Chambray maxi skirt?

I must start out by saying that I am on a shopping break, yes. I am. Howwwwever, I had $12 in store credit from goodwill and since it comes in the form of a receipt, I just knew I should spend it or lose it. I actually found some nice items on the .50 rack and even got risky and bought a yellow striped button up which is definitely the opposite of my usual.

Anyway, I couldn't get this maxi chambray out of my mind. Anyone have one? I went back today and bought it with my leftover credit (ok ok and $2 worth of change from my purse, but I am definitely done shopping now). it's GAP and I can't find a link, I will post a pic when it comes out of the dryer. I would love any pics or ideas of how to style! I was surprised not see much when I googled but I haven 't checked pinterest.

You will have to be very, very careful in styling. You could look like a member of certain religious sects.

If you like a boho look, take a peak over at freepeople.com -- I recall seeing some denim maxis over there.

Annagybe that made me laugh but I totally get what you are saying. I was actually homeschooled so there was a bit of that going around in my neck of the woods too. never my mom, thank goodness. Anyway, this is a tiered skirt and a very light fabric....which is why I would call it chambray over jean skirt. I am sure it can work, I will just have to work at it! I will check out freepeople, I definitely like their styles.

I had the same initial thought as Anna. If you are going boho vibe, maybe a ribbed tank with a lot of arm candy and metallic or jeweled strappy sandals?

Ok, I apparently lied, it was in the wash and NOW is drying. You guys are making me doubt myself here! If so, I may have wasted nearly $3....

Nah… you didn't waste anything yet. Try going on Pinterest and Polyvore and look under "Festival Wear" or "Boho Style" skirts. I bet you will find some fun ideas there. The Sundown catalog may be another place to get some ideas.

Don't doubt yourself - I would totally wear a chambray maxi skirt. In fact, now you have me thinking that I may need to make one!

Sure...wear boho style with a tank or a fitted long sleeve top that's a little longer than hipbone length. At least that's how I'd wear maxis to make proportions look good. Oh, and if you have a wide belt, Ralph Lauren/Chaps looks often include peasant blouse tucked into maxi, wide belted at skirt waistline.

ETA: And that's my opinion as a homeschooler, homeschooling.

Styling is everything! And I say that as a homeschooling mom looking for a chambray midi skirt!

1. I'm thinking of making this skirt in a slightly softer chambray

2. I think this one would be cute in chambray, too, but it would probably be better for a pear -- I need a little more waist structure.

I'd encourage you to haul that skirt out of the dryer and play in the closet. I'd love to see what you come up with!

Ha ha, "certain religious sects"... I know the look and used to wear it to some extent. I remember reading online some pick-up lines that were supposed to poke fun at this type of dressing. One of them was, "You look really good in that shapeless plaid jumper."

Not all homeschoolers are into "the look." I know a homeschooling family where the mom looks like she was a former model. No shapeless plaid jumpers there! :^)

here it is! i don't love the drawstring but I think i could put a wide belt over it. Or something. I will have to experiment.

Gigi, even in the pioneer days of homeschooling when my parents startecd, there were many folks who dressed pretty mainstream. Now I would say that 9 out of 10 of the homeschool moms dress nothing like that dated stereotype. I really feel like I need to up my game in front of my fellow homeschool mamas, in fact.

I'm with AG -- will need to see it in action. I have a wee bit of poison eye for tiered skirts but maybe this can be worked in a cute boho fashion.

I could see it with a sheer peasant style blouse and cowboy boots. Not my style, but if you're the boho, prairie type it could be cute!

Tiered chambray? Maybe just own it.

I could totally see this with a tatted doily head covering, scripture-slogan oversized t-shirt and running shoes.

I personally think all items have the potential to become a staple - a lot depends on our personality and style - like plaid shirts are a staple for me, whether they are in fashion or not - they go with my look of fitted denim and booties.

I think a loose/fitted tank on top tucked in, a wide belt on the waist would really make your skirt look super cool! As would a crop top if you are comfortable with that..

I also think loose knit tops - ones that are like a throw on - with big loose holes between stitches would also work with a tank underneath. I wonder if I make sense - like the material ponchos are made of.

But overall the style will tend towards boho.

And if nothing else works, cut it up to make a knee length skirt - I think you would be able to work a lot more tops with it.

Yep… now that I see the skirt pic, I would definitely say that the way to style this would be full-out "boho". Keeping boho current seems to be a lot about accessories -- great hats, belts, boots, jewelry. I am also seeing some retro-boho tiered skirts updated by combining them with modern pieces like cropped tops and sleek booties.

I'm with Alaskagirl -- not sold but could be. I'm worried about a "sister wife" vibe but if you edge it up (or however your personal style would intervene to prevent it from going overly prairie costume), I would be thrilled to change my mind.

That's a really hard style to pull off. But if you had maybe a prairie type blouse and some boots it could work.

I second T! If an outfit looks awesome it's invariably less about what's currently fashionable and more about the attitude with which you wear it!

I would wear this with low, heeled cowgirl-inspired boots and a boxy, wide necked/off one shoulder, slightly cropped top! Stack on the bangles, minimal/natural makeup and get something bohemian happening with your hair!

I also love the denim-on-denim with tan accessories look (denim button down, wide tan belt and boots with a Cuban heel etc)!

I'm terrible at styling, but fuzzylogic's suggestion sounds great to me! I like the wide-necked, off-one-shoulder top. If you don't like boxy, you could probably find a peasant blouse that fits this description.

It can be hard to pull off, for me anyway.

I hear the total boho approach, but I could also see it with a belted structured (meaning not limp) white button front blouse; pointy toes might also help or a very cool flat sandal; I'd do more trendy delicate jewelry than big bangles and such. MAYBE a cropped boxy top for volume over volume? Linen or something. In my mind's eye, I like a beachy, fresh look with the long tiers of chambray better than a booted look, but it would all depend on frame and proportions, .
Probably I'm not much help because I don't know boho style very well and how to stay modern vs. whether you need to embrace the bo.

It think it could work with one of those white cropped mesh sweaters over a tank top and sandals for a very casual look. But I wonder if it might look too Little House on the Prairie if you go super boho. I think it would be really fun to try to edge it up with leather ankle booties and an army jacket or leather moto jacket or slouchy sweater!

Wow thanks this is a fun conversation for sure. Now I am feeling ill prepared to follow through since I don't necessarily have some of these items, but I will definitely try and let you guys know!
