My 1980s outfit, and debut of my new 80s metal haircut (Claire, AJ and I were talking about our influences this past weekend and, as the 80s are one of my biggest and favorite influences, it made me realize this was just the hair change I've been looking for!). It's still blown out big from my stylist, you know how they like to do with curly hair. You can't see them but I'm wearing some fun doorknocker earrings; both the earrings and these slouchy pleated trousers were picked up in LA this past weekend. After looking at the photos I realized my outfit really needed some long chain necklaces, so I've added a few but couldn't reshoot because I've got to get to work! Will check the other submissions when I get there ^^

oh Aida- that is a scream! you just made my day. Everyone's outfits look like so much fun. Great interpretations.

I"m really ticked because I tripped on a rock on my run this morning and am laid up with what I hope is only a bad sprain... so it's loungewear for me today. I won't horrify you with a shot of my "Blanche Devereaux" silky robe... hehe
Hmm, I'll have to enjoy me some 80's movies via Netflix today while I enjoy the YLF fashion show!

This is my loosely inspired 80's look, combining elements that were part of the fashion of the era into a look that still feels like me:
Denim jacket with strong shoulders, animal print blouse (although a pussycat bow style), black above-the-knee skirt (not quite a mini), black tights, flat black riding boots with buckles (a little more rugged than my norm) with black boot cuffs (not leg warmers, but inspired by them).
And because it's me, I added pearl stud earrings just for kicks!

Aida! Aida! You are an 80s ROCK star!!!!

That is one amazing outfit. Right down to the flamingo. It IS a flamingo, right? Too perfect for words.

Kari, love the way you've taken elements from the era and made them work for you!

Ohh Suz... you know how everyone has the fantasy life they shop for? Mine is 100% 80s rock star -_-

(For anyone that's wondering, I did not actually wear the above outfit. Hoping to post my real outfit shortly ^^)

EDIT: 80s inspired things are dangerous for me; with the level of drama in the clothing from that decade, it's so easy to veer into costume territory if I don't think about what I'm pairing those items with! All the pieces I'm wearing in the above outfit are in my closet, except the salmon blazer which is in my sentimental clothing pile (and is a genuine 80s item). When I put that outfit together in my head it looked so obviously 80s over the top... until I saw it in the mirror and thought "hmm that's actually not too bad.....". I am going to have to be very mindful of what I pair those new pants with

Chin-chin, I raise a toast to all of you wonderful, creative and funny creatures.

I am not on the floor, well - not any more.... I've relived my youth thanks to you and this time it was fun all the way! I did shed a few tears, while laughing

@tracina, THE trousers! A+

@Deborah, Color blocking. Ace.

@Suz, the silhouette. The eyeshadow too! Top marks.

@MaryK, you CANNOT be serious about suit and sneakers! High-five for almost twinning my Tess McGill today Plus, you get a special gold star for that princess Diana ring.

@bella, the blazer and the boots... yeah, been there, done that. You rock.

@Kate, every clever, thought-through element... and then that chain low on the hips. Smashin'!

@Jonesy, you get the highest grade for taking part, then another one for the effort of 3 outfits and then some more for each individual outfit. You graduate this 80s look with the highest honors, well done!

@Aida!! If this is not genuine blazer from the Miami Vice set, I'll eat my own shoes.

@Kari, you just can't not look like a lady, can you! Just delicious.

Oh, btw... remember the terrible perms? The highlights back then? The dark lipliner and the light lipstick? Those funny banana-shaped hairclips? Seriously, how did we manage to survive the fashion jungle of the 80s?

Terrible perms. I had one. You don't know HOW terrible a terrible perm really can be until you do it with short hair.

Thank goodness, after that I sort of punked my hair up instead. Liked that a lot better.

Thanks again, everyone, for being such great spirits, and Bella, for spurring us along.

I didn't need a terrible perm. My real hair already looks like a terrible perm!

OK Here is my REAL 1980s inspired outfit As I've said before, this is my all time favorite decade (tied with the 1940s) and I usually have to be careful that I don't infuse TOO much 80s into my outfits at once. So for today, I decided to keep it simple and let my new sharp shouldered red blazer be the highlight of my outfit (purchased this past weekend in LA, and OMG I am so super excited about it!!!). I have always always been drawn to the punk/metal stylings from the 70s/80s (hence all the black), which I think comes across in my overall style and if not I'm working to put it there heh. Also sporting my new doorknocker earrings (those bad boys are HEAVY), slightly-over-the-top costume pearl necklace, a plastic headband, and bright red lipstick. How I <3 the 80s ^^

(Ornella, that is indeed a genuine 1980s blazer! Salmon color, oversized length and all )

Awesome Aida!

And thank goodness, my shoes probably are not that tasty

I too find it interesting that this decade didn't garner more outfits. Too theatrical perhaps? I can see how living through the decade may deter; I specifically didn't vote for the 90s because, well.. that was my teenage decade and I didn't want to do that again. But of course, this time around one could always try a style other than what they did in that time!

Tracina, I really like those trousers! I hope you wear those often

Ornella, so cute! Love the back seam hose. I thought about doing the white sneaker thing too.. but I don't have any! I love that you did that outfit ^^

Deborah, I adore that color combination. Look at you in all that color!! I didn't even know you had those jeans, let's see more outfits with those (please!) Really like the white shoes and watch with this outfit, very springy.

Suz, the 80s gal in me just can't get enough of that dress though it is very 80s looking The earrings however, you need to wear those more often! So awesome.

Mary, outfit #1 is so Rainbow Bright I really like your second outfit, and who says your outfit has to be The Real Deal! We're going for inspiration here Love you in that cobalt.

Bella, ok so those jeans with those boots are just amazing together!! I can see the 80s nod, but you are right that your style is fully anchored in the modern world.

MamaKate, great colors! I completely associate that fuchsia color (the bright one in your shoes) with the 80s. Love those vintage silk trousers.

Jonesy, oh my goodness! I don't even have words ^^ The ladybug overalls!!!! (OK I kind of really love #1 though....)

Kari, I love that both your 70s and 80s interpretations draw on glam elements. I think this is how you are able to really make these outfits "you". I ADORE you in this 80s outfit (though it does seem rather darker than what I'm used to seeing you in). Those boots pair amazingly well with the black pencil skirt!

Aida! While I adore the new red jacket (and everything about that look), the first one is so Miami Vice-tastic!! The hair (wig or wiglet?), the shoulder pads in the jacket (if I'm not mistaken?), the whole darn vibe!

i just have to say this was such a fun read to start the weekend...what great creativity you all have!

Finally! I've been antsy all day to get home and do the 80s! Sadly I ran out of time and couldn't do more. But I swear I could compose at least ten different 80s looks with things from my closet - without having to resort to the "costume box".

1) This is a pretty typical outfit from my 80s. I ran with the New Wave crowd (think Billy Idol, Cure, Depeche Mode). Of course, at the time my "jewelry" would have more likely been oversized safety pins, and my tights were intentionally ripped and everything would have come from the flea market. Oh, and my hair was MUCH higher and died platinum blond.

2) An actual photo of me in the 80s! One of my favorites outfits EVER.

3) This is how I'm going out for dinner. Just a small nod to the 80s. My new pants (Zara) feel very 80s to me, and of course I wore tons of black black black. Forgot to include the studded black bag in the picture, which definitely adds.

Antje, YES!!!! What a great photo of you!! Thanks so much for posting that! Loved your first look, too. It did recall the era.

And Aida, your second look is gorgeous, but I am still trying to figure out how you got your hair back to normal proportions so fast!

Loving everyone's 80's interpretations! I was home with the kiddies today so I didn't have a chance to pull out my Alexis Carrington shoulder pads, neon and gold chains. Here's the best I could do today - an actual photo of me from the 80's.

Rita!!!!! Oh. My. GOD.

Just fantastic.

wow, I'm amazed at the crreativity here. Suz, I love the vintage dress. Jonesy, your looks totally took me back in time!
I struggled with this challenge. I was clueless in the '80s! My memories of the the decade were punk, Madonna, bling, big shoulders and bright colours.
This outfit was a "just for fun" attempt to combine a few of those inspirations, but I don't think it really represents the decade.

Too bad it wasn't sunny today in Seattle...I was all set to wear my Raybans!

I biked to work this morning, but I did manage to snap a pic in the bathroom of the bar my bosses and I went to to celebrate a long week and a successful presentation to upper management! Yes, I still "dressed the decade" despite my presentation...that's how dedicated I am!

I'm wearing a distressed light blue denim jacket, a mushroom-colored lace top, black skinnies and black leather ballet flats with silver nailhead studs (sorry for the picture quality). My concession to the presentation was that I originally wanted to wear patent leather stilettos with this, but I had to stand for 2 hours, so opted for flats.

Oh, and, ETA Madonna inspiration pic

My favs are Suz (dude, I would totally wear that dress in a heartbeat!), Aida - soooo jealous of the jacket!, Sharon - OMG, that skirt is killer...and Antje - love you in a mini skirt!

I think Suz has a dress on donation pile, it might need some repair work. Check here.

I can totally see you in it.

Ornella, your runners with office wear is so fab! Spot on looks, and I will have to bone up on the movies you referred to as I don't know who Iceman is!

Jenava, even your facial expression is a bit Molly Ringwald!

Sharon, this is a great 80s inspiration outfit! I took the challenge to be about inspiration, not necessarily about duping 80s looks, and this has plenty. In fact, what's tricky about "dress the 80s" is there's been so much 80s retroism the last few years, that it just looks normal to us.

Modgrl, you're adorable. ^_^

Antje, I'm wowed not just by your tartan tights but the whole look! And you looked awesome then too.

Aida I'm loving both outfits but the salmon jacket really suits you!

Kari, I love that you made it like you! As I said to Sharon, that's how I interpreted the challenge anyway. Love you in leopard print (or is it some other animal?).

Deborah, you look great in those cobalt skinnies! Great outfit, even if not what you envisaged.

Tracina, I can understand not wanting to go back there. That's a pretty blouse - do you wear it untucked?

Suz, I told you on your other thread how much I love this dress on you! Can you save it for your daughter perhaps, if you won't wear it?

Bella, this is a beautiful 80s inspired outfit. Nothing to excuse yourself for here!

MamaKate, what a fab top! And a very authentic MOTG look; I think I saw mums wearing something like this when I was at school!

MaryK, your Princess Diana ring is my fave, though I do love those fluoro pumps!

Jonesy your ladybird overalls are just gorgeous and your hair is awesome.

Thanks so much ladies, it was a treat!

I found this decade the hardest by far - I was in primary school, and completely oblivious to (even bad) fashion.

I started commenting on inidvidual outfits but my post got 'eaten' so I'll just sum up by saying that Aida's hair in her initial post is the best thing I've EVER seen, closely followed by Rita's actual 80s hair and outfit. Oh and Antje's tights.

So here's my attempt. I'm standing on my bed - not because it was a popular 1980s pastime - but to get the boots against a light background. Taking pics in the mirror stinks. I must master the timer!

Perfect - and wearable - dress, Glam!

What I remember most from 80s is leggings and tight miniskirts. I never wore any of them as I was too conscious of my heavy bottom but my younger sister did. This was often topped with a wide and long top. And big hair - never had it either. I guess I was very old-fashioned during 80s!
My outfit was not exactly 80s reproduction but just using some elements: leggings and my shortest dress instead of mini-skirt - not mini and not tight but this is what I have. I tried to add a loose sweater on top as well - just for the picture though.
That was the most challenging one for me as I don't even have anything remotely "80s"...oh well, at least I have tried!

Wow, some amazing looks to catch up on here! Sveta, you look terrific!!!! Wonderful outfits, and I do think they echo the 80s. I had a pair of shoes very much like those red ones back then. By the way, I was just like you back then, trying to disguise my bum and feeling left out of all fashion fun. Could not wear a mini with my short heavy legs, either.

Glam, you ARE glam! I think you did great with that look! And I sympathize about the photo thing; I'm still trying to get it down, too. .

Jeneva, you are SO dedicated! That is amazing. And you like the dress? It IS in the donate pile...but I am debating. Maybe Fruitful is right and I should save it for my daughter...hmmm....if you want to talk, let's talk.

Sharon, I think the eclectic mix of your outfit echoes what was best in the decade, to my mind— a mix of high and low, dressy and tough.

Thanks, Mary! I could feel your extra big '80s hair here in Seattle.

Rita, Aida's Van Halen look, and Jonesy's overall's = KILLER to the power of KILLER. Those '80's looks fed my soul.

Many of you did a super job of looking extremely stylish in a "today type of way". It just goes to show that today's fashion is a modern mix of all the decades.

I was out of town so had to miss Thursday and Friday's challenges. The entries here are really fun. I was in college in the 80's and wore a lot of skinny black bottoms, big oversized blazers (usually from Salvation Army or Canal Jean) similar to Jonesy's 1st look. ALways button downs all buttoned up and a big brooch at the neck. In the late 80s at my first real job I did wear suits and dresses with light hose (white and ivory sheer), and scrunched socks with Reebocks for my commute and change into pointy toe white pumps. I had big hair most of the time too (do they still make Stiff Stuff?)
Me in 1988 in my lovely drop waist "midi" and wings!:
