I remember plastic pumps. I remember frat boys drinking beer out of my red plastic pumps, then having to walk home with sticky feet.
I graduated high school in 1983. You'll love this anecdote: in 6th grade I dressed in bell bottom jeans. In 7th grade, suddenly bell bottom jeans were "out." My mom refused to buy me new jeans until I grew out of my bell bottoms. That is when I learned to sew!! I tailored all my disco jeans into skinnies.
For most of high school, however, I dressed preppy. Right out of the Preppy Handbook, button down shirt with sweater tied around my neck and docksiders... except maybe for the blue eyeshadow and Farrah Fawcett wings. Oddly enough, most of my friends were punks, purple hair, leather jackets, stud collars.
College I got a poodle perm, then later I ended up with a flock of seagulls haircut or maybe it was more like a Pat Benatar cut - some spiky thing, really short, ears cut out - total disaster.
I think I was a fashion disaster in college. I do remember sewing up a neon mini-dress and wearing it with a wide white hip belt. That was my going out outfit.
Ack, and I remember shoulder pads. Huge ones.
And stirrup pants. I refuse to wear tights (except with boots).
I went to my 20th college reunion awhile back, and was voted "most improved." I was told over and over I looked so classy. The funny part was I kept getting asked if I'd had breast implants (NO). The reason? Because I'd learned how to dress to show off my figure. Back then, there was no such thing as petite clothing, the styles were all about volume, and clothes were always humungous on me, and hid my figure.
Have a great time at your concert!!!!
