When I woke up I realized my daughter had found a bag of special clothes I was saving for a special occasion. She is on Team Wear so she insisted this was the perfect time to wear it.

Question for the South Asians in our group: this dress was a gift. I don't know anything about it. Is there a cultural significance to it? What would be the appropriate occasion to wear it, outside of every single possible moment?

it can be worn to any cultural function- the outfit is called a lehenga choli or ghaghra choli- choli being the top, the ghaghra/lehenga being the skirt.

also great for dress up. she could also wear it for Halloween and be an Indian/South asian princess.add some gold bead bling or a crown and she is ready to go!

She ias adorable in it!!

Sona, Thank you so much! That helps a lot! I was so nervous about this outfit when she pulled it out. All of that gold is individual hand beading, I cannot imagine how much work it took to make it. But she is sooo adorable in it, I think I am going to let her wear it for halloween. If not now, when? She might outgrow it before we have another family black tie affair.

Rita, your daughter looks so cute in her ghagra choli! Any "nice" event would do. Does your family ever eat Indian food in restaurants? That might be another occasion to wear the dress, if there are no fancy dress occasions coming up. Halloween is another option.

Oh my gosh, am I ever glad I checked this thread! Your daughter is beautiful, Rita, and so are your girls, Sona! Wow, such lovely, lovely outfits.

My daughter is from China and more than a bit of a tomboy. She refuses all dresses. But luckily, she does like the traditional Chinese trouser outfit with Mandarin jacket, and has had several of those over the years for dressy family occasions.

Suz- how old is your little one and what size does she wear? I would love to buy her an indian outfit ( we go in March 2012 fora family wedding).

GP: I've lost 75+ pounds. mostly through taking a hard look at my life after my Dad passed and realizing that my type A personality was only making me gain abdominal fat and a whoe slew of medical problems. I now work part time, run and spend more time with my daughter. My husband is academic track and I am part- time so we will never be 'rich' but life and health in and of it self is the true richness not money or christian louboutins!

Anyway don't want to hijack Rita's thread but have to say agin that your daughter looks just amazing and like a tiny Princess/bride! We need to get you a matching tunic!!

Sona, you are WAY too generous!

My "little one" is not so little now. She is almost 12 and 5 feet tall and growing by the day!
She was six and seven in those photos, and truly little then.

Sorry, Rita, for hijacking again, but Sona, congratulations on your weight loss and most importantly on the change of your style of life. I had a similar realization last year when my dad was very ill (he subsequently died, as well) and I, too, went on to lose a lot of weight. So we may not be body doubles but we are emotional twins on YLF!

IK, my son is 7 and I LOVE this age. It seems like a time when they can be helpful AND want to help, and are so interested in everything. Funny, un-self-conscious, curious, enthusiastic, silly, cuddly, boisterous, confident, sweet - *sigh*.
