Can you be 'normcore' if you're not ironic?

DS #1 and I were talking fashion personas at the dinner table, when DH asked 'what about me?' We figure him for 'academichic M--F, but a 'normcore' original on the weekend. As we were explaining it to him, he pulled up his *not* low-waisted stonewashed jeans, to reveal the ubiquitous white athletic socks complete with logo. The rest of the outfit was a grey mock turtleneck shirt.

So, if you are a 'normcore' original at 56 years of age, and without the irony, are you fashionable? Or just (LOL) hopeless?

I think "normcore" implies intention and irony. So no, he's not normcore, but rather their inspiration!

Love this! Personally, I think irony is overrated, but then I love music theatre and get all tingly at the end of "Oklahoma."

Your DH isn't hopeless, just a creature of habit, like most of his brethren! I do sometimes suggest little tweaks to my DH's style -- a change of wash and rise in his jeans, newer footwear. He still loves oversized button downs and sweatshirts.

As an original, your DH is perhaps iconic rather than fashionable.

Now you have me wondering.

I'd thought of my guy as geekchique, though he prefers the term nerd. Maybe he's some version of normcore? Black athletic socks with black shell Aldens. Grey pleated dress pants, white short-sleeve dress shirts. Once his trousers split at the office, so he closed his door and put his red Swingline to work. It's all deliberate, but never ironic.

LOL @ Amy's question. I have the exact question for your DH and MINE! My DH would wear these white socks with black dress shoes. Grrrrrrrr. I've seriously thought of one day just confiscate all of them and feed them to the black hole inside the washer/dryer....

Ironic or not, to us layman, no difference from the look, all in the attitude/intention I suppose.

Answer: The socks come a dozen to the bag.

In DH's defence, he does have black, grey, navy, and Khaki (!) socks for weekdays. He matches them to his trousers. I think the white socks are a weekend thing, and a jeans thing.
