Experimenting with tunics - YouLookFab Forum

Hi again ladies!

White House Black Market is having a sale now and I need some feedback on several tunics I've tried. I'm a tunic newbie and it's my first time experimenting.

This first one has a very cute pattern, but the bottom part? I think I'm attracted to it because I really like how the top half fits me. This is size XS. Is there any way it can work if I go up a size?

This second one is plain black, similar stretchy material, not particularly clingy or skimming (poly/spandex). I feel less comfortable in it because there's no pattern to hide behind (does this make sense?) It was fun experimenting with this necklace and belt , but I'm not sure it's something I'd actually wear in real life.

Also, what do you think about belt placement? I'm a pear with a short torso, this is one area I'm always wondering about. If this orange belt is too heavy, I also have a more delicate white belt.

Hi Lena....

I think the pattern placement on the first one makes the bottom half look much wider than it really is. Considering you're a pretty pear, I'd try to avoid that.

I like the neckline of the second one.

I am a terrible judge of belts--I'll leave that one to the experts, but I like the color combo!

Lena, I agree with Nicole that, unfortunately, the first one doesn't flatter your hips. I think you can find something that looks much better on you!

The second top is better, but I'm wondering if maybe it's hitting you at a bad spot? Maybe a little longer would look better? I'm not sure the belt is working...maybe the belt is too loose and therefore making you look more pear shaped than you actually are, but something isn't working with that belt. What does it look like if you put the belt at your natural waist? I might try the more delicate white belt just to see. Belts, I find, are a trial and error type of thing.

I agree that the b/w patterned top is not as flattering, but I really like the black top on you. the necklace is perfect with the neckline and the colors are beautiful. I am still trying to figure out belting so can't really comment on it, but the red accent from the belt looks good, just play with the positioning.

Lena, it's such a treat to get a *little* peek at you. You're beautiful! I agree that the b&w tunic seems to give more width to the hips than you want. The black one is better, but it still seems to make you look a little hippy, IMO. Are the jeans underneath a bit loose or bulky? Maybe that's contributing to the overall impression. I love the color combo you put together with the black tunic. I was actually thinking maybe a wider belt would be something to try.

The first one would have been great if it didn’t have a horizontal border on the hem and distracting side vents.

Second one looks super. I’d leave off the belt. Lovely necklace.

You might like to try tunics that are a wee bit longer – perhaps 2-3 inches longer. Your eye might fall into place a lot easier that way.

I actually really like the patterned tunic, maybe with a skinny jean or darker pant. The black one is lovely, I am not sure it needs a belt, maybe a statement necklace instead. The orange is a great color to use as accent. The belt appears to thin for the weight of all that black. I love the tunics on you!

Becky, good point about the jeans. The white ones are not particularly tight, they tend to stretch out during the day.

Angie, I'll definitely be trying longer tunics and sweater dresses in the future. I'm excited about this new look.

The first one looks amazing on you. If it is not perfect, at least you are heading in the right direction. My first response when I saw your picture was WOW, you are a tunic gal.

i actually really like the first one, so im a little disappointed it wasn't a hit with everyone else.

even though you are a pear shape, i don't think that always means you have to hide your hips. sometimes, you might as well embrace them. honestly though, i didn't even really notice right away that you were pear-shaped til i read your post, if that helps at all.

anyway, sad to hear it didn't work out this time, but you have a stylish eye, it seems, so i'm sure you'll find something even better.

The first tunic is beautiful. I can’t see past that horizontal border though. If it was without, it would have been a perfectly pretty A-line silhouette - to your point.

Interestingly (a spanner?), all I could see was the vertical detailing at the bodice area, and tiny delicate shoulders. My eye was drawn up, not down. I didn't even notice the horizontal border!

And the side darts for me meant that in the side view, her back curved in a bit to define her waist and show off her nice curves.

I often wish I had more of a pear shape myself, and personally think the pear is the most ideal female form.

(And a very pretty female form. That's why we call the pear a "pretty pear". Lena has delicioulsy dainty, pretty shoulders).

I will keep looking for tunics and will definitely pay attention to horizontal and vertical detailing. I was always attracted to this shape, but didn't know how to wear it before YLF.
