation is that in the middle of Winter I realize I have not the right pair of booties, or that I have a tragic lack of warm pullovers .... But it seems I cannot change my habits. Oh, buying for cold weather is so boring for me! Shopping for Spring and Summer is much more fun.

Just posting to say thank you Sterling for motivating me to try on all my fall pants. I found a few that still fit and a couple of old pairs that I will need to taper down the legs. The old pairs are from about 10 years ago in the era of wider boot cut pants!.Not sure why I keep these but I am grateful now. So now on to reviewing my tops and I can move forward with fall planning also. Thanks again.

I usually prefer dressing for winter! My favorite clothes are of the cool weather variety: fitted sweaters and cardigans, peacoats, trench coats, etc. It's much more difficult for me to look good in lightweight summer clothes - I love sun dresses, but I always end up looking frumpy in them.

Pendleton can be hit or miss, but I've found some beautiful cashmere sweaters there.

It is hard to think about winter also esically when the teps say 90s. Ugh. Hate it. My favorite time is the fall and winter. I have to purchase now because if I don't it will be nothing left in my size.

Normally I don't begin to think about fall and winter until October. The last few days there has been sort of a fall haze in the air, brought about by a brush fire a few miles south of us. It's nothing like the big fire in San Bernardino county, but this is the third day of smokey air. So I got into my closet and found the things I bought at NAS and took off the tags and ironed one top which I am wearing. Maybe I'll do another one this weekend.

I like fall and winter clothes the best, although I don't like cold weather. I have opened my sweater drawers a couple of times this week, just to remind me what I have so I don't duplicate. I've already bought too many new things this year--I don't need more.

Elevbess reminds me that I really should get out to visit the Pendleton store before too many weeks pass.
