Does your home decor echo your fashion style?

Maybe an odd question, but I was just thinking about this recently. I was reading one of E's posts, and someone commented that her home decor really fit with her storybook style. And I recently realized that my neighbor's minimal, solid color outfits look just like her home decor (minimal, no pattern, few accessories).

Looking around my home, I would definitely say that my home looks like "me". Boho, as in earthy colors, plants, global touches, textiles from far-flung places, some vintage accents. I I guess some would say quite maximal, but I do prefer a somewhat "curated" look. I like a lot of pretty things to look at, but I don't like too much clutter! I realize that sounds pretty contradictory! I would say that translates to my style as well. I love layers and accessories, but I never do head-to-toe bohemian.

I'm curious, does your fashion sense translate to your home decor? If you're a modern classic, do you prefer clean lined furniture and minimal clutter? If your style is edgy is that reflected in your home? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Well, clearly I'm a yes. ;D Although my colour scheme's a bit different: a lot more white & beige than can be found in my closet (I live in a studio, so the lightness helps to make the space feel bigger) & the colour accents are still muted but often a bit warmer than my most flattering clothing colours. But rumpled, cosy, bookish, comfortable, charming, and a bit vintage are my aim for both.

Yes, I have a teal couch.

I would say my home decor, like my style, is eclectic. In addition to the aforementioned teal couch, which is kind of a vintage-inspired design, we also have a more modern looking glass and metal coffee table and bow ties (like, actual bow ties that my husband wears sometimes) as curtain tie-backs.

I would ideally like to streamline the decor a bit more in the same way that I have streamlined my style recently, but the place is small and we have a lot of stuff, so that's not happening right now.

No very different. My clothing is mostly black and gray. Minimalist, few accessories. My home is cream, apricot, muted greens with Louis xv and Xvi furniture, porcelains, antiques, silver, leather bound books, object d'art, lots of photos. Both are me. I prefer simple elegant clothing but my soul is renewed by a beautiful space.

My house is more minimal than my clothes. I'd venture to say that my main decor items are books and Persian carpets. That's likely some kind of gut reaction to my mother's hoarding tendencies. I never realized it till one of my friends wanted me to go antiquing and my reaction was, no, I'm not bringing in any more old stuff!

I'd bet it usually does. The only thing is that it sometimes takes a lot longer and more $$ to get a house where you want it. We purchased a house two years ago and are still working on getting the "bones" where we want them. Although I've been working on my closet for longer than that so maybe they are the same! I like clean lines and very minimal clutter in my house with pops of color. I guess that could probably also describe my clothing style.

I think my taste is pretty similar--- practical/functional, fairly minimal but comfortable, tactile, rustic, on the masculine end of things, historic mixed with industrial/modern and multicultural/travel related pieces thrown in. Brown wide-wale corduroy sofa, steel and cedar plank industrial TV console, white iron bedstead, distressed cognac leather ottoman, olive green comforter, slot canyon photos, local artist ceramics, etc. Clothing I'm a jean jacket, docs, chenille, frye boots, moto hardware type girl.

I'd say yes. When I designed my new house I had planned to go very pale and serene, but then I fell in love with a lime green velvet sofa, and next thing I knew the ceiling in the den was bright purple, and things snowballed from there!

Given that my avatar is my favorite chair (which I am usually sitting in when I read and post here), you can probably guess my answer to your question.
But in actuality, while I am pretty content with the state of my home decor, I am still working to "get there" with my personal style. But I defintely aspire to the same vibe: modern-classic-mixed-with-some-traditional-elements-plus-lots-of-texture-and-some-ethnic-touches.
<Slapping self on Forehead> Maybe I just stumbled my way into a(n admittedly too long) style descriptor???

Yes. I have a modern classic dressing style and look for pieces that are as functional and comfortable as they are aesthetically pleasing. And I would use the same words to describe my decor as well...

I like a few well placed feminine detailing even with my decor....as in floral prints in small doses and pretty detailing without frills and flounces. And I like colour and print in my clothes as well...though I stick to a palette that appeals the most to me. Strangely, the palette is pretty similar with my decor too! I did not realize that until I wrote it here....

However, the style came far more easily to me for my home decor (maybe because I am a designer) but took a while with my dressing style. At this point of time, I think they are a perfect match!

No, because I don't give much thought to home decor and most of the thoughts are about functionality, not design. DH has had more imput into what choices we've made, and they're mostly from IKEA. Also a few photo shoots organized by our families gave us so many photos we don't have hooks or space left for much more. So it is mostly accidental

I would say my furniture purchases have mostly been dictated by where we live. I live near the Stickley factory, so I have Stickley furniture. I guess Craftsman style furniture is then mixed with an eclectic mix of art by my DD, photos of family, a few art pieces from a local art/antique dealer, some antiques that have been handed down, some very comfortable overstuffed leather couches, two large overstuffed chairs with matching ottomans. I have oriental rugs, wood floors, painted wood trim, but the design of the house is a mix of traditional and modern. It is an open floor plan with tons of windows opening in all directions but mostly to the back which is a forever green preserve. I mostly let nature be the decoration because the living space often feels like a big cozy sunroom without having the sun glare in your eyes. We have lots of books, and built in shelves, but not too many nick nacks. I'm not a collector, so it's fairly simple and clean. I do not like clutter, but with my DH and DS it's a constant battle.

Except for the color scheme I think the decor matches my style: Genuine Composed; Soft, fresh, calm, classic, polished. I think it does. The color scheme is not light summer, but maybe an Autumn palette. I used a decorated plate I loved as the inspiration for the colors. It has rusts, cobalt blues, reds, golds, mauve, green, and a few other colors. It may sound odd on paper but it ended up looking very nice in my house.

Yes, I think(and hope!) so:-).
Clear, modern (almost minimal) straight lines, but not overly trendy! Neutrals mixed with a few warm color blocks, no patterns. Natural light and transparency. Natural materials+glass+ stainless steel. BUT, I have a burnt orange leather coach:-)

No, it really doesn't at all. I mean, I suppose if you consider the rooms we have redone then yes. My husband and I moved in 11 years ago and painted the kitchen red and did some black and white checkered tilework for the blacksplash. Then when we were forced to redo a bathroom we chose a blue floral wallpaper and satin finished stainless lights. But three kids, one dog, homeschooling, extremely tight budget, health issues and life got in the way of us doing the things we need to. We've really outgrown the space so keep thinking we'll move but we haven't. This is a good reminder of what a difference it makes. I really need to try to make home improvements more of a priority now that my youngest is three.

Probably, but my house is "dressed" in colors that don't look great on me, but which suit the space. Most of my furniture is either family antique (some big pieces) or traditional, most of my major pieces of clothing are traditional/classic. But I mix it up with some fun and quirky things and art, that would be the clothing equivalent to jewelry, and I have to admit to using colorful tops or under-layers and necklaces to give personality to my basics.

Great topic. My house is done in warm colors but that decision was based more on what looked good against the woodwork than personal preference. I was trying to keep the style consistent with the age of the house (1930 Tudor Cottage) so the decor has more pattern and detail than I typically wear in my wardrobe. I guess both my decor and my fashion sense could be called traditional though so there are some similarities.

E- charming is definitely the word that comes to mind when I see your home and outfits!

Diana- ooh,teal couch! You should do a WIW post "lounging" like a movie star on it. I bet it would complement a lot of your lovely outfits!

Gryffin- your home sounds beautiful. Definitely sounds elegant-traditional, while your personal style sounds more elegant-modern. I bet they work together beautifully.

Elly-I love a mix of rustic and industrial with treasures from one's travels.

Ryce-I'm definitely still getting there with my personal style too, while my home has stayed fairly consistent. Yeah, that style descriptor is a bit of a mouthful!

Staysfit-your home sounds lovely! I love an autumn palette with Craftsman style!

Maneera-I definitely had you in mind when I asked this question, remembering some of your colorful walls! I miss having color on the walls in this house. This one is builder beige(blah!). But I hope I'm making up for it with plenty of texture and pattern and colorful accents.

I think so. I'm a modern classic dresser, with a strong classic/tailored streak, but I have a number of items in my wardrobe that are less MC, and more boho, for example.

Our house is old (well, by American standards) at 170-ish years, and I love antiques, so I tend towards classic elements like persian carpets, old family pieces, and items picked up at auction. But I don't like clutter or frills, and I do like a light, airy aesthetic, so our wall colors tend to be very light grays, creams, or blues. I also like eclectic pops, so we have several pieces that are contemporary to lighten the antiques.

AviahMariah made a great point that decorating your house is much more time consuming and expensive than filling your closet. We still have a way to go in that department!

My home is where my style was a few years ago. Looks fine, the pieces work well together, but not quite where I want it to be. I've curated my wardrobe over the last few years and DH and I have finally started doing so in the house. We have a new sofa coming next month! But it's slow going, so it'll be awhile before the transformation is complete...

Not really. My DH prefers very uncluttered spaces with less 'decoration' than I might want to have around, so we compromise. And I like to use colors in my home dec that don't suit my coloring personally and that I don't wear, but that I like in general.

Home decor is a compromise between what I like and what DH likes. I'm minimalist, almost austere, while he is traditional and all about comfort. After 20 years in an older home with high ceilings, big rooms, and lots of white wood trim - We moved, and are now one year in a modern (20 year old) ranch/bungalow cross that Is open concept, with dark hardwood floors! We kept some of our better furniture, but sold or gave away a lot of stuff when we moved. There was a little downsizing involved.

We did paint all the principal rooms in the new house (BM Revere Pewter) and invest in some new furniture in neutral colours but somewhat traditional in style. There is more to do, but we are building up the decorating war chest before proceeding.

Below are some pics of the 'family' room which is most representative of our style (mine and DH). We have two young adult sons who are on the verge of fledging, so we are not quite empty nesters yet!

The kids joke that if it was just me, when it came time to go into a 'home', they would roll up my futon and put my possessions in a shoe box for the move! Since it isn't just me, we've got more stuff.

I think I more aspire to dress like my decor than the other way. I've lived here for 5 years and just now am getting around to building white and grey into my wardrobe ideal. I'm a slow learner...;-)
