I, too, tried on a trench and brought it home so you could see.

It is London Fog. Size small regular. Here I am wearing a long sleeved T of substantial weight, a light sweater, and a spring weight jacket underneath it.

Pro: I love the classic style for me. It is waterproof! The fit feels good. (Does it look okay?) The cost is extremely reasonable for a coat of this quality.

Con: It is black and I have been trying to avoid black. It does not have a liner. But this is not a deal breaker for me because I have warm coats and I can easily layer under it.

It is very hard to get true colours here. The outdoor pics got too exposed and I tried to adjust but it's not perfect. The black does have a slight inky cast to it, blue black rather than brown black, if that makes sense.

Hubby likes the style and thinks the colour is "not bad. Could be worse."

Max (kitty) likes the hemline.

Daughter says, "It's not bad." (Now THERE's 12 year old enthusiasm for you!)

Please keep in mind that I have had a 3 day migraine as these photos were taken so I am definitely not at my perkiest. And my hair is in dreadful need of doing. So better health and a new haircut/colour might help the overall impression.

Sveta says there is a similar coat in raspberry available. It is not available in my city. I am going to try it in Toronto if I can find it on the weekend.

and ETA: There is something very timeless yet avant garde about a black trench, IMO. I think it is a great item to have.

I think it looks great! Raspberry would be great if you could find it. I know how hard it is to avoid black! But, the black does look good on you, too. (and you definitely don't look like you haven't been feeling good!--you look fab)

ETA: Just noticed you have your hands tucked into the pockets in all pics. How is the sleeve length?

It is a good, classic style and nice fit! Black is not a bad color on you, so maybe you can jazz it up in other ways (hat, scarf, umbrella?) for your trip. And since it is not too spendy, maybe you can keep your eyes peeled for a colored one as a long-term project.

Ok now I am impressed! This black looks VERY good on you! The style is just killing me it's so fab on you!!! I love all of the trench-y details, the epaulets, the collar and the belt. The length looks perfect on you, too! And a dark color will be warmer if the sun is out. The black definitely has a cool, mysterious spy-vibe that the rasberry one wouldn't have. But you might like what the rasberry does for your coloring better. I'm surprising myself by how *much* I like this on you! I vote to keep this one until you've seen and posted pics of the rasberry one.

ETA: Is that a new cross-body bag?

Thanks, all! The sleeve length is perfect. I chuckled when you mentioned the hands-in-pockets thing. I tend to do that when I feel comfy in a coat. Maybe that is telling me something.

But I do have some neat red gloves that would look good with it. And a fun red and white cherry print umbrella.

Claire, that's my old regular bag. Just the usual. I don't know if my new yellow one would look ridiculous with this. Thoughts? Black is sort of dull with the coat.

I will look for the raspberry and try to get pics of that one for comparison.

And as Rae says, I can always play with scarves. I had a teal one on in the store when I tried on.

I think it is, Jem, but I'm not 100% sure. There are a bunch of London Fog coats that appear quite similar until you actually see them (and see the fabric.) This one SAYS it has a different fabric blend than the one in the pic, which in turn says something different from the one London Fog has on their web site. So it's a bit difficult to say.

I also meant to mention, I was really glad I did not spring on the soft shell coat yesterday. I tried on a soft shell London Fog coat and was horrified! Maybe the North Face one would have been better, but the LF one stuck to all my other clothes like GLUE. The fleece lining was a static trap of major proportions and I felt overheated the second I put it on.

Wow this trench looks superb on you. Great fit, classic style and it may be black, but be honest black is very useful to have in a coat and will not date itself by color alone.

Ok, did I tell you I really, really REALLY love this on you? Something about your *old* cross body criss-crossing all the the butttons and the belt is uber-cool. New coat juxtaposed against the old cross body. I likey. And you must always pop your collars. For the rest of your life.

great trench, I have had little luck with softshells. FWIW I prefer a down sweater under a hardshell for serious weather (my down is Eddie Bauer and shell is Patagonia)

I have a friend who owns a soft shell and she seems to love it, but I don't think the fleece is exposed as it was in the one I tried on.

For gear wear, sporty-weekend stuff I have a goretex EB jacket and a down vest that I sometimes use. But I wanted a regular coat for city wear, too.

Suz, you are my hero for shopping and smiling and posting (including supporting others!) through a 3-day migraine.

And this trench is perfection on you! If you're really hankering for colour, though (and I can relate when you've had quite enough with the non-colours and *did* OD on neutrals too recently), wait and try the raspberry. If it's as sharp as this one, you'll be a heart attack on heels!

I'm so sorry you've been suffering with a migraine Suz - I've had them my whole life so completely sympathize. I hope it leaves you soon!

Now onto the trench - YOWZA!!! The fit and style of this is fantastic on you. It is so beyond chic I can't stand it. I know you've been wanting to get away from black but this is classic and will NEVER go out of style.
