Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Bras

Another question from MVM! I need some new bras. Typically I buy the best fitting I can find at Walmart or Kmart because that is all we have locally. I would like to buy online and am looking at figleaves.com because they offer free returns and exchanges.

I haven't been professionally fitted in a very long time and even then it was VS and I don't think the girl must have known what she was doing because she came up with a 36B when that CLEARLY did not fit. Right now I am wearing 34 D. But am pretty sure that I need a DD. But I can never find that locally. Anywho, where are the best places to be professionally fitted?

Any brands or styles that those of you D/DD cup ladies out there can recommend?

I'm a D cup, and I swear by Nordstrom. I personally love Chantelle. I suggest that you get fitted first and purchase a few bras. Then as you need more, check figleaves, Nordstrom, etc. for sales.

I got fitted at Macy's. Do you have one nearby? I highly recommend getting professionally fitted before buying bras.

I was really surprised when I was fitted at Nordstrom that I had been so far off in my bra size. Getting a good fitting and also finding the brand that suits your body is very important.
After reading that so many women love Chantelle I went and tried them but they don't fit me, or I don't fit them.

Let me urge you to get professionally fitted at Nordstrom before buying any more bras. Then you can order the styles that worked for you through the Nordstrom website, or by calling the lingerie counter where you had your fitting.

Bra fitting is a science and as the ladies have suggested, it’s important to be professionally fitted first and every year. Nordstrom or a speciality lingerie shop will do the trick. Do not go to Victoria Secret. They will waste your time and money.

I have Felina. Yes to fittings also! I only have two, one nude and one black, both the t shirt bra's...totally smooth to go under knits. If you wash them by hand your investment lasts longer,or use a bra bag when they are in the wash, it will keep them from getting twisted (it's a little mesh bag that zips)...and air dry too.

Another voice in favor of bra fittings! Although I'm not a DD cup myself, I like Wacoal bras, and their iBra is almost invisible under knits on me. For a fitting, I went to a lingerie store (the kind of lingerie store that often has bras for women who have undergone mastectomy, not the kind of store like Victoria's Secret or Fredericks). Learning my real size and wearing appropriately sized bras made such a difference for me, possibly because I was wearing sizes so very far off the correct size before I was professionally fitted. Once I settled on a style I liked, I looked for duplicates at discount stores like Marshalls and on eBay.

I wish we had a Nordstrom or Macy's here in Canada! Any Canadian ladies have any suggestions of where to go for fittings??

A professional fitting at Nordie's is a must. I did that and got Chantelle's.

I agree. Professional fitting is a must. And go to Nordstrom over Macy's. I'm a dd or d depending. When I was young, my mother had the wisdom to take me to a place that did prosthetics for women who had had mastectomies for my bra needs. At the time I felt like such a weirdo. In any case, it taught me a lot about bra fitting. So the other day, I went to Macy's for some new bras. The woman who was supposed to be the expert was HOPELESS. She kept trying to get me into bras that were too small. We're talking the bras that give you a double boob because the cup is too small. Thankfully, I had enough knowledge to know that wasn't right. But it's a word to the wise.

Also, I have had some success with Bali bras. But again, it's so personal that you should just try everything.

Oh, and one more word of advice from my mom. She always said to make sure, once you've found something that fits, to also assess how it looks with your shirt on. I've found that to be quite useful advice.
