Can I wear "Long"

Hi Fabbers,

I feel a little bit of a hypocrite after commenting on Skipkitty's recent post on the long coatigan. Well I suggested that it was too long and that I find knee length is a good length for those type of garments.. well.. I tried on a long draped jersey jacket that looked a lot like #1 here.

It is cocoon shape, batwing sleeve and it is calf length. I left it behind but keep thinking about it. I was wearing all black when I tried it on and was wearing skinny leg pants. I felt the all black look actually worked, creating a flow. I would also be wearing heels with something that length. It is the kind of garment that would certainly add some drama, suitable for day or evening and working over dresses or pants.

I have nothing like this or this length in my closet and I am wondering, without you seeing it on me, what your initial thoughts are. I am only 5ft 1 ish.

There is something about the drama of a item with length like that isn't there. Interesting drape and movement. I have to say the piece you've found is gorgeous though. If you wear it with heels and as a column of colour it will certainly be a statement piece.

Need to see it on. Everything is in the shape and styling, I suspect. And the visual weight.

Deborah - I'm 5'3" and I bought the EF icons maxi cardigan. It hits lower calf just about the ankle. It has beautiful movement and flow, sleek very elegant. I style it casual like below, or dressed up with a colulmn of color and a long pendant or with black cigarette pants/ sleeveless ruffled tux tank and statement belt. I do wear booties for a bit of height. I absolutely think it's all in the proportions and that you can pull this off. I think the beauty of this pieces is that it could skew across the casual - smart casual - to dressy depending on fabric. You love dramatic pieces with movement, I see this as very you. Plus the style of the piece you've picked is very unique - very stunning!! Big go for it from me!

I'm 5'2" and bought a long London Fog trenchcoat this year. I think sometimes we have to break rules and buy what speaks to us. All that really matters is that what we buy gets worn often enough to justify the purchase.

I'm 5'0 and I just bought a dress very similar to this one below. I really like the midi length for a change of pace. I think it is elegant and elongating. It will look great with heeled booties but I am also going to give it a whirl with flatter, more chunky booties or monk strap flats.

I also think this length looks quite modern right now. A few years ago, I'd have said it was a dated length. But what goes around comes around...

Love a longer dramatic cardigan, feels very Trinity/Matrix style and edgy! I want to see it on you! And would die to see griffyn in her's EF with the ruffled tux shirt under...oh, well (sighs:-()...

Thanks very much ladies. I don't know why I didn't think to take a photo in the store duh. I will think on it today (it's a public holiday here) and possibly go back tomorrow for another try on and photos.

Definitely show us some pics. I agree that proportions are key. Some can pull off the length, and others cannot despite their height or lack of height as the case may be.

I like it very much, as a piece. I wear long cardigans and coats as a matter of course and feel they work well. I'm a little taller than you but never wear heels.

If I remember Dashelle also posted a long cardi recently. The piece looks so you. Hopefully it works of you decide to pursue further.

I think shorter ladies can do long lengths. I see a lot of shorter women that look good in maxi dresses. The shape of it is tapered and I think that helps to make it easier to wear.

It's such a cool cardigan, Deborah, and I can picture it on you the way you suggest wearing it. Also, if your initial reaction to it on you was positive, I think that says a lot, too.

p.s. I also think long pieces can elongate, like the ultimate column of color, no?

So far, the longest I've done is knee length on my 5'2" frame. What was a normal length on the model was super long for me. That said, I'd try longer and would love to see you in one this length, especially if it's as nice as the one you posted.

I really like it, Deborah, and I think it could work on you with the styling you have in mind. I think the length is offset by the openness at the front, if you know what I mean. It looks as if would skim the sides of the body , leaving a nice, long vertical line.
