Kristen - I certainly don't have anything against color! I love seeing color on other people, and I envy people who can wear it and have fun with it. I just feel - too obvious? Too noticeable? Also, there are just so many colors I don't feel work on me, that I suppose I've given up a bit trying to find the exact shades that work.
Joy - you are I are going to have an interesting summer as we try to refine our own styles, in the heat! I'm glad someone else is going through this at the same time!
Jean - I love the way you dress. Even though I don't know you, I feel I "know" you through your style. To me, you're artistic to the core, funky, spirited, adventurous, inquisitive, sensitive and playful. Your clothing says "artist" - someone who sees the world through shape and color and expresses what's inside. And it's authentic - you seem comfortable in your skin, and your clothes. Maybe because you know who you are? Like Shiny, you have personal style that leaps off the computer screen. It's like you use yourself as your canvas, and your clothes are a form of art - color and form and expression. Also, like Shiny, you know what looks good on your body.
I envy both of you. I feel I'm still searching. I love my NY black & white, but I'm not a SOHO sophisticate. I read a blog recently and she used the word "city," and that resonated with me, but what does that really mean? I think, sometimes, being a writer, I'm an observer. I love to sit back in a room and watch people. But there's a side of me that wants people to notice me too, and whisper "Who's that?" I don't want them to approach me, or to talk to me - but I do want them to notice! So, I think that's why I dress in black (to blend into the background) with a little bit of flare (to be noticed.) I guess in the end, you just have to go with what's comfortable to you.
I do feel this all has something to do with age, a little bit, but there are also so many other considerations. Thanks for all the interesting discussion!
