Interesting article. When I was in the work force (before being stay-at-home mom), I wore a uniform, but there were a few people (who didn't wear uniforms) who could have learned the difference between dressing up for the bar and dressing up for the office. I also didn't put smiley faces in my work emails, despite my love of them here.

I came from a line of pretty strict English teachers, so showing up in the work force to smileys and slang threw ME off. However, it is more used at some companies and less used at others... it's hard to determine the office culture sometimes - in some places, you sound rude or unenthused if you don't exclaim your thanks.

Hoodies at work are hands-down a bad idea, though.
