are dark wash only options for jeans?

I have several pairs of bootcut jeans that are in both mid and light wash denim. Are they totally out of fashion? I am on a budget and cannot afford really expensive jeans. I buy Gap on ebay, they fit great. What do others think? I am of the artistic, urban style type.

Light weight washes are extremely casual. It also depends on your age. Unfashionable – debatable, not versatile – definitely.

I agree with Angie and San. I think that they may be in style for you, especially if you are in your early 20s. But I don't think even if you are young or arty that they would work in smart-casual settings. Dark jeans just look smarter.

I have a pair of medium/lighter wash boot cut jeans that I wear on casual occasions. I think they are perfectly appropriate with a nice knit top and my fashion tennies.

Thanks for the replies, I am actually much older than 20. I work as a university art professor and it is ultra casual at school. Smart casual is not usually how I dress, it is a bit too polished a look for my lifestyle. I suppose lighter washes would be fine in painting class. I am excited about this post, love fashion and Angie's blog reports!!

Greenglove, I think it is awesome that you work as an art professor. I imagine that you would want to wear pants to class that could withstand paint accumulation. But, for those times when you are not painting, might i suggest a gradual shift to smart casual? When I first starting reading Angie's posts about this and starting dressing in the "flop-proof" way, it did seem a big more dressy than I was used to. I live in a college town, and ultra casual wins the day. But now that I'm about 2 years into smart casual dressing, I do not at all feel uncomfortable. You do not have to be less urban/arty/funky to be smart casual. It is a style that lends well to each style persona. Check out these posts if you haven't already:

Thanks Christie,
I will keep it in mind. I guess I had a more limited idea of what smart casual meant. I am going to England this summer and am hoping to purchase an authentic bikers jacket. I hope to have it work with a multitude of looks. I do have a particular style that has worked for me but love trying out new looks.

I think a biker jacket sounds sweet. Angie has written quite a bit about her love of the look. She likes to combine hers with pearls. I think you could work yours in with an arty/urban funk look, too. What about with dark, straight-leg jeans, some funky boots or heels (low heel of course or flats because you are urban), a funky nicer knit t-shirt, and a chunky bright colored necklace. That would rock!

Black and dark grey jeans! Especially if they're straight leg or skinny (but only if skinnies suit you). Black Jeans are very bohemian art-teacherish, but also extremely versatile. Grey is almost as versatile, but if their too light, they can come off as super casual as light wash blue denim. I personally avoid light wash denim like the plague, but it depends on your style. Dark wash denim is a sure bet with absolutely everything and in almost every situation.

Just thought of something else to add. Grey flat corduroy, meaning a sort of matte velvet, is a great fabric for grey jeans. You can even wear the light greys in this fabric without looking way too casual. You might be thinking velvet pants!? I hate velvet pants as a rule, but these are not what you might expect.
