So I went shopping for booties. I tried about ten pairs today. Here are the best contenders. They range from sleek (The Sam Edelman Pettys) to quite R.A.T.E. (Steve Madden Stinnger)

I am sorry I didn't get a full body shot with each boot: at first I didn't know what I was doing and by the end I was chatting with other customers and lost some of my focus. It turns out though that this is a great way to try on boots: (I tried on six pairs at The Bay alone.) Put them on....walk to the mirror....take pics....walk back. Usually that as enough walking and a few minutes to sort out any fit issues. All of these fit well.

#9, 10 Steve Madden, Stinnger. (I didn't know I was supposed to fold down the top!)

#2 are my favourite. They are sleek, but interesting with the folded detail on the side. I think they would work with outfits from casual to fairly dressy.

I also like 2 (in shots 3 and 4) but comfort, heel height and price are also considerations.

You have a shapely ankle so I think the higher ones are less flattering, especially the Cobb Hill (Shots 7 and 8). My next least favourite is the other laced pair (shots 9 and 10). I like all the rest very much.

My first choice is the last ones and my second choice is the Clark's - depends on the rest of the intended outfit a bit!

The Ecco sculpted are gorgeous.
They all work, although I'm not sure I love 9/10.
Have you got your style aspiration words yet? The Eccos are very modern and architectural. The Cobb Hill look great on you and they seem more retro.

So far I like 2 & 4, thigh you're right, we might get a better idea from more styled shots. Unless you are planning a lot of outfits around heels.

They are all quite different in style and heel height. What is your style preference: minimal / edgy / retro? And what is your need for the booties: do you need dressy booties or booties you can wear for a full day of walking?
If the comfort level is the same for all of them I would prefer Ecco for every day bootie. For a dressy pair I like SE Morillo (if you can manage the heel height) but my style is streamlined and simple. What is yours or at least what are you drawn to?

I think all of them work. To pick one, I think it would be helpful to think about how you want to wear them. If you want to be wearing them almost every day, for hours at a time, you might want to go with one that has a low heel rather than the higher-heel ones. Also, depending on your weather, the lower-heel ones might be safer if you will be walking on ice. (But maybe by the time you have ice, you'll be in snow boots anyway.)

Depending on the width of the leg opening on your pants, the higher shafts of the Ecco and Cobb Hill might interfere with the bottoms of your pants. You might want to check some of these with pants before deciding.

I agree with Fern that it would be helpful to think about your style aspirations. Do you have any ideas of where you would like to head with your wardrobe? More sophisticated? More casual? More RATE?

Sveta--I am drawn to extremes. I love the Pettys (so sleek!) and I love the Stinnger's (so combat bootish!)

All cost about the same--all of them are within about $5 of each other. The flatter the better, probably. I will be transitioning to these from Steel-Toed saftey boots AND I will be shopping and running errands in them until the snow flies--and then I will wear them primarily indoors.

fern-- I have not yet done my "style words" I have no idea how to even start something like that.

Kiwigal--thanks for the comment about my ankles (blush.) I am actually quite grateful they don't swell.

Shevia--those are quite different, aren't they? I love both, too. I keep calling the Clarke's "Spy girl" which I just love.

Unfrumped-- I wish I could have afforded bringing them home and dressing up in my closet, lol! I will be wearing leggings and slim fitting knit pants for most of the winter.

I like the SE Pettys best. But to be honest I've loved them ever since I first saw them.

Gigi--good point about the shafts. It was another hot day today--much too hot to wear pants. I may have to bring those home.

Amiable and Jen--two more votes for the Eccos. I was just about to leave the store when I turned and sa them high up on a shelf! They are a wedge heel--and it is quite narrow. But they felt fine to walk in (for all of five minutes!)

Jaileen--to be honest, the minute I slipped those Pettys onto my feet, I thought, Well, now I know what all the fuss is about. They fit beutifully nd felt comfortable.

But I think I like a little RATE in my style--but it's tough to figure out how best to express that.

I tried on a beautifull frothy knit sleeveless cardigan from EF the other day and it was exactly what I wanted--how I wanted to dress--a sleek foundation of a solid top and pant--and then this long flowy thing. Some boots like the spy belle would bring it out of la la land nd ground it in something cool--a nice juxtaposition in my mind. But you know what? I will never wear that flowy sleeveless cardigan. I just can't spend $$$ just to look good sitting in front of my computer all day (I'd have to take it off even to do dishes). (You know, that whole fantasy life vs real life thing). So, I am stumped.

Here are a few photos of clothes I have purchased for fall/winter from past posts. As you all know, I have been really struggling. (#4 is a look I've been working on with Mom. The over tunic is something she's sewing.)

I'm on the minority! I like the profile of the Samantha boots the best. Since it is a higher bootie with a little flare it balances the tops you seem to favor. They would look killer with outfits 2 and 3 in your most recent post, as well as with skirts. You have inspired me to get booties too!

Thanks Missapb! These boots remind me of a pair I bought in the early 90's. They have a sharper toe and hooks at the top for the laces--they reminded me so strongly of boots from the turn of the century. I loved wearing them. My daughter now has them--they are two sizes too small for me now, alas. They were much more refined, though, than these.

I like the Pettys but I am biased - I have a pair. They work very well with pants and with some skirts. That said the Steve Maddens (as well as the Pettys) look good on your shapely ankles too!

As some else said, mind the shaft height if you plan to wear with certain pant styles.

I'm a huge fan of the Pettys - I own 4 pairs of them! And the main thing that draws me to them is the comfort! They really work for my feet! I think the Echos are really nice looking but they are so very architectural that I can't see them working with your style. I also like the Clark's and I think they would add a touch of RATE if that's what you're looking for!

Having read now what you will be wearing with them and the need for comfort and a low heel, I would suggest the Perry's or the Eccos. They are streamlined and simple but very stylish. Would work with most things and I think would be a great first bootie. Then next year add another boot that is a little different that isn't maybe quite as versatile.

They are all great. I have problem feet so I always go for comfort first. I have to wear leather (a conflict for me as a vegetarian but a necessity for my feet). Are the Clarks leather? I checked them and I am not sure they are. That would be a problem for me.

I love the Pettys. Not sure I could wear them. Wish I could. I think simple is better to start with and they have the right amount of style.

What Sveta said, word for word. My faves are the Pettys, the Eccos, and the last Sam Edelman's -- but I have a sleek style. Comfort comes first -- and it does depend on the outfits you have in mind. I think the Eccos might be the most versatile.

Looking through the pictures, the Ecco ones stood out as amazingly flattering on you. I think they all do work, although the Cobb Hill ones are my least favorite because they do kind of mask the shape of your ankles, while the rest really emphasize how nice and shapely your legs are.

I agree that the Pettys would be a good basic, go-with-everything pair.

My first instinct is that I like the Ecco best. However, after reading your description of slipping on the Petty, I'd say go for those. When my feet say "ahhhhh..." to a pair of shoes, I know those are the ones for me.
