Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Ask Angie: boots question

Hi Angie,

I have asked this question before and I really would love to know if you had an opinion on this:
What do you think of engineer, harness, cowboy boots (the original ones, not designer or stylized ones.) I see these popping up in fashion magazines and also in catalogs such as Sundance?

Thanks so much, I am learning so much from YLF, looking forward to updating my wardrobe.

I am replying to my own thread because i think this question may have gotten buried and I am really curious as to what others think.

Thanks for any opinion.

Hi Greenlove, I think that posting a picture of one of these boots could help a lot. I personally do not know how they look like.

I'm not sure what engineer or harness boots are. A picture would definitely help me. :)

sorry, hopefully this will help, do you ever get the sundance catalog, they show boot like this with skirts and jeans. This is a Frye harness boot.

Personally, I do not like this look, but then it's really not my style. I can see them working well with jeans on the right person with the right style. I would not wear them with skirts. I am not familiar with Sundance catalog :(

Thanks Tanya,

You will probably really not like these but these are the engineer boots:

I knew what you meant a la Billy Joel..."Engineer Boots, Leather Jackets, and Tight Blue Jeans...."

I think Engineer Boots are wearable if you don't pair them with leather jackets and tight blue jeans though. If you have a funky side to yourself, you could pair them with a very feminine outfit. Kind of like Cindi Lauper used to do in the 80's.

I like some Frye boots, but don't personally care for those styles. They're too masculine and bulky for my taste, and not very versatile.

However, one of my friends has boots a bit like these, but without all the straps and buckles and doo-dads

and I like them on her. I can't really place why. I think it might be because they're not as fussy and the color and fabrication is really nice, but overall, I prefer boots to be more fitted and feminine. But that doesn't mean they're off the table--that's just my preference.

I am considering these too because I live in a small western town and it seems like they would be fun when we go to the rodeo, fair, fall sheep festival etc?

Aren't they a classic?

My really stylish friend had her black Frye harness boots on at the fair with some cute jeans (bootcut) and a feminine top and it was good looking and practical too I thought for walking around in the hay looking at farm animals.

Angie

What do you think of Frye Harness or Frye Engineer boots?

Posted 1 year ago

I found a picture from the catalog that shows the boots with a skirt, I doubt I would wear them that way but there is something about the ruggedness of the boot with a skirt that I like. If this does not post I think it is because the catalog does not allow it. I have had that problem before.
Here goes:

Hmm, the photo doesn't work, it's because of those vertical lines I think.

Sorry, it is what I suspected. I don't know why images from that source do not post.
I would also be curious if Angie thinks they are a classic look.

Is that it, Greenglove?

I think it's a very country look. But if you live in teh country and you like the country look, then by all means, try it out. When you live in the city, and dress like a cowgirl, it feels a little too much like a Halloween costume. But if you live in the country, then you can get away with it. At least that's my opinion.

wow I would have a hard time wearing them the way the cataog shows. I would probably only wear them with bootcut jeans.

Wow,
I would love to know how you got that to post. I don't know if it looks that much like a cowgirl but I do see what you mean. It would be a better look for casual trips to the country. I would also probably only wear with bootcuts, thanks for the image!

GG, I just opened to the store web page, searched on skirts, saw the name of the skirt that appeared in your URL...I clicked on it, and saw the model had on boots. I cut and pasted right out of the address bar into my reply.

I know a couple girls that pull off the cowboy boot, girly dress combo well. Both are model skinny and one plays Americana music. It looks great on them but I think it can be a hard look to pull off and takes the attitude to go along with it. If you've got that, I think you'd be good to go.

Thanks Nicole,
I didn't try not using photobucket, that was where the photo was that I tried to paste.
I am still really not great at posting pics.

yooohoo! I’m here.

I totally understand the Sundance boot look. I just convinced a client to buy a pair. They absolutely work for her and look incredible. I do not consider them “a classic” though. They are hard core, really hard core. But on the right women, they work well.

I much prefer this look to anything Western and cowboy looking.

Hi greenglove

I like that type of boots, and think they can look great with both jeans and a feminine skirt or dress. But I agree that it has to fit in with your fashion persona, not everybody can pull it off.

Something similar, but a bit sleeker and without buckles is the Bern boot on the Duoboots website. (just scroll down):
