A day both nervous and happy

Today's the day my girl has to go in for her endoscopy. I know it's only a minor procedure, but it's in an operating room and they have to put her out. I am a little (irrationally) nervous. I'm sure she'll be fine but still...it's my baby we're talking about here!

On a plus note, I just checked the university website for my grades. I got a semester GPA of 4.33. HOLY MOLY. That means literally an A+ in everything, including the academic classes. I can't tell any other students (you never talk grades at school) but I have to tell someone besides my hubs and parents! This may not seem like a big deal for those of you who are used to getting A's, but it's a big deal for me. I certainly didn't do this well in my 20s. I guess mature students really do have the advantage of life experience.

Congrats on the grades! That is certainly something to be proud of and celebrate. True story: I quit undergrad school after a year and a half with a GPA that was rapidly in decline. I was just too distracted by, um, extracurricular activities. I started working full-time instead. But after a year of that, I went back to school, part-time, on my own dime. From the time I did that, all the way through graduate school and then later on when I started another degree at a community college, I never had a grade lower than an A. I truly believe that, in general, older students who are putting themselves through school are way more motivated!

Sending good thoughts to your daughter. I would be nervous too. I'm sure all will go fine!

Congrats on your GPA, it feels so good to do so well, doesn't it! I think older students have more at stake, certainly if they are footing the bill, so probably get better grades overall.

My DH had 17 endoscopies before finally seeing a surgeon and having a serious operation to solve the problem. (Caused by an earlier surgery that didn't go so well.) My only advice is that sometimes the anesthesia can make the patient nauseous after, so be prepared.

DH is fine now. He never had a problem during the procedure itself.

Congratulations on the grade awesomeness. I've sat through a couple endoscopes with my husband and he's been dopey after but not a big deal otherwise. Hope your daughter will be the same.

Congratulations on your grades, I too, was a student older than average when I went back for my BS and then MBA, all A's. Older students are more into it, not distracted by the other things going on on campus when you're 18 or so! And I wish your daughter good luck.

I vividly remember sitting in the waiting room during my daughter's endoscopy. Very nerve wracking -- any time they put your child under with sedation. Hope all went well and that you got some actionable information.

Thanks so much, everyone. The endoscopy went really well -- it only took about 15 minutes -- and she woke up very quickly afterward. It was very disconcerting watching her go unconscious, though (they invited me stay in the room until she was asleep). She was groggy afterward but very talkative!

We don't get the official results back for two weeks, but it does look like celiac disease will be confirmed. The doctors said it wasn't the worst case they'd ever seen, but there is some minor intestinal damage. Everything else looks healthy. This is what I was expecting, so I'm feeling optimistic.

Sorry to hear about the celiac diagnosis, but your sweet DD is in very good hands with her amazing and very positive Mum to help her adjust and to take care of her!-)

To this late, pleased the procedure went smoothly. My 11 year old had a general last year and my 14 year old a hospital admission in January, so I know how daunting these experiences can be.

So glad everything went smoothly with your daughter. I would not call anyone with celiac disease "lucky" but at least she lives in a time where it can be diagnosed and gluten-free food is pretty widely available.

I had been meaning to get to this thread much earlier, and reassure you about the procedure (both my kids were fine with it, and enjoyed the fact that they got to eat things they didn't usually get afterwards and watch TV on a Saturday morning!) And now I'm glad that it has worked out ok!

How is your daughter feeling about the who gluten free thing now, when she has had a while to think about it?

And congratulations on those grades - that is incredible, especially when you have had so much else on your hands. I did pretty well too, (though not in your league!) when I returned to Uni part-time in my 20s to do a graduate diploma 2 years after finishing my undergrad. In my case I think it was partly that I had finally worked out what academics want, by the end of the first one, and partly that it was in an area where, by the end or it, I was already working, so that reinforced what I was studying.

Thanks, Anne, for the concern. I think she's adjusting. Every now and then she has a sad moment when she thinks of something else that she can't have (yesterday, for instance, she remembered about strudel) and she was acutely disappointed when she tried gluten-free sandwich bread (it was gross), but we've had some pleasant surprises too. Gluten-free pasta is pretty good, as are rice tortillas. And there are quite a few things she loves that are naturally gluten-free, or have a genuinely yummy gluten-free version (like cake). So we'll see.

Yes bread is a hard one. My DDs hardly ate it at all for a while after diagnosis, and I still only eat it occasionally and always toasted. (I prefer a buckwheat sourdough from a GF baker, but I'll have the supermarket stuff if I don't have any)

DD12 however, who is going through a growth spurt, eats at least 4 slices a day - 2 for breakfast 2 for lunch and often 2 more in the evening, DD10 didn't like break before and still never has sandwiches but occasionally has toast.

I'm glad she likes GF pasta - I don't that much (and I loved the normal sort) but my girls do.

Strudel - yeah - not a hope!

I haven't heard of rice tortillas here, but we do get tortilla chips made from corn quite often.

I found adapting at home wasn't too hard - much harder when going out or to a friends place. However, most of their friend's parents try very hard to accomodate them at parties and visits, and their school canteen has a few options too. How is she going with that side of things?
