If you inherited a closet that is heavy on open shelving as I did (you can see my photos on Ms Mary's thread, here) my suggestion is: use the shelves for the items you wear or carry all the time. Put everything else in your drawers. Items that sit on open shelves will collect dust if they are not in heavy rotation, so you don't want to use open shelving for long-term storage.

It's just like your kitchen. You don't want to use one of those pot-hanging contraptions (or open shelving!) near where you cook, except for the pots you use all the time, or your pots will become furred with kitchen grease and dust. It works in restaurants because those pots and pants are in constant use; at home, think carefully before installing open storage.
