my first thought was edgy casual.

100% Angie and I love it!

But if we're voting on a name, I'd say urban chic or tough urban chic. I don't read tomboy here. Yes, there's an element of androgyny. But the crisp white shirt is pristine. You might be able to run with the prep school boys but not the boys from the other side of the tracks, despite the boots.

Cathy and Una, thanks for the explanation of UWP vs. Urban Fashionista. : )

I'm going to be a cop-out and not define it. I don't see a style type so much as you being your beautiful and bold self. Rock on, Angie!

Urban modern classic!

- Downtown Art Girl

The white shirt reminds me of an artist's smock and the Docs make me think of a downtown girl.

This was a really fun read! Thanks, ladies.

Amy, that was a very sweet comment. *hug*

Cathy, of course you can say that

Laura and Suz, thanks for the "Angie" validation.

Mochi and MisMaven, you win most original style description! Your imaginations are divine

It's really, really interesting to read your perceptions of this outfit. They are also quite polarized.

FWIW, I would not have described this outfit as Urban Classic. To my eye, if I had swapped out my Docs for refined flat black riding boots, and worn a classic tailored blazer instead of a biker jacket - it would be 100% Urban Classic. I guess Greg and I are true soul mates who see the same thing because when I asked him whether he thought that this outfit was Urban Classic a minute ago - he said "no, but it would be if....", and made exactly the same changes as I just mentioned - blazer and classic riding boots.

It's not important to label the style at all - and what you see is meaningful for sure. It was a good exercise, though :). We should it again.

First of all, I've got to say that despite its simplicity (or maybe because of it?), that's one of my favourite outfits on you. It makes me wish desperately that I could wear crisp white shirts without looking like I've got the flu.

I think the haircut really adds to the overall look.

I'd say Urban Chic, but what the heck do I know. Certainly not Tomboy, and not really UWP either.

Hmm...I would have considered changing out a blazer and flat riding boots to be classic only and not really urban at all. I guess I'm confused as to what constitutes "urban" then.

My first reaction is rocker-poet. (Is that even a thing?) Anyway, now I have to go back and read all the comments and see what everyone else thought.

Hahaha, I like "Rocker Poet."

Ana, the outfit that I described with the swapped out items (with the blazer and flat riding boots), to my eye it's my hair, specs and bag that makes the combination Urban Classic and not Classic. Does that make sense?

I like Urban Classic definition as well - but I am notoriously bad with definitions

It makes sense to me, Angie. Someone recently described a new friend to me as having a style similar to mine. (What? I didn't even think I HAD a style yet!) Her words included "urban" and when pressed to explain what made it urban she mentioned my hair in particular.

Does urban have kind of a "tough/edgy" element to it?

Without reading any of the responses I thought Urban With A Dose Of Punk (the leather jacket and boots look very punk rock to me) I don't really see much "classic" in this, and after reading your description it makes sense why. Either way I LOVE love love this outfit!!

I see Equestrian Chic. I know they are Docs and not riding boots but it has an equestrian vibe to me and i love it!

I am not good at naming styles but to me this has a very classic vibe (the crisp white shirt), it also has edge (the Docs) and of course it has your (Angie) personal flavor or style in there as well. What I mean is that someone else could wear the same combination but create a different feel or vibe. In any case I do love this look, it was nice to be reminded of this post.

Tough-chic with a lashing of androgynous.

Hmmm. That's why hair and specs are so important to one's style. Boy have I got a lot to learn!

I have no idea what to call it, but really like it! I love your boots and wish they made them in blue.

I wore a version of this Monday! Swap out the black Docs for my wedge heeled cognac ones and the bag for my brown hobo. Then add leopard print scarf and a some silvery stripes to the tunic shirt.

It was my "sitting at Ikea waiting around for a merchandise exchange" chic outfit.

Angie, I would call your outfit "classic Pacific Northwest city girl". The long, crisp white shirt and your eyeglass frames elevate it from looking "punk" and the way you've paired these items with your Docs feels so Pacific Northwest (or in B.C. we'd say West Coast) to me. Love it.

Rich and Crisp, Biker Chic! What a fun read!

Crisp bohemian. It's a lovely look!

So, so interesting! Thanks for the kind words.

Ana, Urban has a sense of edge for sure - but it needn't be a tough edge. Does that make sense? We spoke extensively about "edge" and what it means a few years ago, and many think it means "tough biker style", whereas I don't necessarily think that's the case. Edge means any look that is less mainstream.

The romantic poet association cracks me up.

The few Bohemian perceptions are very interesting too. I don't see that at all - but we all see different things

So I've been pondering this thread... If someone like k.d. lang (my girl crush!) was wearing this outfit, it would clearly come across as butch. Yet here Angie's ladylike persona shines through. So how does that work? How does one's sense of self color an outfit?

Una, we posted at the same time. And you crack me up with your "girl crush"! That's an interesting question - very introspective.

Yeah, 20 years of crushing... my husband knows I'd ditch him for her in a hot second. And he still got me tickets to her recent concert tour as a birthday gift! What a guy.

In any case, I'm trying to step outside my subjective knowledge of you and think about what I would think if I saw you on the street, knowing nothing about you. That's another way our outfits get "colored", by what we know about each other. Kind of like when you tell someone an outfit is killer because you know their style, versus some objective definition of killer... If I didn't know you, would I guess you were an adorable closet, er, k.d. lang fan? White button down, jeans, combat boots... all cultural signifiers of a sort, yes?

I hope this isn't an inappropriate post - if it is, let me know right away!
