Anyone wonder why they bought something?

Ive wanted a light, pale yellow cardi for a long time...too long, I guess. I found one at Nordie's online, immediately bought it and once I got it I began wondering why I wanted it so bad...anyone else do something like that?

Errrrrmmm ... yes ... and more often than I care to confess to ... :-/

One that comes to mind is a BCBG mini skirt made of pale gold sequins I'd been coveting for weeks. I pictured it with a black angora sweater (long sleeves and high-necked, but low in the back), and a pair of black suede platform stillettos. I finally succumbed - I needed that skirt, and didn't want anyone else to have it!

Who was I kidding? I'm just not a sequin kind of gal, and that's the bottom line. So it hangs there, pristine in its plastic bag, reproaching me every time I open the door...

Yep! One question to myself is starting to help me avoid this, though. Where will I be wearing it? It never really dawned on me before to think situation specific when shopping. I could picture what other colors or fabrics in my closet I could team something with, but I never got the heart of where the heck will I find myself wearing it and why? What will I be doing, etc? Ends up 90% of my situations right now are running errands, shopping and other casual outings. The other 10% is going out to lunch or dinner at non formal establishments, so perhaps smart casual or for the rare occasion, dressy. Then I have my workout and running gear portion of my day and loungewear in the house. That's the reality of my life right now. Cocktail attire NOT needed lol.

I keep my tags on items until the first time i actually wear them out of the house...that way, i can return if/when the "what was I thinking!?" moment occurs. That hasn't happened in the recent months though, I think I've gotten better at honing in on what I like..

All the time. This is why I am SYC, to learn why I am so trigger-happy!

Mo, "situation-specific" is a perfect term. The capsule thing has really helped me too. But I still feel like if I am too situation-specific, I'm either dressed for court/clients or in camping gear, as those are my two main situations in life.

Yup, sounds like me, too. I try to remember that feeling when something makes me go SQUEEE inside. If I don't feel that, then I probably shouldn't buy it. If I do, it's worth a shot taking it home.

Thank you, Srujana - being immersed in the great style sensibility of YLF, I may summon the nerve to wear it one evening ... if I do, will post pictures!

I also do *alot* of bringing clothes home and leaving the tags on until I've tried them with other things in my closet, and have had time to contemplate at leisure (Motto: "When in doubt, bring it home!").

My husband and I have a routine: I do the shopping and spend money, he does the returns and saves money, and we're both happy as clams with our roles.
