Colour me beautiful

I wouldn't know where to start with the introduction of colour question (the Trinny and Susannah comment struck a cord though), BUT I can't even believe that is you in the before photo (except for the smile, that hasn't changed). An inspiration!

This will be fascinating for me. I grew up hearing that most colours worked with black, so this T&S comment is a new one for me. Can't wait to hear the YLF take!

WOW fantastic weight loss.
I was also a T&S follower but always struggled with this 'rule'. I'd ignore this one and mix black with any colour. I don't have much black clothing but here's a few outfits with black and colours hope it helps x

Wow, you look terrific! Great job on the weight loss.

I mix black with all kinds of colors, but I find it has the most impact with bold, saturated colors: purples, blues, reds, etc. This year I've been mixing it with other neutrals like grey and brown, and that's widened the color spectrum so I can add creams, mustard, pinks, etc.

I never read or watched T&S so I don't know or follow their rules. I've watched tons of Clinton and Stacy but even their rules I only follow if it makes sense to me.

You look so fantastic!! What an incredible weight loss success.!!

IMO, black works best with:
other neutrals or muted shades - grey, taupe, olive, brown, eggplant
neutrals contrasting in tone: off white, pure white, camel
Saturated bright or sour color: Fushia, turquoise, lime green, emerald, chartreuse, cobalt blue, any bright red, yellow
Metallic anything: bronze, silver, copper
Prints with bold color plus black, anything animal printed

That is a long list.
I do not think black works with:
pastels,
small soft floral prints
Black is so versatile that it can work with mostly everything. In color class I teach that black has a weight that needs to be balanced well with other color. That can be done in infinite amounts of variation.

I"m glad Jean weighed in- her list of do's and don'ts make sense. sometimes I try to put black with something and it just doesn't work, but am never sure quite why. that makes sense about the "weight" of black needing balance

I echo Jean. I think that bright colours work with back as long as you add another neutral like white, cream or grey. I’m not fond of pastels with black. I also like extremely dark colours with black like ink blue and eggplant.

Julie, you look good in muted brights. Do you like those tones?

Angie, my ribs and hips are larger now than pre pregnancy and because of this my weight is a little higher but I would not want to lose any more weight. Also pre pregnancy my breasts were an E cup and I'm now a C cup. If anything my body now is easier to dress.

Right I'm going to start looking for muted brights, my wardrobe needs a dose of fun once the basics are in place. I like the idea of sun faded brights, blues and I always like metallics.

Thanks again and Alecia just enjoy your pregnancy, remain active and eat sensibly now and it does save allot of work after the birth.

Wow, Julie! You look fantastic! Congratulations on successfully losing your baby weight. I enjoyed seeing your little one in the photo. Isn't it amazing how fast they grow?

I echo the the others about black and pastels. I'm not crazy about that combo, either. I'm finding that since YLF, I hardly ever wear black pants anymore, but I did recently add my first pair of black jeans to my wardrobe. I know this may seem predictable, but I've always been drawn to black and white, cream, or gray.

Congrats on your weight loss, Julie! I echo what has been said about black - but wrapping my head around "rules" for black has been hard - I used to think black was slimming, classic, and overly flattering (and it can be, but I had messed all of them up and so I actually using black to its full potential!

I've noticed my black wardrobe pieces become orphans - I need to incorporate texture!

I don't think I have much more to add to what Jean and Angie and the others have said. My favourite combinations with black are: white & red, white & (dark) green, white & dove grey & yellow.

Julie, you look amazing! I just want to add that you would look great with blues or greens paired with black. A French blue or medium bright turquoise or cobalt. Last spring (I think) Chanel showed lots of black paired with jade green (a medium muted green) that i thought was gorgeous but have yet to find it in the stores. My computer is so slow thast i won't attempt to find a link. If you google the runway show, the color isn't shown until at least half way through, as i remember.
