Here's the Ellen Tracy coat I ordered from NAS:

I *love* the color and the styling. It's a bit longer than I had hoped for, but I think the length is not a problem. I always worry about the extra bulk that coats add, but I realize I'm not very objective, so that's why I come here for honest feedback! So what do you all think? Is it a keeper, or should I keep looking?

i think its really pretty - i was contemplating getting the jacket myself, although in the eggplant color. as for the length, i think a few inches shorter would make you look a bit taller. it's not bad as is, but it would look sharper just a bit shorter.

also, the sleeves look a bit too long. find a good tailor tho, and i think it's a fab fit for you!

I agree with Shell....the color is fabulous on you! The sleeves are a bit too long. I'd spend the $ to have the sleeves shortened, and then while you're at it, have them shorten it too. I think it's worth the alterations--it's a beautiful coat.

Becky, the color is gorgeous on you! It also fits you well in the shoulders and waist. I'd keep it and have the sleeves and the bottom shortened a bit.

What size is the coat, Becky? And how many layers are you wearing underneath?

Becky, I LOVE that color on you and as much as it pains me to say this, I would keep looking. My reasoning is based on the fact that you have mentioned how hard it is to find a good tailor in your area and I don't think you want to take a chance on this coat since it wasn't exactly bargain priced. I also think you can find something that fits you a little better all over and doesn't bulk as much. Sorry I think your instincts were right and you need a petite coat.

Well, Dani, this *is* a petite coat! (Guess that tells how short I am all over, doesn't it??) This is a size 2P, Angie, and I am wearing one lightweight sweater underneath. The shoulders feel like they are nice and roomy, which I like, but perhaps they are too big?

Oh, Becky, I'm sorry...I didn't realize it was a petite (taking foot out of mouth now). I don't think you're that short. Do you think you could take a 0P?

Thanks Becky. I'm tempted to let you try a 0P. Will you wear thicker items underneath? LOVE the colour and collar detail. I like the overall length. It’s classy and versatile. Sleeves need adjustment but its’ just too roomy in the shoulder. Does that make sense? Do you feel you could go down a size?

Becky, I'm petite too, and I find that full length coats kind of dwarf me...you just see the coat and not the woman in the coat! I'm no expert, but maybe others can weigh in on getting a coat where the eye goes upward and it makes the leg line look longer...here's an example :

the eye goes to the bust area...and then all that room underneath can look like it's your legs! I actually tried this coat on, and I loved it but it wasn't comfortable for me

No problem, Dani! There's no need to chew your toes! *chuckle* I am quite comfortable with my "vertically challenged" status, although finding clothing is often frustrating!

Angie, I do think I could possibly go down to a 0P. I would not generally wear more than two thin layers underneath, so I wouldn't have a lot of bulk to deal with. Would the sleeves be shorter on the 0P, or would they still need adjusted?

San, I like the idea of the coat style you suggested. My problem is the smaller selection available in petite sizes. I will try the 0P and see what happens...but I think I will call the new tailor I found and ask about the cost of adjusting the sleeves. I had her shorten a skirt and found the quality of her work very nice, so maybe I'm onto something...

Judy, the style you suggest is nice, but I think it's too boxy for me. I feel like I need something as streamlined as possible since I am so short.

The coat is still above your knee, right? This length looks good with skirts and dresses. A shorter coat doesn’t look nearly as good over frocks. You can always get yourself an inexpensive shorter coat for pants only. This length goes both ways. Have a squizz at this:

Julia, I hear you on the “dwarfing” aspect. I think a smaller size might solve the problem. The sleeve length should also be a little shorter because the shoulder width is narrower on a smaller size.

Your call Becky. You can either have one more bash with this coat or wait till Winter stock hits stores full swing.

Just checked the Nordstrom site...this coat is not available in 0P. So, I guess the search continues...

If anyone finds a beautiful red coat in petite sizes, let me know!

Just curious though, have you tried calling customer service and seeing if they could track down one in the stores?

Actually, Dani, it appeared that it wasn't even available; that size wasn't a choice on the pull-down menu. I could call, though, to double-check. Good idea.

Yeah, it's possible it's just sold out online. If you call, they can search stores, too.

I checked with Customer Service this morning; that coat was not available at all in 0P. But at least I have plenty of time to search before cold weather gets here!

Oh that's too bad! Well, there will be other jackets, you're right. I'd definitely keep red in mind, that's a fab color on you and looks great with your new Trotters.

The best assortment of coats is usually in early September, Becky. Although I managed to replace my false plain coat in July! I’d say keep your eyes peeled from now on. Something better awaits you
