34 pieces total--- I also have a large-ish gear wardrobe and a holding zone with a skirt and some tops and a large donation bag that I'm waiting to donate to a local charity which is mostly items that no longer fit correctly. I also have a small "at home only" capsule that has clothes that aren't fit for public. Most of the tees I had to buy recently after switching to a 6-day a week school/work schedule.
While I can basically wear the same clothes to my grad program and my new job, my current closet is really lacking in tops, shoes, and jackets/sweaters. My daily winter working wardobe consists of 10 tops, 3 jeans, 1 slacks, 2 shoes, and the two jackets. Everything else is either for spring summer or not appropriate for work (dress clothing/dry clean, etc.) --- So 18 items total for this season.
I can get dressed everyday at this level, especially if I fudge a bit and wear a grey gear jacket to the lab and maybe a wicking gear shirt or shoes on saturday. However, style is limited, comfort in different temps is limited, and laundry is a constant worry.
Being someone who doesn't own many acessories (except jewelry, much of which is not allowed at work) it gets tedious. Perhaps part of this is because most of the tops are similar, the two leather jackets are both black, and all the jeans are bootcuts. Most of my winter wardrobe is dark neutral. Perhaps if I had more variety and patterns with the same number of pieces I would feel more stylish, but the tops in particular are the best option for comfort in cold work temps, and bootcuts the easiest with my current shoes.
