Hi Everyone!

I took my tux jacket back today and on the way home stopped at TJ Maxx just to have a look at purses. Murphy's Law of Fashion states that as soon as you give up on something though, you find it, so I came home with a denim jacket (which has been on my list). It's a western style denim jacket, which I slightly prefer over a denim blazer, just because it seems more fun and casual. But I'm not sure it's a good look for my body type, since they are kind of boxy, and I have broad shoulders. But here are some photos with 3 different outfits I have. I want to wear this jacket mainly with dresses and skirts. I'd be willing to spend some money to have it altered as well--anyone got any ideas? If not, I could just take it back.

Ana - I am afraid that I think you are right and it is too boxy. Looked best with the dress though. Not sure about alterations

It has great potential. Now have the whole thing altered. That’s what I did. Be sure to ask for a quote first, though.

Have you seen the ones at Gap? They are in a nicer wash.

HI Ana, This is a tough one. Generally, I like the jacket with the skirts. But it's a little less polished than what I'm used to seeing you wear. But I do think some nipping at the waist would remedy that. How does it fit in the bust? Even though you will most likely never button it, the bust fit affects altering at the waist. Because the seamstress has to start somewhere--she can't just start taking inches off the middle. She'd need to start somewhere under the arm hole and gradually shave off material towards the waist, then taper back out to give the hem a little kickout. So would the jacket be uncomfortable if it was smaller in the bust by an inch or two?

But I have to comment on the second look. With the full skirt and your hair up in a pony--you looked like a 1950's teenybopper--wearing her bf's jacket while hanging out at the malt shoppe!

I like the idea of the jacket on you Ana ( I have a similar one, but much more fitted) . I do agree that it's a bit boxy and it needs tailoring. Esprit has one that looks to be more fitted:

Sarah and I saw one at Gap about a month ago. The wash was sort of faded--is that what you mean, Angie?

I like the sound of your alterations, Nicole. It would actually be fine to take it in at the chest. It's a medium, Lucky brand jacket. I wanted to try a small, just to see what it would be like (although I doubt it would have fit my shoulders), but they didn't have one. I remembered Angie said that we'd probably have to have a denim jacket altered anyway, so I just decided to get it. It fits my shoulders really well, but is big everywhere else (which you can see from the photos).

Ana, I really like the jacket and think once you get it altered it will fit the bill.

It's funny Nicole mentioned the '50's teeny bopper look because my first thought when I glanced at the photo was that you had a scarf tied around your ponytail (it was just the line of the mirror in the photo) but I immediately thought of poodle skirts I then saw the side view photo and you definitely aren't wearing a scarf.

I actually like it & think it's a classic. It looks good with both of the skirts and works to make the dress more casual (BTW, that dress is gorgeous on you!). I prefer this dark wash to the one at the GAP (it was sort of faded looking) but the Gap one was really soft. You can probably get it altered but this style never seems to look really fitted anyway.

I tried to comment last night. I think the fit is great in the shoulders and I love the 3/4 sleeves. I think it looks more polished than the typical denim jacket (could be the wash and the stitching?) It really suits you. With alteration, it will be fab!

Thanks for the comments everyone, and the link Tanya! It does look more fitted, but I wonder if it would fit over my chest and shoulders? The main issue I have with this style of jacket is that if it's big enough to fit my shoulders, it's usually big everywhere else.

I think I will have it altered along the back and side seams so that it tapers more. I liked the way it looked when I was holding it down with my hands on my hips. I think it just needs some bulk taken out.

Ana, if you have an opportunity to run by Ross (I know the one at Tech Ridge has them) check out the NYandCo. jacket. It's REALLY fitted and I love the wash. And it's $12.99. I'm going by that area today if you want me to get one for you:

I didn't get photos of the angles all around, but the seaming is perfect in the back and the jacket does not fit boxy at all.

Thanks Sarah! I really like the look of yours, too. That's such a sweet offer! If you see one that is the same size as yours, would you pick it up for me? There's a Ross by my house and I will check it out today, but I know sometimes they have different things. I will send you an e-mail if I find one this morning before I go to school.

What are you doing tomorrow afternoon (heading to San Antonio)? I can pick up the jacket and pay you back, and buy you some coffee for your trouble, if you are free.

The Gap jacket is in a great industrial wash (it's not online). It's fabulous actually. Less Western looking.

I had my ENTIRE denim jacket altered. Everywhere. It cost an arm and a leg but it’s a Diesel jacket in dark stretch denim. I will have it for life and it fits like a glove. I love the look of a classic fitted denim jacket. It’s retro. These items are becoming vintage. Love that. Come on gals! Let’s have some edge!

Okay, I'll ask. What is an industrial wash? And what constitutes an edgy denim jacket? I haven't worn one in years and years, but I really admire the look on other ladies. If I end up altering this Lucky one, I think I would have the seams tapered and all the bulk taken out so that it is very fitted. I'd probably crop an inch or two off the bottom as well. I figure it will probably cost at least $100, which I'm okay with if it'll end up a wardrobe staple.

Okay, I just went to Gap and bought the only denim jacket I could find there. I can't remember if this is the same one Sarah and I tried on a couple months ago or not--I think that one was more faded. Anyway, I will post photos tonight and see if this is the jacket Angie had in mind. That way maybe you gals who are looking too will have a visual. This oVal one is more fitted and a tad more cropped than the Lucky one I bought, but I still think I will need to have it taken in.

I called a GAP (the only one is 2 hours away from me) and the only dark denim one she said they have is $49.50. She did not know if it is fitted or not. She said it is pretty classic.

Ana I'm glad you found the one at the Gap because the NY&Co ones were gone. I'm thinking because you're shorter waisted than I am, you may have had to take that one in anyway.
