Casual winter coat styles? - YouLookFab Forum

I'm thinking about getting a casual winter coat. I have a lovely 2 year old classic single breasted knee length wool coat in purple which I wear all winter. It looks great with my work clothes and cities. But I'm not happy about the look with more casual outfits - it feels too formal, especially if I'm strolling in the woods.

I don't know what styles might suit me best. I'm 5'0, apple shape and UK size 18-20. I think I want something that's mid-thigh length, I definitely want something that's not black, and I really don't want to look like a meatball on sticks.

I'm contemplating a duffle coat, or perhaps a puffa jacket. But not sure if they're the right styles for me. It doesn't get too cold here maybe down to freezing point, but I do feel the cold easily. Is a duffle coat a really bad idea? I've attached a photo of the one I have in mind.

I've never thought about white for winter being plus size.

plonkee--don't really know your style, but i've been thinking about those classic camel hair type coats...the one's that can just make an everyday outfit just a little more something, and yet don't look "dressy"...
i do like the duffle coat that you posted, does it work both opened and closed?

For casual I would want a washable garment rather than dry cleanable. Is that cute duffle washable?

I have a hooded wool duffle similar to that one that I use as a casual winter coat for things like you describe. It has a quilted lining which makes it very warm. I don't wear puffers by the way and I live somewhere colder than you.

So I say go for it!

Have you considered shopping the men's department? For casual outerwear, the quality is far superior for the price and you'll have no problem finding a larger size. One of my go-to winter coats is a man's raincoat. Could be worth a try?

I think a duffle coat would look perfect for casual walks in the woods, and it seems like the right weight for around freezing temps.

But since you already have a wool coat, why not go for a puffer? They're cozier than wool and you can get them in lots of happy colours.
I think a thigh length one would be a nice silhouette.
It doesn't have to be down either. I find the new technologies around synthetic fills give you a nice warm coat.

I think a duffle coat would be great for a casual coat. My own casual winter coat is from LLBean and it's super-warm. I love it because I'm such an icicle. A duffle coat would be a warm and cosy option. I also like a warm-lined parka for a casual option - something to keep the wind and rain at bay.

I like a duffle coat but I run cold so I always think puffer for walks in the woods. I am not in the UK though. I have been in the UK in December and the dampness went right into my bones. A puffer would be my choice.

Have you considered a classic peacoat? I stumbled on one last October in Banana Republic, and it became my go-to coat for that mild Winter. Great with jeans, roomy enough to wear over sweaters, and made in many versions by most manufacturers.

I love the idea of a duffle coat, Plonkee, and a puffer would be great too (especially if you get cold easily, to Style Fan's point). As some ladies have suggested a (longer) peacoat could be fun too. Or how about a (wind-proof) field jacket or a parka in a colour you love?
