Ask Angie: Is this the Midi Coat for Me?

I took inspiration from your recent blog post on midi length coats and a recent modern classic "must-haves" list and hunted down one of the midi coats you featured.

Despite the online suggestion to size down, the size 6 seemed fine on me (I think). I am usually a 4 or a 6, but my local Nordstrom's only had a 6 as the smallest size.

Oh...I am having happy/sad flashbacks to an amazing midi coat of my mother's that I inherited and wore for several years, until it wore out, actually. I loved that coat, so I love this one, too. It means I cannot view it with any objectivity.

It's a great colour, but my concern is that with the very wide lapels it's a lot of coat for someone with such a small frame.

Aw, Suz, that is such a sweet memory to share...thank you! It is amazing how retro/vintage the coat feels with just that extra bit of elegant length to it. Looking at the pix I think I have the belt cinched a tad too tight, but otherwise, I thought it was a lovely coat.

I agree with missvee about the lapels. They're a bit overwhelming. It is a very nice coat.

Interesting - I don't consider myself to have a small frame...I agree they are dramatic lapels...

Have you layered properly underneath the coat, MPJ? Be sure to do that so that all bases are covered.

The style is heavenly on you! I am not 100% on board with the colour yet. It seems too yellow for your complexion. But that could be bad store lighting. I leave that part up to you

Angie, I no longer layer heavily in the wintertime...in this picture I'm wearing a turtleneck with a cami underneath. If I were wearing a dress, the most I would layer would be a cami under and a lightweight cardi over. I think I could do that easily. Would have been nice to try the 4, but I do think the 6 fit well through the shoulders. I don't think the coat is as yellow in real life...would need to get it home and take pix out in the open air.

You should try a size 4 too then. Just to be on the safe side.

I like the coat but think that it needs to be smaller. It is hard to carry off a coat that big, a smaller size might be the trick. It could also be done with very sleek clothing underneath.
