Ask Angie: What to wear with Orange Cardi??

Hi Angie!

I bought off ebay a fab little vintage fine knit orange cardi, round neck, buttons all way down and with a bit of sparkle in the knit. I love it but now am not sure how to wear it or what with! I'm in my mid 30s, very slim, dark brown long hair and prefer neuted/ natural colours, nothing too bright. I usually just wear jeans or soft black velour pants, boots and casual tops/ What would you advise i put with this cardi, would be a shame never to wear it! Thanks a million

What shade of orange is it? Like, more burnt orange, yellow-orange, bright neon orange? I love orange, it's my favorite color and wear it fairly often. I like to pair orange with medium-dark denim, or possibly neutral bottoms--light khaki (off white, really) or cream, and a neutral layering piece. Cream is my favorite pairing if it's a richer, warmer orange.

The cardigan you're describing sounds to me like a statement piece, so personally, I would just keep everything else understated and clean (no embellished camis, giant frilly earrings, etc.)

Hi. Thanks so much for your reply. It's quite a deep burnt orange colour, not that bright, certainly not neon. I'm into vintage one off pieces which means i've picked up lots of lovely one offs, but also means i never know what to wear with them or how to put them together to make the most of the lovely item! i'll attache photo (nb, not me in photo

me again.. just adding some further info. Would you recommend accessories- chunky beads for example,bangles or nothing? Skinny or boot leg jeans, or black trousers? Skirts? Or a black polo neck underneath? Just provoking some ideas? Cheers mucho!

I think the sweater is super cute! I think whether you wear skinny jeans with it is dependent on your body type/weight, etc. I think the look the model has is nice. A look that might work for anyone is darker denim bottom, either a skirt or bootleg or trouser style denim. Layer the sweater over a cream cami or polo neck (although I've heard Angie say polos are a very "young" look, so I guess it depends on your age). If you went with the cami, you could do lots of things. I like the light blue beads the model is wearing, or bangles (I'm not sure if I'd do both, probably just one or the other). Any accessories you wear I'd keep in a single, more subdued color (that's why the model's necklace works, because there's not pattern on the beads and it's light). If you went with anything more outrageous, I think it would be competing with the sweater and you'd have too much going on. If you want a more "classic" look I think simple gold jewelry would be really nice.

I personally stay away from black and orange because all I can think is "Halloween!" but more adventurous people might be able to pull it off (like the model in the picture).

Cute sweater! The outfit in the photo is nice combination of vintage glam (the cardi) and retro modern (striped top and skinnies).

If you're not afraid of color--how about a pink tank under the orange sweater, a set of white or cream chunky beads close around the neck, and a pair of white or cream pants. I'd also love to see the orange paired with ink blue.

Are you thinking about a deeper berry pink? That WOULD look nice. I'll have to keep that in mind for all my orange stuff. What about aqua blue? I've always liked those two colors together (made quilt those colors once) but never tried wearing them.

I have seen aqua and orange together. I don't personally care for it--it reminds me of Florida and Pelicans for some strange reason. Not that I have anything against either Florida or penguins--it just seems like a theme to me. I know that sounds crazy. There's actually a shampoo comercial on TV that shows a girl in an orange dress with turquiose blue beads. So, if you like the combination, then I think you should wear it!

The shade of pink will depend on the shade of orange. I never trust the hue of a color from a computer.

Great cardigan, and I think it could look great with a very dark wash denim skirt (knee length). Just another idea...
